I was just a seven-year-old kid back then, but I can still remember the big clunky aluminum speaker that you hung on your window and the sonorous tones of the opening film score for El Cid. The way it reverberated through the confined space of that old station wagon of ours, oh my God!
This is simply one of the greatest film scores ever composed. That stirring music for THE BATTLE OF CALAHORRA! To quote Marilyn Monroe on the subject of music: "It shakes me, it quakes me. It makes me feel goose-pimply all over. I don't know where I am, or who I am, or what I'm doing. Don't stop, don't stop!"
@@jesavino1255 Plus Quo Vadis, The Thief of Baghdad, Sodom and Gomorrah, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Julius Caesar, Ivanhoe, The Knights of the Round Table, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (with a theme based on his Violin Concerto Op. 24), Time After Time...Rozsa is my absolute favorite of the "Golden Age" soundtrack composers. His work stands up to that of any of the great classical composers.
Seeing the original on a huge theatre screen with the sound up high...unforgettable. No green screen, no CGI and only practical stunts. Still my all-time favorite "big movie" soundtrack.

Stunning score! It's my personal favourite from the incredibly rich contributions he made to the 'epic' genre. And this re-recording is about as good as it gets. What amazes me is the detailed research Rozsa would undertake into the music of the particular historical period in which those epics were set, El Cid being no exception. He would then transform his score into a 20th Century late-romantic idiom such as this. The thing about great film scores is that they can be appreciated by listeners who haven't even seen the films for which they were written.

Et une fois encore félicitons cette réalisation qui nous fascine par la magnificence d'écriture du maître en la matière...Miklos Rozsa. La puissance, la grâce, l'émotion que dégage cette fresque symphonique sont parfaitement rendues avec l'interprétation sans faille de cet orchestre de Prague et de son chef Nic Raine. Grandiose !

Ce qui est plus surprenant dans cette discographie c'est la version d'Yvanhoé interprétée par The Sinfonia of London dirigé par Bruce Broughton sur une reconstitution de Daniel Robbins. Il est vrai que l'oeuvre de Miklos Rozsa est tellement vaste et fournie soit en versions originales, avec les enregistrements aux qualités parfois un peu justes maintenant que nous avons goûté aux nouvelles réalisations, ou bien reprises par d'autres interprètes que l'on en découvre toujours, même si l'on possède une discothèque déjà bien constituée. En cette période de confinement, il y a de quoi se cultiver encore plus ! Merci Eric.

Maybe...but only arguably so. EL CID is my favorite epic by Rozsa, just beating out SODOM AND GOMORRAH (which is perhaps more beautiful melodically).
