    Hi Dr Ed,
I want to thank you for all of the videos that you post. I had put out a question to you yesterday, but continued looking until I found this one! Thanks!
This particular video answers one of my specific questions regarding a small pension that I started receiving when I turned 70. I didn’t even know that I had anything coming to me until the company that I worked for over 30 years ago gave me a call and let me know.
So happy that it will not affect my SS!

I’ve worked for the county for 27.5 years so far, I’m one of the lucky ones that has a pension still. I am 52 years old, and plan on retiring in March 2026 with 28.9 months of work. I am so glad that my social security income will not be affected. I have paid into social security since I was 15 years old. And pay almost $1200 a month towards my pension every month.

Thank you for doing this video. I have a pension, and also have enough points to collect SS now. Since I’m working Pt I’m still giving SS a few more years to grow since I’ll be penalized. This really seems like a punch in the gut to me. I worked hard when younger and still working to have a good retirement, but Gov is saying to me….’oh let’s not let you have too much money to survive during retirement, so let’s take away some!’

I was told by Social Security that I would not have to worry about WEP since I worked over 35 years full time and contributed to social security. At age 55 I took a city job that I didn’t contribute social security . After 10 years I qualify for a small pension . I was told that I paid into SS or so long that I don’t qualify for WEP . Is this correct?

One other issue that needs to be addressed. My brother in law has severe diabetes. He was trying to get SS disability several years ago and asked for help from a law firm. We don't know what if anything they did but a year later after a double amputation on his leg and several visits at the local SS Office, he was approved for SS disability and there was some backpay. YOU CAN BET THAT LAW FIRM THAT WE HAVE NO RECORD OF ANY HELP FROM came in and took over $3000 of that backpay. Warn your listeners.

I enjoy your videos with their real-life examples and solid answers. I wonder if some people think the 13% reduction you talk about is additional or coming in the future. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's been known for years (1983) and has already been baked into any SS benefit estimate you get. Sure I'd like more $$, but it is what it is and no point lamenting what it could have been and causing unneeded angst in folks.

However, Social Security will take 2/3 of whatever I get from my ex-husband‘s retirement. @marcyeverest589 12 дней назад

If you paid social security tax while working for the state, then there is no increase in Social Security for you. The Fairness Act bill only applies to public service workers who did "not" pay a social security tax while they were working for that government entity. Only 3 percent of retired Americans were in this category-- the majority were working for the Post Office.

My pension had a Deffered Retirement Option Payment (DROP). This allows you to retire, and they reinvest those payments back into the pension. Then, your monthly pension payment gets reinvested by the pension. Once you actually leave the company, you can withdraw those funds and just pay federal taxes. Do these DROP payouts count towards your IRMA taxes?

If you never sign up for Medicare Part B or Part D when you are first eligible, you will likely face a late enrollment penalty when you do eventually enroll, meaning you will have to pay a higher monthly premium for as long as you are enrolled in Medicare; this penalty is typically calculated as a percentage increase based on how long you delayed enrollment, with Part B penalties being 10% per year of delayed enrollment and Part D penalties being 1% per month of delayed enrollment. I'M paying a penalty .

I have the same thing. Military Pension, 401k, and disability from the VA. Should I wait till 67 to draw SS. I want to retire from my private job at age 65 after 20 years but I see a loss of $400 a month if I take it then. I have worked a straight 46 years but I was thinking of waiting until 67 to draw it.

The cola came out. 3.2 % is nothing. So where do they get these numbers because the politicians are not present in any of this. We only here about it, but the amount of the cola is low.. for 2024.

I believe it is only based on data from the third quarter of the year. This year those months were more favorable than the first six months of the year. In that way it seems to act more like a snapshot to predict next year rather than to make up for the past year.

  • @dennisniemeyer8360

The 3%. did not pay 6.2% FICA taxes on 100% of lifetime wages. Back in the day agreement was they avoided fica taxes to have those funds diverted to give them a larger personal pension benefit (both their and employer side contributions went to increasing their pension check size. ). They also knew their social security SS checks would be shorted as a consequence. Too bad the normal everyday worker (the other 97%) can’t avoid paying fica taxes to grow his/her own personal IRA/4o1K benefit (their weaker version of a pension)--And expect no reduced SS check consequences. . That would bankrupt social security. This only benefits the 3% who avoided paying fica taxes on 20-40 years of a non FICA paying pensioned job. Some with pensions paid BOTH fica all along and also contributed significant pay to their pensions. How is this fair to them?

To be clear. My IBEW pension counts as income if I take early SS? Say I start at 65 but FRA is 67.

OK, suppose a spouse works on Wall Street or for GM or Ford and gets a big pension or 401k benefit, etc. for that work - he/she is NOT penalized on spousal benefits under SS but you seem to support shortchanging folks who worked in public service jobs when it comes to these benefits??? I don't get the fact that some public service folks did not pay into SS for that work - they did pay into a system to get the retirement benefit so WHY are they cut short on spousal benefits under SS??? I notice you never explain your stance on this? or try to justify this TAKING based on no justifiable reason other than it's just another way to de-value public service work. Hoping this THEFT ends today.

YOU, Dr. Weir, do NOT understand fully that WEP was indeed earned. I don't understand your negativity towards this. Geeeeez.

    • @roberttauriainen9242
      @roberttauriainen9242 10 дней назад +1

I don’t totally understand this, but it looks like the people punished by WEP will get 90% return versus 50% return normal people get regardless of lifetime earnings. The 90% return was meant for poor people. I think he feels that the WEP punished people should also get 50% return like the rest of non poor people. It now turns into a benefit for WEP people because they get 90% while not necessarily being poor.
