"The worst singer in the world!". That's what Brenda Lee called songwriter Shel Silverstein. Silverstein was a talented man who drew cartoons for Playboy, wrote hit songs like "Syvia's Mother" for Dr Hook. He also wrote childrens books and did many other things. Unfortunately, he insisted on singing himself on the demos that he submitted to artists. I don't know about this specific song, but Brenda said that she often had to let Owen Bradley decode a Silverstein demo and play it on piano . Only then could she could tell if she liked the song.
@@soylentgreen9314 For more on Mathews, see www.dl-sites.com/vince.htm . Brenda, I think, rejected some Silverstein songs like "One's on the way" as not in her image. Later regretted it.
Brenda Lee has been iy idol since I was 13 years old. I HAD THE PLEASURE of meeting her a few years ago when she worked for my brother David KING in one of his shows. Brenda is a delight to speak with and my true superstar.
Brenda,, people love you where ever you go because you are so sweet and kind, a wonderful woman! Also no one emotes a song like you, runner ups,Patsy Kline, Judith Durham, Linda Ronstadt. Rarified company indeed! God Bless and Good night.your friend Bill.
I love them both. Craddock is also an international star and was quite a heartthrob in Australia in the late 50s and early 60s. Though he is 5 years older than Brenda, he made his first record a year after she did. Both of them have been married to their original spouses (I think Craddock married in the late 60s) and both are still performing in concert.
With her upbeat personality, you would never guess that we almost lost her about 5 months before this taping. In April 1974, Brenda went to the hospital with a severe pain in her leg. Turned out to be a life-threatening blood clot. Drugs didn't work, so the doctors decided on an emergency operation. It saved her life.
"Big Four Poster Bed" is nearly 4 minutes long. Unusual for a single release. Producer Owen Bradley asked songwriter Shel Silverstein if they could shorten it. I assume that meant they would cut one verse. Silverstein denied them permission to do so. It was either the whole song or he would not release it to Bradley. Brenda, though, liked the song so much that Owen went along with the long version and struck gold. Good decision!
I searched for years to find Brenda Lee's recording of "RUSTY BELLS" and finally found ot here on YT. It took me back very many years. Thank you for uploading it.
So just how good is Brenda's Japanese? Well, around 1980, she was hired at a handsome fee (about $12,000) to sing the Japanese National Anthem at a sporting event. Imagine the controversy if, in most countries, a non-citizen was to sing a National Anthem at a big event. But she sounded so much like a native speaker that no one there gave it a second thought. You are probably thinking of "Broken Trust" which was later in 1980.
@@MostlyBrenda no its this song I will have to look up the credits
Mickey Rooney was also a small man. But who asked him about that? Doesn't matter. She has a big voice.
