Best thing to happen to the '07 Giants was that last regular season Sunday night game against the Patriots. The Giants had the 5-seed locked up win or lose. They could have rested players but they said "bullshit, we're playing all out to win". They came up short at 38-35 and the Patriots went 16-0. But afterward the Giants knew that after that performance they could go up in the playoffs against anybody.

  • @roostertheCat

I got to put the 2020 Buccaneers as one of the most surprising Wild Card teams to win the Super Bowl. They were completely dismantled by the Saints in the regular season (twice), then were able to defeat three future HOF quarterbacks in the postseason. Then to exact complete destruction on the favored Pat Mahomes-led Chiefs offense in the Super Bowl was just shocking. Although, the 2007 G-Men languishing through the better part of the regular season, then "powering on" at the end and defeating the undefeated Patriots, was the most impressive Wild Card team I've ever witnessed.

2007 Giants is undoubtedly one of the biggest underdog stories in all of sports history. First they beat 9-7 Bucs who got hot late in the season, then they beat NFC's #1 seed, the 13-3 Cowboys who looked very good and were favourites from NFC to go to the Superbowl, shocked everyone. Then they beat 14-3 Packers in one of the coldest games of all time. And on top of all that, in the Superbowl they beat 18-0 Patriots (which up until the Superbowl, was considered the greatest team of all time) Cowboys were heavily favoured to beat them, couldn't do it. Packers were favourite to beat them, couldn't do it. And Patriots were already considered a Superbowl winners, and still couldn't get it done. Just phenomenal

Yeah, but again I was a little kid. I liked, UGH I HATE even admitting this, I liked the Vikings. Fran Tarkenton, Chuck Foreman, and the helmet looked cool. So when they played each other and the Steelers WON AGAIN, I was crushed. Now HEH HEH HEH HEH, as a Packers fan....LOSE Vikings LOSE.
But then the Packers who were not suppose to make it, DID MAKE IT, and BEAT the Steelers. My buddy has long since been moved, but it was so awesome to see us, the Packers as underdogs kick butt. That was a GREAT YEAR!

Let me see here. The first "non-divisional winner" to go all the way was the Kansas City Chiefs, but they weren't a "Wild Card" team because the term didn't exist then. By that logic the first two World Championships of Pro Football were not Super Bowls because the term didn't exist then, except in the mind of Lamar Hunt. "Super Bowl" became the official name of that contest beginning with the third annual game. The only reason the Chiefs got to the playoffs during the 1969 season was because the AFL wanted an extra playoff weekend in it's last year before the merger. The Chiefs earned the chance to redeem their loss to the Packers in that first Championship. They beat the world champion Jets and then beat the Raiders who had beat them twice during the season. The Vikings had an awesome defense, one of the best in NFL history, but their offense could only produce 7 points in a 23-7 loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl IV.

2010 Packers won games by an average score of 24-15, which based on the point differential formula, gave them an expected W-L record of 12-4, despite going 10-6, had the second lowest scoring defense in the league that year, and led the NFL in passer rating differential. That team was actually very dominant, when compared to the others on this list.

The 2005 Steelers defied no odds. They were coming off a 15-1 season the year prior, dropped a few games because Ben was injured, and finished 11-5 which is usually good enough to win a division and get a 3 or 4 seed but lost a tie breaker to Cincy. That team was good and better than people were willing to credit them for. But they actually almost choked away the Super Bowl and got bailed out by the refs.

You don’t win the division, then you’re a wildcard team even if it isn’t referred to as such.
Another reason why the Chiefs wildcard rampage was ignored might have something to do with it happening BEFORE the NFL/AFL merger. In fact, the Chiefs ass whooping of the Vikings was the final game before the merger.
