Small external leaks on this engine, are a big pain. I have heard of people always having small leaks on these heads. They remove, new gasket, leaks again. They had block and head decked, still small external leaks. I would use gm coolant tablets, on small external leaks to seal up head and call it good. I never hear of people having no leaks out of these heads. Even guys that use the aluminum head same thing...After some years, these will start to leak. Very crazy...

Great idea (I think) to use stainless arp bolts on thermostat housing... Water pump bolts too I suppose. I hope I put on some thread sealer on mine.

    I know it's been awhile.
I've tried 3 times to seal mine up. Block decked head surfaced.
It still leaks. Was a known issue from original.
    Did yours seal up?

This head has been milled too much and wouldn’t hold true. That was the real issue.
I did get it to seal using copper coat but that’s not the right solution.

@@mechtrician1 wish I had known about copper coat.
Everything I read said don't put anything on the gasket.
I'm going to live with it for now. It's very minor, just disappointing.
      Thanks for your reply

I heard from a few old motor heads, that with the cast iron heads they don't warp or need milled. The fear in over heating with these isn't like it is with aluminum heads, not saying it doesn't happen, it's just not very likely. Also I worked fir SRC outta Springfield Missouri, they have contracts with GM among others for rebuilding engines. They also make 383 strokers, had many private customers bring heads in and never had to resurface a iron head.

That’s not been my experience. They do change over time with heat cycles. You have to mill these heads specifically anyway though. The original shim head gaskets are about .015 and not made anymore. New ones are .050 so you have to mill them to keep the compression up.

My headgasket leaked in the same spot, along the driver side around 4 different areas. I replaced the gasket and it leaked a little less. I removed the head again, sent it out to get checked and resurfaced, replaced the gasket, torqued it down and it leaked a little less again but still leaks....ugh. Anyways what was the name of the copper coat you used? Also did this cause any starting issues? My car also has an issue were it starts funny like the timing is off but its not😭.

We you able to get the head on using the stud kit while the hood was still attached to the car?

Where are you sourcing the adjustable rockers? I need a few for my 144 and can't find them anywhere.

Actually things have changed that will be in part 2 but after a bunch of research and talking to my machinist, I’m staying with non-adjustable rockers. Vintage inlines has stock adjustable rockers though. Also eBay has them.

I am attempting to find the ARP thermostat housing bolts you show. Will you let me know ARP's stock number for the two bolts, please? Thx

I have no idea anymore. I just measured what length I needed and ordered them by the specs I needed.

If you'll go to their online catalog, you'll find bolts of every size they make, in every material they make them. take measurements from your old ones, compare, and Bob's your uncle.
      Best of luck to you.
