Tyrion in S1 was a rounded character truer to the books. He's sassy and cynical while still charming and likeable. However, the writers took Dinklage's popularity in the role and decided to sanitize his character into a goody two shoes as the show progressed, when he's headed down a different path in the books.
It would have made zero sense for Tyrion to remain "sassy and cynical" (i.e carefree and irresponsible) after what all he went through. He was nearly killed in battle, framed for a crime by his own father, exiled. Of course it changed him into a more somber person. His character development surely could have been handled better, but having him stay the same as in Season 1 and cracking jokes after his own father and sister called for his head to be chopped off would have been even more idiotic.
For real, in the books Jamie told him his first marriage was for real and she wasn't a whore. Now his only mission is to hurt the Lannister name The books are so fucking good and way more detailed. Dorne is getting ready to fuck shit up in the books

As insane as joffrey was had tywin and tyrion had a real hand in raising him, he likely would have been a really good king for that time, he had his own idea that was considered a fairy tale in a national army, not relying on other warlords to hold to their oaths but a state army that would have eventually after being trained diminished all the other lords power to do much past saber rattle and hold supplies and taxes back. Not a single lord had that mindset of what was showed, why serve in the house guard when you can serve in the national army and maybe gain rank someday, why work as man-at-arms for a lord that will pay you in copper if at all.

How did it age poorly? He didn't believe them, then they came and he believed it. That's how knowledge works. In fact it aged VERY well because he is smart enough to recognize the truth when it's in his face.
