Max Steiner is a huge reason I love old movies!He told a story with his beautiful story.
So happy these classic films and scores have been preserved and can be appreciated and enjoyed now. This is one of the great war films that, instead, focused on the homefront sacrifices rather than the battlefield.
The music for Casablanca and Gone With the Wind are not only some of the best in film history, those soundtracks are some of the finest music in general ever produced in the United States. He wasn't a native of our country, but I'm sure thankful for him. I've enjoyed his music my whole life.
Pure bliss Max was out their on his own, never heard such beautiful music.
Max Steiner-I've just got to say...well crud. I can't think of words adequate enough to describe the musical genius this man had. What incredible musical gifts he left for the world to enjoy.
A memorable movie with unforgettable music. "Since you went away", the four most important words since "Gone with the Wind."
Mark T: That's how producer Selznick promoted this film. Which was answered by director Billy Wilder putting out a newspaper spread about His own film, Double Indemnity, as "The greatest two words since "Broken Blossoms." ( BB a mamothly legendary silent film by DW Griffith). This duel of Artists was ended when Alfred Hitchcock put out a large newspaper spread reading that The greatest two words in Hollywood since the release of Double Indemnity were "Billy Wilder." (!!)
Very interesting. Thank you Colleen. I have both "Gone with the Wind" and "Since you went away" on DVD and enjoy them both. The soundtrack on both movies is simply amazing. Max Steiner was indeed a genius. He wrote some of the most beautiful musical scores ever produced for Hollywood. So beautiful and so relaxing to sit back and listen too.
Great soundtrack especially the theme, beautiful, dramatic, and heart wrenching, one of my favorite WWII films

1944: Max Steiner's third, and last, Oscar-winning score. There should have been more. Steiner had it written in his Warner Bros. contracts that he could moonlight for David O. Selznick whenever his old boss at RKO asked him. The original master of the movie soundtrack, who started in Hollywood at 41 in 1929 and wrote over 300 soundtracks over the next 35 years or so.

These were transfers from Max's acetates of the scoring sessions. The quality has always been amazing.
I agree, I own the limited edition of the 2 LP release from these acetate record source, and I'd like to say the sound quality as been significantly improved with the digital transfer here.
We are fortunate Max Steiner had an out in his contract with Warner Bros. that he could compose film scores for David O. Selznick. "Since You Went Away," I think this was Selznick's best picture after "Gone With The Wind" and is greatly enhanced by Steiner's Oscar winning film music.

The Selznick International fanfare was composed by Alfred Newman, who also did the fanfares for Samuel Goldwyn and, of course, Twentieth Century-Fox.
+Peter Haas Hi Peter, it was actually composed by Max Steiner himself. David O. Selznick asked him to compose the fanfare.
Sorry but you 're wrong, Newmann wrote it, all the sources I own testifiy it.

Hi Fred, I'm so glad to discover here this soundtrack, for I own the LP version released in the 80's and found in HMV shop in London then !
This was a limited LP edition then divided in 4 parts from the original acetate records property of the composer. The 4 parts were of course the 4 sides of the 2LP records.
I don't know if this recording is now commercially released on CD but I consider it as one of the greatest of Max.
Thank you to broadcast it for the new generation which help to spread the work of this wonderfull composer.
By the way was Murray Cuter his orchestrator on this score ?

Hello Bernard, the music was indeed from a newer double cd release that features the complete elements of the score.
Murray Cutter didnt orchestrate this time, it was partly orchestrated by Steiner himself, Jerome Moross, Frank Perkins, Leonid Raab and Frank Skinner.

Thank you Fred for that details. Orchestrators are often forgotten, but the add of their skills make so much for a score. Two of the men you mentionned are unknown of me, because two others are also composers (shame on me :-))!

There was also an interesting pairing that came out in 1973 on Angel records (S-36068): "Max Steiner conducts his Academy Award-winning great film music: 'Since you went away,' 'Now voyager, 'The informer'/ flip side: "Alex North: 'A streetcar named Desire,' original soundtrack from the 1951 Academy Award-film." The former is comprised of three suites, running 9:41, 8:57, and 7.40 respectively. In the excellent liner notes (really a four-page insert), there in an extremely informative section outlining the history of the recordings of the four scores (none of which were as-yet labeled "original soundtrack recording") up to 1973.
Hi William, you're right, I listened this recordings it a a bunch a very interresting recordings. I doesn't own the LP by have been lucky enough to download the CD version with all the artworks sleeves and booklet reproducing the origianal LP design. Yes Steiner conducting himself his masterpieces, it is a great deal !
I must admit, ashamed, I began collecting soundtracks as a teenager in the 70's in LP media, going on later in ther 80's & 90's on CD's, and since about the 2000's still bying on CD's but downloading some rare or too expensive releases on the net. So this Steiner work is one of them. By the way I also got Since You Went Away digitalized in four parts by this way.
Elmer Bernstein must have been inspired by this music for his score to From the Terrace. Love theme very similar.
Two years after my previous posts, I must add, the sound in this 2 CDs release is far more improved compared with my 2LP records bought in the 80's. No longer clics or surface noise car be heard here; just great sound !
