    You're diagnostic tips are the best on youtube bar none. Especially for people who don't have access to the proper calibrated data and desired readings for certain sensors and things like that. And properly using scanner in general. Hell of a teacher man.

      @@ScannerDanner You're welcome. No thankyou bro. My father has had a transmission shop for going on 30 years and I've worked there for nearly 8. He taught me everything I know but he's getting on up there in the years and just from a different generation yano? And I've been the r&r guy for that time.. So alot of the diagnosing and building I'm starting to have to take on myself. And being able to watch these and actually learn what this code means and that code with this code means this, and the little fine detailed tricks and tips you give for running electrical checks has helped me so much. I'd like to go to tech school but until I'm able to I'm burning these videos up. Lol. So i appreciate it for real brother.

    Paul, I wanted to thank you, again, for introducing me to the no current voltages that go away when a connector is plugged in on Fords, its priceless info. And all other scope videos that taught me to watch for grounds that jump to small voltage when they should not. Let me commend you on starting out with an explanation on how the EGR susbsystem actually works. This knowledge is the key to quick diagnostics and repairs.
    Your whole test methodology (forcing the valve to open via the control solenoid and watching for RPM drop) is what has been used for many, many years without scan tools.
    Knowledge about this sensor would allow an experienced mechanic to jump to replacing it.
    Following up with repair confirmation is a great way to do a "quality" repair !

The only way I can get experience is to watch yours videos, and I learn a lot it would take years of learning if I should only learn from working on cars. I try to watch others video to but I must say you are the best I also learn English as I am from Sweden. The best thing is you save me a lot of money I rather invest in ScannerDanner material then throwing money at the part changer mechanic and shops. My next goal is to buy pico or Tiepie.

    That was a great explanation of how the EGR system works with the DPFE sensor using the diagram of all of the components. Thanks for doing that. Makes it clearer. I never knew the hose position mattered because in previous videos when you talked about checking for restricted exhaust, you said you could either hose. Thanks again for showing all of that.

    Very good information. Replaced a DPFE on a 2001 ford expedition last week. Had a p401 code on my snap on modus. went to code tips and checked the DPFE voltage and it was steady at 0.2 volts. Replaced sensor voltage at idle was 1.03 after repair. One tip on the f150 and expeditions with the 4.6 engine, the passages in the throttle body are bad about getting clogged from carbon buildup and have to be cleaned out alot of the time. So if you have a P401 on 4.6 engine suspect passages are clogged up

    I had a 2001 Taurus that, for years, had HORRIBLE spark knock and a really bad misfire at part throttle cruise. Never threw a code. I spent a lot of money getting the computer reprogrammed, ran a cooler thermostat in it one summer and NUMEROUS other things. Could never get it figured out. One day it threw a code for insufficient EGR - after I replaced it, it fixed everything else. Crazy how they relate.

    1998 Pathfinder 3.3L, automatic, 164,000 miles, stock. Runs real good.
    So I'm having a recurring P1400 EGRC Solenoid Valve error come back after erasing codes. It reappears almost immediately after being erased. I don't have any operability issues. No other codes but one that came up after I started running the motor with the solenoid plug disconnected (for testing)...P0443 Evap Emission Purge Control Valve Circuit. But it stopped appearing after I reconnected the solenoid plug.
    I looked where the ECM is to access the EGRC Solenoid ground wire and crap is that a pain to get out! So I did these troubleshooting steps to test the Ground wire resistance and the Voltage at the plug wire instead. This is after I tested the valve clicks/opens with 12v injected from a jumper wire. The solenoid appears good, as far as activating manually.
    Ground Wire tests: left socket when looking at plug with lock button on top.
    ENGINE COLD --
    Off cold: 500 ohms
    Key on cold: 1,200 ohms
    Cranked idle Cold: 3,600 ohms.
    ENGINE HOT --
    25 minute idle warm up and short drive, and RPM revs to 3,000.
    Off: 500 ohms.
    Key On: 1,200 ohms
    Cranked at 850-rpm idle: 1,600 ohms before revving, 3,400 ohms after revving 2,000 rpm.
    Cranked and held at 2,000 rpm (in Neutral) for 60 seconds: 1,850 ohms.
    ### VOLTAGE tests ###
    Power Wire: right socket.
    Using ground wire on solenoid plug (motor cold) --
    Off: 0.01v
    Key On: 11.9v
    Cranked: 14.3v
    Using chassis ground frame bolt (motor hot) --
    Off: 0.07v
    Key on: 12.4v
    Cranked: 13.7v
    - Battery terminal as ground had same results.
    If nobody knows I'm just gonna ignore it because I dont have emissions tests here and it shows no driveability issues either, so likley unimportant.
    But I kinda wanted to understand if my EGR is being left open to exhaust or closed, with the signal from the solenoid as-is. Anyone know by chance?
    Thanks!

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  Год назад +1

      Forget resistance testing. The problem with it is this:
      1. When it tests bad, it's bad.
      2. When it tests good, it can still be bad.
      You have a 2-wire EGR solenoid that is flagging a code immediately, even after clearing it. Is that correct?
      Step 1
      Solenoid plugged in, with the key on, measure voltage on both wires (backprobing) and give me those readings.

    After listening to your cautions on connecting 5 volt reference to signal wire and then the subsequent advisories to use a 5k resistor in series to do that, I was wondering. What if u used your test light to do that function. Your incandescent draws 200 miliamps at 12 volts, so probably less at 5. Or your other test light draws even less. So my question is. R there any signal circuits that would b harmed with the incandescent, and if so it would seem that the other test light (I forget the name of the diode type test l.e.d. It came to me) would always safely substitute for the 5 k resistor. And if so, wouldn't that be easier? Thank u!!!!

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  9 лет назад

      +Bill Rimmer My concern would be the resistance of the test light is greatly affected by the heat of the filament. A bulb that is not lit has very little resistance and 5v will not light one of these test lights.
      Does that make sense?

    • @billrimmer5596
      @billrimmer5596 9 лет назад

      Yes it does. The cold filament would act basically as a jumper wire. The only idea I was trying to test was this one. In trying to verify the integrity of the signal wire when there is no bias voltage, with the sensor unplugged, I can c now that the IC test light is not the way to go. The scenario I was envisioning was, scanner on the circuit, sensor unplugged, led test light jumping between 5 volt ref and signal wire to observe rise to 5 volts on the scanner. The only reason I mention this is we always have scan tool and both test lights handy. We don't always have the 5 k resistor.

    • @ScannerDannerPremium
      @ScannerDannerPremium 9 лет назад

      +Bill Rimmer You could unplug the ECT or IAT and use it's signal wire as your "protected" 5v ref for your integrity test on another sensor.
      If this makes sense to you, then major props to you my friend, you've been paying attention.

    Hey...you are a great teacher..I bought your book recently and love it...I have a 2006 ford Taurus with a p0401 code. I did the test you did..my dpfe didnt go to 4 volts while running but only rose from 1v to 1.3 and the engine did stall...so does this concludes my dpfe is faulty?

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  3 года назад

      Thank you! Redo the test now at 1500-2000 RPM to prevent it from stalling and make sure the voltage on the DPFE rises to at least 4v .
      It is possible it rose higher than 1.3 during your test but the voltmeter wasn't fast enough to catch the peak voltage before the stall. If it stays low voltage, then make sure you have a good 5v ref and ground on the DPFE and also that the hoses going to the DPFE are not damaged before changing it

    Thanks for this video !!! I have stiil HUGE problem with my Mustang 2004/ 3.8 litre! After replacing bigger fuelpump, 255 lph, and bigger throttle body 70mm, my idle has been "crazy", goes to 2500, after about 20-30 seconds lowers to 1100-1200, never goes below??? There is a big vacuumleak somewhere, I know, because my AC works, but air is going to face first, like it supposed to then suddenly goes to difroze, to window, even I don't touch anything?? I was told that is a sign for vacuum leak. My "check engine" codes are P0507= IA Control higher than expected, sure know that!!!, and P0405 Exhaust gas recirculation sensor a Circuit low??? I tested so far, like you teach here!!!!, if my DPFE works, it is fine, I replaced it year ago, bought a new one now, no change, will return it, no change!!! Replaced TBS, IAC sensor, and EGR valve, all good!!??? I did checked voltage to canister solenoid sensor, in rear, that seems to work fine, when applied 12 V, and blow for it, it did close!!! I did not replace that one, I sprayed all over under hood, all vacuumhoses, no leak?? I did take out canister purge valve, could not really test it??, opened it, cleaned it???, put it back??, can't really tell, if it works?? Could that be open all the time?? And make big leak in vacuum system, and make idle higher??? I will replace that next, after taking back new DPFE sensor, old one is fine??? So confused, driving a car, thanks god, it is manual, very hard to drive, and gasmileage terrible!!! Please help me, smoking test next??? Thanks=)

      I thought I did but cannot find it. It is similar in testing except if my memory is correct, the single exhaust tube used for the DPFE sensor is exposed to manifold vacuum instead of exhaust gases all the time. I guess they finally figured out why the sensors would all fail.

      Reversed hoses on the DPFE sensor would do that. Is the sensor new?

    • @israelduartejr4517
      @israelduartejr4517 2 года назад

      Yes sensor is new. I tested the old aswell after that fact that i had bought and it reads 1v aswell so both old and new dpfe are good. I also cleaned the intake passages and replaced with new egr since the old one was gummed up. So all i need is to reverse the hoses

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  2 года назад

      @israelduartejr4517 that's what it is acting like for sure. Usually it's hard to mix them up as the hoses are slightly different diameter, but if they've been replaced before it can be difficult. The smaller tube on the DPFE sensor should be the upstream hose (closest to the EGR valve) I think 🤔

    You always talk about the engineers and they should let us now about what is inside a module, I have Bentley manual for BMW 5 series and I can see what inside the module if the transistor is grounded or + feed. By the way you never work on German car's? I have Mercedes and BMW and they are not easy to backprobe molded connectors.

      Plugged EGR passages would be suspect. Manually open the EGR (hand vacuum pump) and see what it does to confirm

      If it is this sensor I'm testing in this video, do what I showed.
      Step 1 is to get me voltage readings on all 3 wires of the DPFE sensor with the key on, sensor plugged in, backprobing

    Yes the flow chart sucks. But you have to understand how the whole system works and ground side test, and so on. The flow chart is for those that do not have the understanding. But because you understand the system so good, and you showed the google pic of the system it makes sence. Which brings up a good point, All flow charts should have a pic with with elec, and vacume values on that picture, and then the flow chart. Hopefully the day will come when flowcharts are obsolte and instead the manufactures will supply a usb flashdrive with a videos from you, or someone like you on every TBC.for engine management and everything else. In fact with your paper book you should have a flashdrive included. I wonder if your e-book has click links? And of couse lastly as you keep saying you must understand your tools and have the money to but them. I have heard you say on ERic the car guy that the school owns most of the tools you use.... Lucky you...

  • @333SkateOrDie333
    @333SkateOrDie333 5 месяцев назад

    I hate to be that guy... As a ford tech... The tube to the intake manifold (copper elbow) is definitely clogged with the carbon deposits. 100 % that car came back a few days later of not that same day. Every 3.0 that comes in with that i sell an intake reaeal and clean the tube brand new. Any one in the comments with this code. Dont throw solenoids or egr valves. Waste of money. The code sets because indeed the flow is low. Cant pull a vacuum on the valve to regulate flow. 👍

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  5 месяцев назад

      Of course intake passages do get restricted. I have videos on this too. But in this case that was NOT the case. If the intake passage was plugged, the idle would not have gotten very rough and almost stall when I forced the EGR valve to open.
      100% this car did not comeback

      @@ScannerDanner that's a good question,i haven't the means to test these components properly to pin point the exact problem,i just thought it was odd that the po 401 insuffient flow code went away and was replaced by po 405 EGR signal A circuit voltage low,in either case the car runs great with these issues,meaning it idles fine and runs fantastic as well...the only draw back is my gas milege took a hit in about 2-3 miles per gallon,i'm selling the car but would like to sort the issue before doing so,i've had these issues for over a year with no drivability issues whatsoever,i did buy an egr valve and gasket maybe ill replace that today,thx you for your help,these issues are such a headache,lol

      Return the EGR valve, that's not your problem with the p0405 code.
      Make sure you didn't reverse the hoses on the dpfe sensor
