Agreed with the vocals thing, but Archspire can be "overwhelming" on the first listen, so all 5 members sound equally mental. I think it's only when you listen to them (or tech death) a lot more that you fully realise how unique/difficult those vocals are
I heard Dean(archspire rhythm guitarist) explain a vocal technique the singer guy used on a part in one of their new songs, I forget which part or song, but he said he layered 2 vocal tracks doing 2 different techniques, on one an inhaling vocal technique thing, on the other one an exhale-thing and they were mixed a certain way to give the effect heard on the record... something like that anyways, I am not a death metal singer..
7:20 Guitarist here! You're very right in that they bring out different pitches from the pinch harmonic, even from the same fret. It's dependent on where you pinch the string with your picking hand - closer to the bridge tends to result in a higher pitch, while the area just behind the neck pickup generally makes a lower, more rounded sound. Mastering them can be tough. Gojira also do this a lot - very noticeable in the verse riff of "The Gift of Guilt". Great video as always Geebz, Archspire rules ✌
@@complexdevice I assume you're talking about natural harmonics with your fretting hand? Gojira do it a lot indeed, but there's not a single one in Golden Mouth of Ruin.
One great example is in Nile's "Permitting the Noble Dead to Descent in to the Underworld". Riff starts at around 1:33, its just 2 fretted notes but changing the pinch harmonic position!
I love that you found archspire. Several times you could tell from your expressions that you were thinking how!? Just incredible musicians who deserve far more credit. Thanks for the laughs

One of my favorite things about Archspire is how important the vocalist feels. In my opinion, there’s times in metal where I could enjoy the song even if the vocalist wasn’t there. That’s not how I feel with Archspire. Their vocalist is such a key instrument in their compositions. The verses and the chorus would feel so empty without him. I recommended Human Murmuration by them. Involuntary Doppleganger is often recommended for the shock value being introduced to their speed, but now you’ve already been exposed to it.
You're spot on there. I was watching Dean's livestream once and a viewer asked if they plan to make any instrumental releases of their albums, and his answer was along the lines of no, the music wouldn't make sense instrumentally.
As a lover of ARCHSPIRE and a worshipper of Spencer Prewett’s drumming, I thank you Geebz. Same. The sound is so distinctive as well, it feels like archspire after 3 seconds, what an accomplishment to be that recognizable in a genre like death tech.
In regards to pinch harmonics: where you “pinch” with your thumb and pick in relation to the pickups will give different harmonics on the same note. In other words, if you pinch closer to the neck pickup, you’ll get a different harmonic than if you pinch in the middle of the pickups or closer to the bridge.
