Australia has 'created its own nightmare' of energy shortages

  • Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce says Australia is “about 1,748 megawatts” away from meeting the nation’s energy needs.
Mr Joyce said if Australia wanted to fix its energy problem we would “have to change the zeitgeist”.
“We have to get away from this crazy religion that says that coal-fired power is evil and baseload power is the source of all that is wanting in the world,” he told Sky News host Paul Murray.
“We have now created our own nightmare and this frolic down the 2050 chapel aisle has now led us to the altar where we might not be able to turn the lights on in a couple of nights.”

My HS physics textbook in 1969 listed CO2 in the atmosphere at 400 PPM. In 1979, our laboratory used room air to calibrate the GC for CO2 - the value was accepted at 400 PPM. I just googled the current level of CO2 in the atmosphere, and it listed it at 416 PPM. Do people really believe that an increase of 16 PPM of a molecule in our atmosphere is going to destroy the climate? The earth is not that fragile no matter what Bill Gates, Klaus Schwab, Prince Charles and George Soros (all great scientists) have to say.

I was a Field Engineer with General Electric Co in the 70's and 1980's and worked in 17 countries doing gas turbine and steam turbine powerplant and peaking plant work. Power seemed to be more reliable in Venezuela back then than it is in Northern California now. The morons in charge of our state think that 100,000 Megawatts of base loaded turbine generators is directly equivalent to 100,000 Megawatts in windmills and solar panels because it says so on paper.
Diablo Canyon nuke plant is at the end of its design life and Units #1 and 2 will be cold iron permanently in 2024 and 2025. We lose 2200 Megawatts of base loaded reliability forever. Wind and solar are useful but without pumped storage reservoirs there aren't enough batteries on the planet to bank off peak power to use in high demand situations. Klown Snobbb says we will own nothing and be happy. That is a threat, not a promise. His hatred of fossil fuels helped put us here in dire straits.

So in short, "the green new deal" in Australia is a mess (which anyone with common sense could see) and it isn't working due to not having the infrastructure, or technologies, in place to make the shift?
    Sound about right?
The same idiocy is being perpetraited in my own country of Norway, and we are 90% selfsufficient of the cleanest power on earth which is hydropower. BUT due to idiots in charge and new active electrical cables to other countries we the people south in our country are seeing 3 to 4 times rise in prices. The politicians are trying to excuse themselves where the majority of the profits goes straight into the state itself, where the people get 15% back in socalled "support money".
I tell you what, if it was open season on politicians they all would be dead by tomorrow, that's how bad the situation is.

You don't want coal/gas/oil to provide base load power? Fine!
Option 1 Renewables backed up by an ENORMOUSLY expensive storage system.
1A batteries. The cost of batteries is NOT decreasing at anything like the rate required to see batteries as an economic solution within the next 25 years.
1B stored hydro in a land largely without reliable water AND without mountains,
1C inefficiently produced/expensive hydrogen, plus storage and a pipeline network.
By the way, hydrogen is notoriously difficult to contain in a tank or a pipe. It leaks! A lot!
Option 2 Nuclear. Hopefully Thorium/molten salt, or maybe modular plug-in units.
It is time to seriously consider nuclear! Fear of nuclear power is essentially irrational.
You cannot rely wholly on renewables for base load power. We need a phased transition plan from Fossil fuel to Nuclear to Renewables over 50 years to allow installed generating capacity to work to the end of its economic life.
We will probably end up with Option 2 (and a bit of Option 1) for base load, and Option 1 and a bit of gas (thermal or turbines) for peak load.
All I have seen is a wish list from various committed pressure groups, each with a utopian end goal in sight, but no rational, argued timeline to get there.
Australia needs a NATIONAL PLAN! Only Canberra can do that.

we are turning away from coal too quickly as renewables can and will cope with the load then coal off when we have enough capacity in renewables till then get the coal powered repaired and running back at capacity when a renewable is fully available to replace a coal powered station the start shutting down coal power

We here in Texas USA have a couple of atomic reactors pumping out power. We could give you some power if we could figure a way to get it to you! HEY, you all have plenty of uranium! Why don't you have any reactors? :)

    • @ironside210
      @ironside210 2 года назад

Oz politicians are so scared of offending the environmentally committed (EC) that they will not countenance even doing a study on nuclear power. The EC are sure that if we had, say, eight reactors (or 30 modular reactors) providing baseload power, we would all glow in the dark. Of all the countries where nuclear power is suited, AUS has to be near the top of the list. Geologically and politically stable, lots of space, population all on the seaboard, educated workforce.

How about digging a cylinder of mass? While you're digging, line the inside and outside of the ring with steel and concrete on both sides of that cylinder slot. Once you get deep enough for the amount of mass you are looking for, drill horizontal holes across the center at the bottom, feeding the cables through, back up, and connect to pullies on the other side. To keep the mass from tipping, connect all the pullies in a geared ring. Now to add power, all you have to do is lift the mass out of the ground. A simple, cheap gravitational battery. OMG! Solar and wind are the cheapest power available, ever. Put those two together and put an end to the fossil-fuel industry that poisons the environment.

Now we're paying double for gas in our fuelled cars.....I guess until we've paid for the development.....which most of us don't even really want. It's irresposible and untrustworthy and fickle....that electronic reliance....particularly with crazy climate events everywhere.....just wow, who is thinking here.....

China has 1,110 Coal Fired Power Stations (C.F.P.S.) in operation, a further 92 under construction, a further 148 in planning.
India has 285 C.F.P.S. in use, 26 under construction, 22 in planning.
Australia has 9 C.F.P.S. in use (which the Woke" in the community demand be closed), none under construction, none in planning, and we, a nation rich in power resources, have blackouts in various states. Moronic "leadership" over many years to satisfy idiots within the community have already driven most manufactiring overseas to CHINA (who use C.F.P.S.) and is now threatening the aged and poor with life threatening power cuts and costs.
