I like that small pause of shock/interest Thrawn has when he realizes who trained Ahsoka. He realized that his opponent is more dangerous than he anticipated.
Yup, Thrawn knows better than to go after Ahsoka. Him and Anakin worked great together, even when Thrawn knew Vader was Anakin when they were on mission together looking for "Sky Walkers". He knows Ahsoka was well-trained and that Anakin was very thorough with Ahsoka.
Mostly, Thrawn doesn't want to risk taking on Ahsoka and Ezra directly. It'd be an unnecessary battle. He's been defeated by Ezra once before, and he knows how dangerous Ahsoka could be. That's why he's just buying time, hoping to win by simply stranding them. It's the most efficient and risk-averse strategy. He learned from his overconfidence at Lothal.

Admiral Thrawn is such an intelligent military leader. The way he speaks, thinks, and makes decisions, I admire him for that. He is very analytical and surgical with his plans. Amazing.
Except, he and Anakin had never spoken about her during their encounter in the Clone Wars; and in the Galactic Empire, Thrawn chose to respect Vader's privacy, so he did not dig into Anakin's past.
I mean Anakin mention Ahsoka in Ascendancy, I think, when he is with Thrawn. . .well Actually Padme mention Her, but understanding that in that moment Thrawn Wasn't to good in Basic (lenguage in Star Wars), and it was only a casual phrase, I don't think he took that with very much importance
@@ManOfX305 well that solve the case, Thrawn didn't know Ahsoka, except for that mention, that Actually Anakin and Padme said in Basic. . .or at least that's my resolution
Thrawn already knew of Ahsoka from canon book Alliances. Padme said, "Anakin's apprentice invented this tactic. It worked against the droids Ahsoka was fighting."
Even someone with an eidetic memory wouldn’t remember a single passing reference from 30 years ago to someone they never met. At best, he’d recognize her name, but be unable to place it; until he finally put it together when looking at her file. Memory is a fundamentally lossy process. The brain slowly and stochastically prunes long-term memories that are never consciously recalled; and the memories that _are_ consciously recalled are actively overwritten with each successive playback.
@@angelrivera2339 By playing it safe, setting up decoy targets, or even sacrificing real assets while being laser-focused on the main objective. Here, Thrawn's goal was to go back home, so he chose to strand Ahsoka & co. instead of trying his best to kill her. Morgan's job was to delay her, and if she killed Ahsoka, great. If she got killed Thrawn's mission would still be a success.
I like that Thrawn took a moment to reflect on Anakin. I think that, in a sense, Thrawn was Anakin’s opposite. Had Thrawn been assigned to Vader, oh damn… the Rebel Alliance would’ve defeated.
No he’s known, in the canon book he and skywalker team up during clone wars. Then when they’re teaming up as Imps he “teases” Vader by bringing Anakin up constantly and “accidentally” saying “we’ve been here before” he figures it out by his tactics and his reactions to the name Anakin Skywalker. Again, it’s already canon
Thrawn's strategic decisions after learning this can be viewed through a somewhat comedic lens: he 200% does not want to deal with Skywalker Bullshit, be it inherent or learned. Just one problem though: he escaped from one enemy who practices Learned Skywalker Bullshit into the stomping grounds of not one but two with Inherent capacity for Skywalker Bullshit.
I love how they respect the jedi enough to address them by their GAR ranks. To a stormtrooper a jedi is a wizard, but a general that is a rank and title they respect and never would have though they would have given them the curtesy of regarding them as soldiers.
When Thrawn said “you’re certain there was only the one star ship” was he implying that Luke might have joined Ashoka in her quest? Considering this is right after he finds out that Anakin (Vader) was her master, who else would he be referring to other than his son who was pivotal in the fall of the Empire.
@@Taylor_Costa I’m inclined to believe that he’s not completely cut off from knowing the events that transpired in the base galaxy. When I heard him say “you’re certain there was only one star ship” my mind instantly went to the mandalorian finale where Luke shows up and Cara Dune says “Only one X-wing? Great.” Had similar vibes I guess. Would make sense for Thrawn to be terrified of Luke.
If Thrawn doesn't know about Luke yet, he will. I'm very interested to see how Thrawn handles that revelation, especially since he's the one holding all the cards, information-wise
@@ebzdawka5619 That's accurate. We do know that Thrawn was communicating from the other galaxy with the SW one. Morgan built the Eye to bring the Chimaera back and Pellaeon says to Moff Gideon that they need to keep their presence on the down low until Thrawn's return. Both suggest that Thrawn and his allies have a way of communicating with each other long distance. My headcanon is that the Chiss Ascendancy was in uproar and concerned over Thrawn's disappearance. Perhaps with Eli and Ar'alani's help, the Chiss were the ones to track his path, eventually establishing long-range communication with the lost ship. And they relayed that to Thrawn's allies in the Empire. Remember the Chiss still need the Empire to fight the War with the Grysk/Yuuzhan Vong, even though they don't fully trust them.
Honestly SW has had some ups and downs but bringing Thrawn to the big screen was amazing, it’s safe to say that he is the Shockwave, of the series and the biggest tie breaker, tactical advantage of the Star Wars Universe
Considering the inquisitors success rate when it came to Ahsoka after she handed Thrawn the pad i expected him to say 'why does it just say "let vader handle it?"'
If I'm remembering correctly, Thrawn doesn't show up in Rebels until Season 3. Given her (apparent) death at the end of Season 2, why would he research her?
Ahsoka was only in Season 2 and then vanished after her duel with Vader. Thrawn got introduced in Season 3 when Ahsoka was believed dead and not a part of the the Lothal-rebel-cell anymore. He never had to fight her.
i love the realization on his face, i only sorta rememeber some of the book stuff, but i think its said or HEAVILY hinted at Thrawn knowing Vader's true identity so him realizing she's his former padawan just has him instantly shift gears, cause he delt with both vader and anakin, he must prepare for a jedi with an extremely unpredictable nature

For those who don't know, Thrawn actually knows Anakin quite well because Anakin used to be Thrawn's paper boy just before the clone wars started.
thrawn was on tatooine?
@@reptile1687probably when Anakin was still training to be a Jedi most likely

Thrawn's voice is exactly how I pictured it in my head.
Played by the same Actor who did the voice in Star wars Rebels.
Absolutely love his reaction and ability to quickly adjust his strategy
Admiral Thrawn is such an intelligent military leader. The way he speaks, thinks, and makes decisions, I admire him for that. He is very analytical and surgical with his plans. Amazing.
-Her master was general Anakin Skywalker?
-Yes
-Oh
Whether he was Vader or Anakin, both names commanded respect and fear from allies/enemies alike.
Thrawn realizing his advisory was his old colleague's apprentice
Great episode but you would think thrawn would have known about Ashoka being anakins apprentice earlier on
Except, he and Anakin had never spoken about her during their encounter in the Clone Wars; and in the Galactic Empire, Thrawn chose to respect Vader's privacy, so he did not dig into Anakin's past.
He didn't like to pry
I mean Anakin mention Ahsoka in Ascendancy, I think, when he is with Thrawn. . .well Actually Padme mention Her, but understanding that in that moment Thrawn Wasn't to good in Basic (lenguage in Star Wars), and it was only a casual phrase, I don't think he took that with very much importance
@@guzm9120 Thrawn had actually not known basic at all, at that point.
@@ManOfX305 well that solve the case, Thrawn didn't know Ahsoka, except for that mention, that Actually Anakin and Padme said in Basic. . .or at least that's my resolution
Thrawn finding out Ashoka was Anakin's student.
Was like the dude finding out they just killed John wicks Dog.
"Oh."
“General Anakin Skywalker”
Game recognize game
Thrawn already knew of Ahsoka from canon book Alliances.
Padme said, "Anakin's apprentice invented this tactic. It worked against the droids Ahsoka was fighting."
Which means he already has an insight as to how she fights, because he's used that maneuver several times
“Are you SHITTING me. Of ALL the Jedi who survived Order 66, why, JUST WHY, did it have to be one trained by HIM?!”
Is it just me or do I detect a small hint of fear in thrawn when he finds out Anakin was ashoka's master
Felt the same. You can see it in his eyes.
I'm not sure if I'd call it "fear" or "trepidation", but it was 100% theee!
"Jedi are very good at hiding, they've been practicing it for years."

Thrawn: I'm so dead if one of them would see me 💀💀
I LOVE the actor's portrayal of Thrawn. He had the exact Cadence that matches the calm calculated mind of his
Thrawn knows that Anakin was a force to be reckoned with, he knows Skywalker would have beaten him, and knows Tano would do the same.
Skywalker would have had a serious chance of beating him if he didn't plan around his unpredictability
@@MCSPARTAN501 How do you plan on what you can't predict?
@@angelrivera2339 By playing it safe, setting up decoy targets, or even sacrificing real assets while being laser-focused on the main objective. Here, Thrawn's goal was to go back home, so he chose to strand Ahsoka & co. instead of trying his best to kill her. Morgan's job was to delay her, and if she killed Ahsoka, great. If she got killed Thrawn's mission would still be a success.
I’ve waited for this scene! His reaction was worth it!
Grand Admiral Thrawn is beyond amazing, a true and great military leader
I like that Thrawn took a moment to reflect on Anakin. I think that, in a sense, Thrawn was Anakin’s opposite. Had Thrawn been assigned to Vader, oh damn… the Rebel Alliance would’ve defeated.
Actually... I highly recommend the book "Thrawn: Alliances" by Timothy Zahn
Who to be more afraid of... the half trained son of anakin skywalker, or the fully trained apprentice to skywalker?

Thrawn and captain enoch could be a LETHAL villainous duo for a movie
Dang, the actor they got for Thrawn, does his voice from Rebels perfectly.
It's literally the voice actor lol
“There is no negotiation with the apprentice of Anakin Skywalker” dude is scared of Anakin to the heart
As he should be. He worked with Anakin for a minute, so he knows.
It feels so good to hear thrawns voice again after so long
When dealing with a Skywalker, expect the unexpected... and plan accordingly.
Thrawn knew that anakin became vader, so it explains why he wanted to be careful about this.
If you’ve read the canon thrawn books, those two have indeed met.
Such good acting, cautious, patience, tactical al in a couple of frames.
Now, thrawn realize that Anakin is Darth Vader all along.
Such a perfect voice for thrawn
It's not like its the same actor as Rebels.
He referring to the rebel forces, he's gone of the Galaxy before Luke starts training with obiwan
@@ebzdawka5619
I mean, I would also be scared of the guy who's father was Darth Vader (specially since Thrawn knows who Vader truly was)
If Thrawn doesn't know about Luke yet, he will.
Thrawn: Well...normal plans have now officially gone out the window.
Now here's Filoni's chance to properly integrate the Thrawn novels.
Thrawn: "her master was...Anakin Skywalker?"
assistant: "Yes..."
Thrawn: "O HAIL nah. Ain't nobody got time fo dat..."
Honestly SW has had some ups and downs but bringing Thrawn to the big screen was amazing, it’s safe to say that he is the Shockwave, of the series and the biggest tie breaker, tactical advantage of the Star Wars Universe
anakins way of training was brutal and it made ahsoka survive order 66
It's incredible that Anakin and Darth Vader are still remembered to this day. Yet separate from each other
“Oh no, she has Plot armor, we must tread more carefully.”
Considering the inquisitors success rate when it came to Ahsoka after she handed Thrawn the pad i expected him to say 'why does it just say "let vader handle it?"'
😂 I mean...it might!
One of the best "Ah Sh!t" moments in Disney history.
I feel like he would already have researched this in Rebels.
Yes that makes sense. It's been a while since I watched it.
Thrawn: oooohhh….. OOHH.
0:12 I wonder if Marrek gave that data to Morgan.
I mean marrok was the most competent inquisitor so far so he's probably the only one who would be competent enough to get that data
i love the realization on his face, i only sorta rememeber some of the book stuff, but i think its said or HEAVILY hinted at Thrawn knowing Vader's true identity
so him realizing she's his former padawan just has him instantly shift gears, cause he delt with both vader and anakin, he must prepare for a jedi with an extremely unpredictable nature
"Jedi are very good at hiding. They've been practicing that for years."
Did he just make a genocide joke?
The Jedi aren't a race. So Order 66 was not genocide.

Thrawn has been the best villain in the Disney era so far.
He's pretty good, but I'm struggling with the idea of Thrawn allowing himself to get that out of shape. It doesn't fit him.
