Finasteride killed my Beard | The effect of DHT on body hair fully explained

  • I have personal experience with Finasteride and beard growth.
    During the first lockdown more than a year ago, I stopped using Finasteride and started to grow my beard. Well I have kept a grown beard before I was initiated on Finasteride, but I never noticed such a lush beard than during the lockdown when I stopped using Finasteride. My hairfall increased but the beard grew out thick, lush and very nicely due to the effect of DHT once Finastreide was stopped.
    In my practice I have noticed that the beard responds differently to Finasteride. But the majority cannot tell the difference. Perhaps the vast majority like to have the clean shaven look. If one shaves facial hair, one may not be able to know the difference though and hence not much clinical experience exists linking Finasteride with beard growth.
    Therefore, most reports of stunted beard growth after starting Finasteride are thought to be anecdotal.
    But since I practice in the Punjab where most people like sporting a beard, I have over the years gathered some interesting data since most of my patients also take Finasteride.

    I agree to this doctor. If you remember you advised me to start finasteride back in Oct'20. Ever since then I do see a slower growth compared to pre finasteride stage. What I used to grow in 15 days, probably takes 30 days now . And also since I started finasteride at such a early age(22) , I do think I still have room for much more beard growth which is why I have started Applying minoxidil on the beard area and it's been 1.5 months(started the minoxidil after the Hair Transplant) and I can see vellus hairs growing.Of course I donot plan to stop Finasteride ever , for me a head full of hair is more imp. But I have 2 questions-
    1) Have you heard of the minox beard spot?(it's a facebook group created way back for people who wish to grow beard by applying minoxidil on the beard area) and do you think it actually works?
    2)There are a lot of beard products/balm/cream etc that have DHT inhibitors to support beard growth. Do you think these products really work and is it counter intuitive to use the topical beard products which have the dht inhibitors?

    • @hairtransplantinindia
      @hairtransplantinindia  3 года назад +7

      Minoxidil will not grow new hairs ever. Products that use DHT blockers for beard are too many but this is misinformation since beard thrives in high DHT environments.

    • @hairtransplantinindia
      @hairtransplantinindia  3 года назад +5

      I never heard of this group but beard has a role in beard hair growth to give thickness. It will not grow new hairs. Many bear lotions balms contain a DHT blocker since its a fad and companies for monetary gain play up on your fears through misinformation. The truth is beards thrive in high DHT environments.

    • @gameranonymous35
      @gameranonymous35 3 года назад

      Right doctor.Minoxidil will not grow new hairs but what I meant was since minoxidil is a vasodilator do you think the beard hairs get more support because of it and grow faster/better because of the use of minoxidil in the beard area? It might be complete placebo but ever since I started the minoxidil for the beard , I have seen a couple of few tiny vellus hairs growing in an area which was almost a 'No man's land'😂😂 .
      Also regarding the beard balm/cream. I guess I put it in the wrong way. There a lot of product in the market today that claim they have DHT component in it which will grow your beard hair thicker and faster. Do you think such DHT component can actually be put on a beard cream and will it work?

    • @hairtransplantinindia
      @hairtransplantinindia  3 года назад +5

      @@gameranonymous35 Minoxidil is no placebo. Yes it has a salubrious effect on beard growth within limitations. I only heard of beard growth products having anti-DHT properties. I do not think DHT can be placed inside of beard products.

    Great topic. One thing came that came to mind while watching this Dr Bhatti was an evolutionary model on the discrepancy between beard and hair growth and DHT. I could imagine that in terms of adaptation the survival of the fittest thousands of years ago that certain biological traits in men would be more desirable in terms of survival. Facial hair for the protection of the face in fighting, etc. Body hair remnants from other homo species of the past for body warmth, etc. Also a receding hairline would also be of admiral benefit in terms of being perceived and valued as an elder or higher member of a social homo sapien social class group. Interestingly, a study was carried out only a couple of years ago and bald men were viewed by women with having associated traits such as being leaders and other positive attributes that match an evolutionary model. We cannot escape our genetics but we certainly can learn from our evolutionary past. Thanks for sharing!

    I have been applying minoxidil on my beard for over a year. After about 3 months, I grew a full beard from a patchy one. About 11 months into using the minox on my beard I started finasteride because I noticed my temples were slightly thinner (start of MPB I believe) and it has been over 2 months since I started the finasteride. My beard HAS thinned slightly and does also grow slower. Before my beard would grow very quickly and very full in the cheek area. Now I have areas on my beard which are thinner and when I go in bright lighting (gym lighting in specific) you can definitely tell the difference. Just my experience. I would still rather have great head hair and a slighty thinner beard then a great full beard and thinning head hair. A trade off I guess. I’m still
    Using the minox on my beard twice a day like I was before the finasteride by the way and have not stopped at all.

Since I already have a decently grown beard, my concern is whether dutasteride might affect the thickness and texture of my beard, considering you mentioned that DHT only influences linear beard growth, and not density, and that you can't blame your patchy beard on DHT. So, would being on dutasteride reduce my beard's thickness? Or would it only affect the linear growth of the beard? Thank you sir.

    I can fully attest to this side effect. Prior to starting finasteride, I was 41 years old and had a thick beard. I am now two years into my finasteride journey, and my once thick beard is a shadow of it's former self. It has become thin and wispy. I suppose I always took for granted that I had a thick beard, ever since I was in my late 16 or 17 years old. Many of my friends and even family members were jealous of it, but that unfortunately is no longer the case. Additionally, my body hair has also been significantly reduced. What can I do (if anything) to reverse this unwanted side-effect while taking finasteride?

I haven't sported a beard in 4 years ago (because of military service), but when I did, it was much fuller and less patchy than it is now (after 8 months of 1mg oral Finasteride daily). I suppose it may be taking longer to reach equivalent growth and thus presenting patchier in its current state, but I'm not certain that's the case.

    I am 26 years old boy, i had minor hair fall which was making me sad and depressed, i took 5 mg Finasteride twice a day, obviously it is 10 times higher dose than recommend, i took that with Dutasteride for 1.5 years, what i got side effects were weight gain, swelling, digestive issues, watery semen although i have erection and normal sexual function,
    Later when i got horrible side effects i decided to take break and after 3 years of stopping that medicine i went to laboratory for various test.
    I was shocked my testosterone level reduced as it was 650 prior to taking medicine,. But now it is 508, and Estradiol is 33. Few doctors said me i have altered testosterone to Estradiol ratio, sir tell me what is your comments on testosterone to Estradiol value of my case?
