I upgraded from an old JVC home camcorder to a SONY FDR-AX700 for my youtube videos. I mostly shoot in my garage shop with overhead LED lights and a couple cheap soft box lights from amazon. Really happy with this setup.
All cameras are expensive for beginners or students.. I'm film making student from India.. started from Canon 60d and ended up with sony A7S ii.. suggest cameras that students can buy n can afford lenses as well

Any thoughts on a Canon m50 for a beginning filmmaker. I'm not a Vlogger or documentary type, just focusing on shorts first. Thanks all!
M50 is a great camera but I think the SL3 (250D) is better personally.
Best advice. Write down half a dozen ideas for what you're going to do make with it. Fifty years ago I bought a clockwork Bell and Howell camera for ten quid. You bought a fifty foot of film which recorded 25 feet on one side then you reversed it and used the other 25 feet. (It was 16mm wide.) It was known as Standard 8. No modern fancy camera with umpteen facilities could give you as much fun. Its ideas that count. And editing was real. With scissors and film cement. My wife made the titles with a roll of wallpaper. THAT was real film making. The camera was second hand.
I’m interested in real more than anything
this list kinda sucks, I mean great cameras but this isn't a beginners list. I don't know a single film STUDENT who could possibly afford these. the cinema cameras were all in the 6,000s and up!
Kay Marie the GH5 is under $1.5k....you can’t buy digital cinema cameras cheaper than $6000.... they’re for professionals. You should look at true DSLR’s and Mirrorless camera’s if you’re a budding filmmaker on a Budget. But you can’t expect to get a camera under around $1.2k and have great quality. It’s clear to me that you’re someone in school and isn’t working yet so $1.2k sounds like a LOT of money, but that’s the entry level point.
@@Slesaint17 It's understandable that digital cinema cameras are expensive, and for the best quality you are going to need to shell out quite a few bucks. However, this is a list for a beginner's guide as was mentioned in the video and thus should keep that in mind when recommending cameras to absolute beginners
Spicy Ginger but cameras like the GH5 ARE for beginners...if you want to be using the cameras professionally. I honestly wouldn’t recommend anything lower in quality than the GH5 or A7iii (around that range) for any professional work as an A camera. The G85 or a6300 and stuff like that might be fine as a B-Cam, but if you’re gonna be doing professional work, it’s better to invest in a GH5 and up.
@@Slesaint17 Eh I have to respectfully disagree, while the cameras listed are definitely good for professional work, for someone just starting out that doesn't have the knowledge and repertoire to make professional videos, getting an expensive camera at that level seems like a waste. It's like getting a Porsche to practice learning stick shift driving for the first time. These cameras are something to work up to, for the broke newbie filmmaker I'd recommend something more manageable like a decent range camcorder or Nikon DSLR (I'm not an expert at cameras so I'm not going to try and list some good ones)
@@SinVex-wi1eo I agree with you ONLY if the budget camera allows you the option of full manual control. The problem with inexpensive consumer cameras is alot of them don't give you full manual control. As a student learning the operations of a camera, that is obviously necessary.
When Blackmagic adds a good build-in stabilization, better low light, and a flip screen, I'll buy it and use it as my main go-to camera.
Thanks alot guys! Really was looking for this information.
Keep up the good work..
Great video! Just what I needed, fast and informative. I am starting a new position and have been asked if I can create elearning videos for assembling a product (indoor mfg). As I see it, much like "How it's made" might be a good approach. I am working on my Masters in Instructional design so, that said, I am on a student budget, not a masters budget. I am thinking this would fall in your line of "narrative". Can you suggest an affordable start for a student who needs everything?
The Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, B&H # BL4KPKCAM, is a great Cinema Camera choice for narratives at a very affordable price. This would be a great choice.

I don't use digital cameras. I feel digital cameras make life easier in a way that doesn't make film making fun. In my opinion I shoot using vintage 8mm cameras. But there is 16mm. The best 16mm cameras I've heard of are bolex's. I myself use 2 different styles super 8 and regular 8mm. The best camera brands in my opinion would be kodak, GAF, and mansfield. They offer a good selection. The cameras I use don't require me to get the lighting right because they have light sensors that set the appature. The shutter speed is always 16 frames per sec. so I don't have to worry. I myself use the GAF SC/100 and SC/91 Wich are super 8. I use the Mansfield holiday zoom ee for zoom shots, and the kodak brownie, and automatic. Which are very nice cameras. Even tho they are vintage they are very cheap. My cameras ranged from 10 to 30 dollars. And to review footage I bought an 8mm projector for only 30 bucks. Soo why go high end for cameras that are easy. When you can have fun working with actually film instead of digital. I buy my film from the film photography project and cameras from antique stores. And I can only thank them.
I think some of the current crop of bridge cameras are a viable option. The Panasonic FZ2500 is a great camera. Even the FZ300 produces some remarkable images.
Mini Moto Revolution i agree fz2500 is so good is fact its weather sealed
I am a student and I want to make shortfilms.I cannot buy cameras of large amount. Please recommend cameras that I could buy.
If there is any best quality camera under Rs.5000 or Rs 8000
GALAXY TV HD canon sl2,m3/5/50 great cams
Actual RAW capable beginner digital cinema cameras (below $1,500) are the $995 Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera, $1,295 Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and $1,499 Z CAM E2-M4.
It is borderline unethical to make a cinema camera list for "beginners" touting RAW as an advantage - where the least expensive camera is a $3,999 C200B and the even more expensive FS7 and EVA1 need external recorders for RAW.
I’m looking to buy my first camera and this is very helpful. Thank you

Cell phone and get a job.
If you're trying to get that "cinematic" look, you're going to want an interchangeable lens camera. You're not going to get amazing results for less than a thousand dollars, but you can find a Panasonic GH1 for less than $200 on Amazon or ebay and get _acceptable_ results if you know how to work within the limitations (for a little extra, you can get a used GH2 which has manual audio gain control and slightly better video features). It can record 1080p at 24 fps, and there's a fan-made hack you can download and install for free to enable advanced video features and higher bit rates. It uses a Micro Four Thirds mount, so you can adapt practically any lens to it (with the right adapters), including some dirt-cheap CCTV lenses from Amazon or ebay, some of which cost under $30 and even come with C-mount to MFT adapters.
Alternatively, you can get a Canon EOS Rebel T2i (also known as the EOS 550D in Europe) with a 18-55mm zoom lens on Amazon for a little over $200. The video capabilities of Canon DSLRs are limited, but can be expanded using the free Magic Lantern hack, but I would recommend the Panasonic GH series cameras because they were made with video in mind, rather than just as a tacked-on feature like with Canon DSLRs, and I've personally never been impressed by the video quality from Canon's entry-level cameras. It does use the Canon EF mount, which gives you the best native lens options, but if you're only going to own one or two lenses, that's not going to matter much.
If you're okay with recording your audio to an external device, you can get a used Sony NEX-5 with a 18-55mm lens for less than $300. It doesn't have either a headphone jack or a microphone input (all of those other cameras I mentioned have microphone inputs, but no headphone jacks). It uses E-mount lenses, and like the Pansonic GH cameras, it's mirrorless so you can adapt DSLR lenses to it.
If you want something that can approach professional (or semi-professional) results, you can get a used Panasonic GH4 for about $600. It can record 4K, has a headphone jack, and a microphone input with manual gain control, along with a host of professional video features such as zebra stripes and on-screen VU meters. I'm not aware of any other interchangeable lens cameras in that price range which have such features. Just be aware that it has poor low light performance (like all Panasonic GH cameras before the GH5s), so invest in some fast lenses.
Hey what are you shooting?
Very Clever! ; )
My two young adult kids (21 & 23) dream of filmaking. I am wondering if these cameras have gone down in pricing or I should consider looking into what the new technology is out there now.

So a dslr will do everything a prosumer camcorder will plus some?
Manual focus is definitely not a drawback
A simple dslr with 1080p can shoot an entire documentary. All you need is special equipments like gimbal, monopod & tripod for that. There are also different types of rigs available.
Some filmmakers do shoot even at 1080p or old school film.
The question is "what do you want to shoot?"
Nobody wants to see your dirty documentary.

There are so many different options that would apply for this. It really is a matter of the specific features you desire in a camera, combined with what your experience level is. Hmm I personslly think that sound and story is more important that Image quality. Dont get me wrong, a good picture helps, but a Phone vidoe camera is not that bad, it can look really good, if you know what your doing and Try avoiding certain things Like grain and smoothing :)
what do you think about the black magic pocket cam for weddings and events?
not worth it...laughable battery life.
Are DSLR's (and mirrorless) still limited by recording time caps like they were a few years back? Honestly, I have found the quality of the output to surpass all but the priciest pro cinema cams for a fraction of the cost. But their penchant for shutting down every 12-15 minutes of filming made them tricky for uninterrupted live event recording or podcasting.
Most DSLR and Mirrorless cameras will have a recording time limit. However in most cases it is no 30 minutes, instead of the 12-15 minutes when they were first introduced. There are also some options with no recording time limit, like the Panasonic GH5, which can record for as long as the memory card allows.

I know it is off topic but what would you choose to shoot/film sports like lacrosse? DSLR or video camera?
Depends on what you hope to capture. If you want a highlight reel of just cool moments then a DSLR will look more cinematic because of the larger sensor size. If you want to capture the entire game then a camcorder with built-in zoom lens and quick autofocus would be more applicable. Hope this helps! Just keep shooting! - Jake
B and H Looking to film the entire game the pull clips for highlights. Sounds like a camcorder would be the best bet.
This is really well made makes sense why b and h's stuff is so expensive you pay for this kind of quality stuff sucks that as a beginner I have no money to spare
So many options that it’s dizzying and frustrating. I just want to film in 4K UHD 60fps or 5K UHD 30fps like the RUclips channels that film the Disney parks. Those videos look great on my phone, I can only imagine how they would look on a 4K UHD TV. Any ideas?

Jake, beginner here. I want to film Stringer videos. I want to be able to shoot both daylight & night-time videos of First Responders in action. Your suggestions please. Again this would be my first video camera.
Sounds like you'd fit in the "Journalism and event shooting" category, though make sure you pick one that has a 1" size sensor for better night time shooting.
Hey there, Jake with B&H! I'd recommend a prosumer camcorder that has a good zoom lens, fast autofocus and a larger sensor for low light situations. Something like a Sony NX80 or a Panasonic AG-UX90; both have 1'' sensors and fast autofocus. But regardless of which camera you go with make sure you have an on-camera LED light if you want to shoot at night. Hope this helps! Just keep shooting, Sean!
Like the simple breakdown of applications. However, many are expensive. Can you recommend a camera with excellent autofocus for run and gun but can handle theatre lights as well? SHould I be looking at camcorder or Mirrorless?

Hello, interesting video! :) I have a problem: i have a pretty old compact camera (Panasonic Lumix Lf1), and even it's a little compact camera, every setting is exactly like in every other professional camera. (You have ISO, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, etc) For photosy it works perfectly, but when I start recording video, it seems like every setting goes back to "auto". The focus, the aperture and the shutter speed I've just made don't apply to the video! But even my smartphone can do that... Can you help me? Thanks :)
Unfortunately, I do not think so. According to page 40 of the _Operating Instructions for Advanced Features for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LF1,_ the *[M]* Manual Recording mode should be compatible for use when recording motion pictures. Unfortunately, for your usage needs, on page 94 under the *"Recording motion pictures in [M]"* section, it states that _"Aperture and shutter speed are automatically set"_ when using the *[M]* mode setting, so it does not seem like you can set your own aperture or shutter speed setting when recording video, but you should still be able to set the camera's ISO setting. If you are a beginning filmmaker, I doubt you want to spend 10 grand on a camera...
please tell me which one i should get
Buying a "beginner video camera" for 3000-8000$ definitely is a good idea
Soooo what about music videos? I'm assuming the recommendation would be the cinema cameras which look way out of my budget. Can't I use a mirrorless to start out with? I don't think it would come out that bad especially if I'm just starting out.
Mirrorless could work for music videos.
Also consider these prosumer camcorders

Hi Shannon S - If you are looking for a good mirrorless camera for music videos, then give the Panasonic LUMIX G7 a look. It shoots great 4K video.
Very nice video.
Panasonic Ag Dvx200 its not for beginners, i think\
camcorder
class lecture recording
for youtube ?/??
where can I find that tripod on 1:51 ?
lol just got to 2:20
Something tells me you mislabled the video. Cause who is buying a camera for a learner that costs several thousand dollars? Unless I am looking in the wrong places.
Just get any old cheap camera and start making movies.
I think Quentin Tarantino put it best, "You don't have to know how to make a movie. If you truly love cinema with all your heart and with enough passion, you can't help but make a good movie. You don't need to go to school. You don't have to know a lens: a 40 and a 50. Fuck all that shit. 'Crossing the line.' None of that shit's important. If you just truly love cinema with enough passion and you *really* love it, then you can't help but make a good movie."
i would like to know how to shoot a movie with a video camera

...or use a high quality phone camera.
What beginners who don't have thousands of dollars to spend? What if you have only, say $500 and want to get started doing something, instead of just talking about it?
Consider starting with something like this. The camera is only a tool that helps you tell your story. Start small and dream big - good luck James!
Sony HDR-CX455 Full HD Handycam Camcorder with 8GB Internal Memory

@@BandH Thanks for the reply!

Hi, great video, quite informative and concise (under 5min).
Could you/anyone recommend me a camera which is an All-rounder and i can Grow with for a while. Being a beginner Filmmaker i am not quite sure which to favour either Photos or Videos as both of them are important for my craft/interests hence an All-Rounder camera (will also be good starting point & learning curve).
As a beginner my budget is limited. However, if you could suggest me Best All-rounder cameras under $500, $1000 & $1500 and the respective Kit to go with, it would be a great reference point and really helpful.
I have done my own research but your opinion on this would be of great value.
Thank you.
Note: I really appreciate you responding to the Comments even after having so many Subs (681K) and will still do even If you don't respond to mine.
All the best
Keep going.

The Sony A6400 would be a great option for an All-Around Camera to use for both Photo and Video. It has a 24.2MP sensor and can record video at UHD 4K resolutions. It will be easy to start off with thanks to its very reliable Video AF and you can grow with it as you add new lenses.

@@BandH Thank you so much.
I would be really grateful if you could clarify one more thing for me.
As I also had Panasonic GH4 in mind (cheaper, i guess), could you tell why Sony A6400 is better (or vice versa) than Panasonic GH4 except for low light shooting?
As both of them are similar in many ways and approach the Professional realm, Right?
You have my Thanks for such a prompt response. Kindly let men know about these questions too.
