- “The guitar was like a language, each chord was like a sentence, each part was a paragraph or a chapter, and then you could create a whole story, and I became obsessed." Watch Tim McIlrath of Rise Against dive into his creative process and why he’s always played with Ernie Ball strings.
String Theory is a web series from Ernie Ball that explores the sonic origins of some of music's most innovative guitar players.

This was probably one of the best interviews Tim has ever done.
Legendary man in a legendary band
My band wouldn't be existed without your band. Thanks Tim.
I have so much respect for Tim. I met him after a Rise Against show back in October. Such an awesome guy!
Tim’s music kept me alive during the toughest times of my life

My Favorite String Of Lyrics... :)
Nicholas that was my favorite album along with endgame album. I can't help myself, but I shed tears everytime I listen to their music.
This man is one of the few people I've ever idolized
If someone made me addicted to rock, that one would be Tim.
I first heard rise against when I was 6 or 7 years old, my brother was playing Tony Hawks underground and I heard like the angel come on and that intro bass riff followed by tims vocals just blew my mind. My first pack of strings was a pack of regular slinky strings and I remember looking at the back of the packaging and seeing bands I loved like rise against, Afi, green day, incubus and so many other bands I knew these were the strings for me
I love his college professor analogy. I'm working on my PhD in science and am aspiring to be a professor some day, to teach and to do research. There's a big push these days in research to make huge discoveries and to change the world. But you can't always do that, not everybody can change the world. That's one of my biggest lessons from my 5 years in graduate school. Sometimes you just need to step back and look at the basics, look at things from a fundamental point of view. Small steps can build up. Thanks for the inspiring words Tim. Rise Against has always been a huge source of inspiration and comfort for me.
willturnbull91 never stop trying ones silence can do more damage than there words ever could
I've delved further into metalcore as I've aged, but Rise Against has always remained one of my top 3. Soundtrack of my middle/high-school days. Fantastic interview.
I've always loved that riff for Survive at 2:46. He plays it so clean, I just can't figure it out how to do it (I know it's not that difficult).
nahailyenvanakkor all in the right hand. Plus hes definitely using a noise gate.
If you write it, it comes natural :D
You just have to tell your wrist to be loose.
Easier said than done, but that's the way to do it. Any tension at all and you're going to mess it up every time.
Also, a light pick helps quite a bit. Looks like he's using a Tortex 0.50mm.
@@royalcat10 he is using the orange tortex 0.60
I know...I've always struggled with this riff because I find it difficult to keep your wrist and forearm relaxed while maintaining a firm grip on the pick. I normally use a primetone 1.4mm because for me it's the easiest to maintain a solid grip on. But it's way too stiff for a fast riff like this. I've tried the same tortex 0.60 Tim is using in the vid but they just fly out of my hands.
Those are some wicked, tight rhythm chops. Top tier.
He's just like I expected him to be! A hero of out time. Teaching the young about what's happening, showing us what's real, good and bad. I've always looked up to this guy and the band. Realy love their music and hope kind of to one day become a part of a band myself and sing my heart out as Tim does. Respect!
Saturday morning, cup of coffee in my hand and watching this. Priceless.
I was always confused when it came to music, I didn’t fully understand what I really liked. Then a friend introduced me to Rise Against and from that point on I wasn’t confused anymore. Their music has gotten me through some pretty nasty points in life.
Been listening to everything from baxter, killing tree, rise against and all the bands side projects since 2005. Tim and the band has made such an impact on my life. I hope to one day I can actually meet them.
He is a King of punk rock!
The guitar sounds sooooo good! Also gotta love Tim and Rise Against.
Makes me super sad to see him getting older..but its aldo reflected in his lyrics...he's amazing and rise against is still an amazing band
You are gonna get older too, so don't be sad.
I'm convinced this will stay my favorite band until the day I leave this planet.
Exactly, me too!
In my opinion I think Tim is more of a poet/lyricist than a musician. I love every single RA song, and he's a great musician, don't get me wrong. But I was drawn to his music mostly because of what he writes, and the language he uses to communicate through music. I just think that Tim is cut from his own bark, and just being labelled a musician is not enough to describe him.
He, more than any musician I can think of, embodies the Idea that music is modern poetry. Somy lyrics of his can be compared to the most famous poets and look good.
I've always been blown away by how his words flow and the way they paint images in your head. He's been my favorite lyricist for years.
As a guitar player I can say he is very much a musician his guitar parts are so creative and pretty difficult
Thank you Ernie Ball for making these videos. You've included so many artists that have had such an impact on my life. Nothing motivates me to pick up my guitar and practice than these videos. Thank you.
He totally succeeded when they finally came to Spokane a couple months ago. Amazing band, amazing crowd. Amazing show, as expected. I just hope they don't take 22 years to get up here again.
Love rise against, I'll forever be a fan. For everything you said Tim. I could never quite put it into words but you did it for me tim, thank you guys for everything and your music and messages and sacrifices you do for your fans
Deryck from Sum-41 would be great in one of these
or Mr. Brownsound
This is amazing! Great job on the interview and cinematography.
This is beautiful AF
Anyone else after watching this, fall down the rabbit hole of Rise Against videos?
Saw Rise Against open for My Chemical Romance. It was incredible
so lucky
Me too. I’ve seen them open for My Chemical Romance also back in 2007. It was awesome!!!
One of the most intelligent dudes in modern punk..would love to have a coffee and just chat to him🙏🏿
He is a genius! Hearing his thoughts.... explaining how he view rise against interacts with his audience like a 101 class is remarkable!
11:03 great way of thinking!
Such a solid band, Tim is the man
This what I call an awesome interview! Please do one with Adam Jones !
They’re a big inspiration for me! Like Tim, I love writing original songs more than anything. I have some Rise Against covers on my channel as well!
can confirm that i am one of those kids in the front row at a rise against show that picked up a guitar because of them
Nothing but love and respect for Tim!
Do one with Daron Malakian (SoaD) please!
You called it lol.
I play the intro of this on repeat daily
Great interview with a beautiful person.
I love this man.
Yeah same reason why I love Ernieball strings; all my favorite bands use them
I miss dis song
John Mayer for string theory? He uses regular slinky
I love you Tim
Gotta respect the punk rockers! They're strumming is on points.

InEx945 wolves
What genre is rise against? This is my favorite band but everyone says there punk rock and I HATE PUNK ROCK but if they are punk then holy shit they make it sound good🎸🤤

It's a Sub-genre of Punk Rock though.
i fucking love tim
God Bless Rise Against
Please do a Steve Lukather String Theory!!!!!!!!
Cool
And first
Can someone please tell me what song the opening riff is from?
I'm relatively new to Rise Against...what song is the riff at the end from?
Song wolves👍
What's the song at 4:47? I can remember the song, but I just can't remember the title. Thanks for answering :)
It's the instrumental opening to Survive
When The Sufferer and the Witness was first released, the Survive intro was accidentally added to the end of The Good Left Undone. But to answer your question, its the Survive musical intro.
7:48 what song is that? Its amazing and i can't quite pinpoint it
MiteBeeMew Someone help I wanna know too!
@@jessestumpf190 it's the beggining of "Wolves".
I love what's going on here, but which string set does he use for the acoustic guitar?
He uses Everlast 80/20 bronze 12-54 gauge
is 10-46 on a lespaul good?
Ngl imo this is the best Tim's sounded on guitar
What song is that first riff? Sounds cool.
It's the breakdown from the song Wolves, off of their "newer" albums, and it's slowed down too. In the actual song, it's sort of faint, but you can still hear it, it's such a badass riff. 🙂
I love this man in a heterosexual way.
2:18 rage against the machine songs wtf ? ?
Guessing from when they gigged with them (see the stars next to some songs)
That's Behind Closed Doors from Rise Against
Oh, you mean the setlist :D
Whats the first song
Can anybody tell me the song that the first riff he plays is from
Plumberguy87 Yeah wolves
Hey guys, what song is that at 5:50? I couldn‘t figure it out...
People Live Here
What’s the name of the song he’s playing at 9:48
It's Wolves
Hey, what's the song at 7:48?
This is Letting Go - RA
Posese Pulu not too sure about this- sounds different to me man
Actually scratch that. I instantly thought of that song because of the progression but I was wrong. I'm trying to find it lol
It’s Wolves.
What's the song at 2:46?
It's called Survive.
Does anyone what the first song he plays is

Thanks
7:49 Song, anyone?
Subtítulos en español porfa :'v
People live here, yes.
The Wolves could be one of great Album of Rise Against but virgin records ruin everything. just compare with live sound
Virgin records had nothing to do with the sound. There they label not the producer not studio.
Love Tim, love RA, but Ernie Ball kinda sucks. Doesn't stay in tune, strings constantly break, never had the problem I had with strings like from D'Addario.
Oh lord! I hate his goddamn fizzy tone.. Full respect towards what he does. Thankfully his guitar does not quite sound like that in the albums
Jorgeä Baezp well, I love it. It's the punk rock sound, it's raw, aggressive and intense. I understand why you think it's bad, but that's the exact reason why it's so good.
dfp327 dunno, man! I'd rather have more volume and less gain. To each his own, BUT, i know for a fact green day uses more volume than gain
dfp327 also. Maybe it's just the mic the might be using. Chances are we are getting the camera audio and not the whole thing. After all, and like i said, in their recordings it does not sound like it. I also know that sometimes, in some tube amps, if they're hi watt and you run em at lo volume and that much gain you get fizziness. Dunno
The tone is the typical Rise Against Marshall tone they've been using since The Sufferer. Here he's going through what looks like a 1x12 Orange cab miced with a 57
Jorgeä Baezp yes, he is probably using the amp at a really low volume, since he's home, and as pointed above, it's a small cab. But besides that, the tone is pretty close to what he actually sounds live, which is really fizzy. But fizzy does not mean bad. If you listen to most punk rock albums from the 80's and 90's, the guitar sound is fizzy, and since those are some of Tim's biggest influences, he probably seek for this kind of tone.
might be some of the worst tone ive ever heard at the beginning jesus the rest pretty cool but damn
They really need to rip that silverburst out of his hands and give it to Adam Jones.
Ethan Aubrey Music is not a Meritocracy.
punk100000000 what's that supposed to mean?
Ethan Aubrey ruclips.net/video/kPVkNVbkIUQ/видео.html
I guess, I am the only one that is getting sick of people saying that. Players from the 80's are some mythical god. And you will never be like them. First off be yourself, Second practice more and whine less. If one human being can do it. Than many more can to, so stop being lazy.
Finally someone else gets it
Having uneven draw strings right at the start of a pretend-to-be-cool intro is the worst you can do, Tim.
Hin Heng Yuen Tim isn't the one who put this video together. He didn't put that as the intro. This channel did.
I've not once put on a sweatshirt and had the drawstrings line up perfectly, first go. Honestly, it's probably MORE pretend-to-be cool having to fiddle with them and crease them all the way around the hood lining just to line up because you're worried people WON'T think you're trying to have uneven strings...
Entropy is the natural course of the universe, my guy
One of the most pretentious, self righteous, holier-than-thou bands of all time
