- After some exciting Island-Hopping flights in Greece, I visited Aegean Airlines hangar to see an A320 undergoing a heavy maintenance D check (12-year check). I saw the “naked” airplane with all the seats and panels removed. The engineer explained to me about their maintenance process and showed me the rudder, the horizontal stabilizer, tail, thrust reverser and the engine of A320. Then I visited a brand-new Aegean Airlines A321neo. I was able to power up the airplane and be the first to tour the brand-new airplane.
Next, I went back at Athens Int’l Airport to visit the Aegean Airlines Business Lounge. I flew on an Olympic Air Dash8-Q400 to Samos. I had a tour at Samos and saw lot of immigrants and refugees on the island before flying back to Athens during the sunset.
The next day I visited the old Athens Ellinikon Airport, there was an Olympic B727, a B737 and a B747 there. I was there at the same site in 2001, just before the old airport closed down. I met Nikolas, who shared with me a story of the Olympic OA411; which came close to crashing in downtown Athens, following an engine explosion while taking off.

For me Olympic Airways, it's a lot of memories especially when I was a child I traveled alone with them and the hostesses took very good care of me. My mother was traveling with them with me in her womb. And one day it became Aegean and I was told that Olympic had ceased its operations, but it remains an extension of the experience.
In my country house in Greece I have a spoon with Olympic Airways written on it, they gave it to my mother the first time I took the plane.
For the Greeks this company remains steeped in history and we all have a nostalgia.
But with Aegean I have many good memories in particular.
That’s my small island, Samos and I can’t believe that my favorite RUclipsr was there and I didn’t meet him! Thank you for visiting Samos Sam!

The name of the engineer at 0:36 is Stergios Magalios, not Diegos Malaius as the subs say. The name of the captain at 9:06 is Gerasimos Paschalinos. The name of the pilot at 19:18 and 19:47 who saved the plane from crashing back in 1978 is Captain Sifis Migadis. Interesting story, he was flying at 55m height just over houses touching stadium lights. In 19:52, he says that's the mountain (hill in reality) of Alimos. Alimos is the name of the suburb where you are while the hill he shows you is called Pani (pronounced as panee). And, the old airport is called Hellinikon at 19:53. Hellinikon means Greek.

A concern for smaller operators is the quality of safety and inspection. Some outsource their work to sketchy foreign firms. Agean might not have the newest aircraft, but if they are rigorously inspected, that is no barrier to safety - and this looks pretty rigorous to me.
That dude is directly responsible for me not dying in a violent inferno. He seems pretty excited about it. I respect that.

When the A320 arrive at gate, we often hear this sound and wonder is there someone below us chainsawing the plane to open the baggage hold? 😂
@@SamChui The PTU will spool up when they turn one engine off after they land and are taxiing to the gate and when they start 1 engine and before the other engine starts. It keeps 2 sources of hydraulic pressure available at all times.

That brand new Aegean A321neo is just awesome! I don't know why Olympic air stopped operating big jets, like they did operate the 747s and 737s. Sad to see them just disappear! A great video yet again Sam!
Hey! The reason why Olympic Airways stopped flying big jets is that they went bankrupt. They changed their name to Olympic Air and became a part of Aegean Airlines. Also there were some A319 and A320 flying for Olympic Air some years ago.

From what I’ve read, Olympic was (essentially) the airline of Greece; with a vast domestic, Continental (inter-Europe) and international flights. I read about what is essentially the airline’s fall from grace however, I still have no clue why it happened.

@@ScottRothsroth0616 Olympic thrived early when it was still under Onassis' ownership. After the nationalization, the airline ran into mismanagement, overstaffing, hiring people who had connections to politicians despite not being qualified to work in the airline etc etc etc, on the other hand unions were causing a mess with strikes e.g. Olympic Airways had to shut down in 2003, when its subsidiary called Macedonian Airlines was renamed into Olympic Airlines and acquired the former OAs assets. Continuing with mismanagement and increasing debts, it was eventually closed in 2009. Olympic Air was a new airline that simply bought the rights for the logo and the name, but also failed until it eventually was acquired by Aegean Airlines

I flew that 747-200 in 1996 ATH to SYD via BKK. Cockpit visits, smoking in the rear of the plane and unlimited booze still an option.

When I went to Greece in November 1989 it was on SX-OAB Melbourne-Bangkok-Athens; I remember the food was really good and drank several wines and spirits during the flight

Sam I think you were a little harsh on the pilot regarding her landing. It was a somewhat long and slightly bumpy. But she is only a 2nd officer and your blog reaches millions of people. I know that if I was her you would have hurt my feelings by including that comment in your video.
Beautiful country, beautiful people and delicious food- thats what makes Greece top. Aegean/Olympic is a fantastic business and love the new Aegean Livery and aircraft. It would be great to see a few long haul aircraft in the future!

Nice! I remember as a kid when we used to watch planes take off from old Athens airport the police would seal off the road when a 747 was taking off to prevent people and cars from being blown off! That is how close the road was to the runway...

fuel consumption, for literally 1000 less, stupid aegean bosses together with French persuasion over their ATR , I'm livid and pretty much all ground personnel, hate the ATR, a nightmare of an A/C to load and manage

Been on that flight but it was operated with an ATR, landing in Samos is really an intense experience, only Greeks well trained pilots can afford it.

At 18:49 the story of OA411 1978 is similar to the movie Sully, minus 2-3 differences.
1. The engine failure probably happened earlier during takeoff. Other technical details are different.
2. Capt. Migadis was able to go around and land the plane.
3. Boeing simulations were not able to replicate the fortunate ending. In every scenario, feeding those technical parameters in the sim, the plane crashed.
His experience, skills and quick judgment saved lives. He dropped altitude despite flying low to gain just enough speed to make the plane manoeuvrable and land back at the airport after dumping fuel. Boeing never acknowledged what happened in their reports they couldn’t explained what happened. Captain Sifis Migadis is a real hero.
Just wish every airline that have The Queen B747 did keep one of it for museum purposes. 😭😭😭

37-year-old Amid Mammadov stops passers-by on the streets of Tbilisi, asks them to record videos and distribute his story on the Internet.
He says that he has to turn to the public for help because he and his mother were left without a livelihood. They have nowhere to sleep, nothing to eat, no clothes and no medicine for their mother.
Amid Mammadov is a Baku Iranian. He says that in Baku he had many problems due to his ethnic origin.
Amid does not have citizenship, unlike his mother, who is a citizen of Azerbaijan. He lives in Tbilisi with his mother, rents a daily apartment and every day risks being on the street.

We are Baku Iranians. All routes are closed for us in Baku. When it is very difficult to live in your hometown, you have to leave there. Many Baku Iranians, like us, are leaving Azerbaijan.
Mother and grandmother had an apartment in Baku. Grandma died. We wanted to sell the apartment and buy another, smaller one. We were deceived, told to give us $3,000 first, re-issue, we will pay the rest in the near future, but did not pay. So we lost the apartment and were left without a roof over our heads.
I worked as a painter at a foreign factory in Baku for 4 years. He painted large containers. He worked as a gardener, washed the windows of large shops.
I'm a stateless person. I was born in Uzbekistan, my mother lived there when she gave birth to me, then we returned to Baku. I only have my ID and birth certificate.
For 18 years I have been writing to the government of Uzbekistan, sending copies of documents for citizenship, but in vain. In Baku, it is difficult for a stateless person to find work.When we were left without an apartment in Azerbaijan, we sometimes had to spend the night in the park. The police decided that we were Qigans when they found out that we were Iranian Baku, the police said go to Iran, because Armenia is friends with Iran.
When I said that they had no right to say so and that my mother was an Azerbaijani citizen, they said that we were shaming the country and the city.
In Azerbaijan, we were interviewed on radio and television, they wrote about us in newspapers, but the authorities did not react. Only ordinary people helped us with rent for 2 months, medicines, food and clothes.
In Azerbaijan, the mother does not yet have a pension, she is 58 years old, there women are awarded a pension from 65 years old. When we submitted documents to state institutions, we were told that we are Armenians, because our historical homeland Iran is friends with Armenia.
Many times we turned to Azerbaijani deputies for help through television, but their answer was - go to Iran and ask for housing and work there.
In Baku, we stayed at the office of the Commissioner for Human Rights Elmira Suleymanova for five days, no one listened to us.I didn't even graduate. As a child, my mother transferred me from the hospital to the hospital due to health problems. Because of my Iranian background, I experienced a lot of humiliation as a child.
Father died, mother has health problems, she needs surgery. We came to Georgia three years ago with the hope of finding work.
I washed the windows in large stores and made money with this, offered me another job, a loader, but I could not master it. I'm weak because sometimes I have nothing to eat, my bones hurt.
The money that I earned went to pay for daily accommodation, there was no money left for food. Sometimes tourists, sometimes Georgian Azerbaijanis, sometimes clergy helped us with food, clothes, medicines.
We cannot reach anyone, all the doors are closed for us, this is hellish suffering.
My mother and I freeze at night, my mother in a thin dress, her lungs constantly hurt, she has high pressure every day, maybe someone will help us with drugs, clothes and food.
I ask the Georgian authorities to give me the opportunity to work, so that I can somehow exist. Maybe there is some kind of work and temporary housing for me.We have acquaintances in Istanbul, and they told us that it's not difficult to find work there, I could treat my mother there, but the borders are closed. Even if the border opens, my mother will be able to go there without a visa, but as a stateless person, I need to pay $50 for a visa, for us this is an unrealistic amount.
Kaladze (mayor of Tbilisi) in the days of the celebration of the New Year, somehow walked the streets and we told him about his situation. He told us to go to City Hall, and they'll try to help us. I wrote an appeal, but did not receive an answer.
Now we live in a house where you have to pay for a room every day. If we can't pay, we'll have to go out again.

I've been on that flight with the 747 Olympic eagle belive it or not in the 1980s..It was coming from new York picked me up from Heathrow's London airport and went to Athens with that exact plane I remember the name ..

Hi Sam. This is not a complaint, but merely a suggestion. You seem to have some difficulty with singular and plural in English. You say the article or adjective in the singular form and the object in the plural form. Like saying one chickens or two duck. I have faith that you will get this right. I have many Asian friends that maybe do not speak English as well as you, but they get the agreements between the adjectives and nouns correct. Keep making good videos. All the best.
