Clint. Gets. It. Make the cars harder to drive plain and simple!
And visit new places till the numbers fall then move on to another for a few years.
And faster!
they were saying that in the 90s...
@@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT So basically what the Gen 6 was until they started messing with it.
Bring back the damn 2013 package.
@@mitchell-wallisforce7859 2013, 2014, and 2016 packages were awesome
The Cup cars are supposed to be the hardest cars to drive. Right now they're the easiest ones to drive between the 3 series.
They’re also too slow. Ty Gibb’s arca car was running the same lap times as cup cars at Charlotte
@@texanfan200 I think if they limit them to 750, low downforce, and raise the roof and roll bars for safety, that will get the racing back to being slightly less aero dependent. The more drag you put on the cars in a corner should help the racing. You want the smaller spoiler on the straightaway to allow extra speed to pass. I like the rear diffusers because they should get rid of some dirty air behind the lead car.
Too much downforce not enough power .
Can you have speed limits and call it racing.
_Make the cars harder to drive_
Clint pretty much just said what the masses of the fan base wants
NO, what the fan base wants is the old points system where the number of races you won and the order of finish you got when you didn't win! The current idiotic points system allows a guy who has not won a race but somehow finishes high enough in a race to get into the final four to win the championship while Kevin Harvick who won 11 races last year wasn't even qualified to race for the championship after an unlucky race where he was taken out by some Moron!
@@ronmartin3755 can't the fan base want both? I know I do
@@ToumapassarZEZOCA me too.
That is why I love the low downforce package. Makes the cars slow down over a longer distance and makes the driver have to wrestle the car in the turns.
@@ronmartin3755 the current fanbase wants 12 wide racing every lap, multiple pileups a race, minimum of 36 road courses a year, PLUS don’t forget Hendrick 1-2-3 finishes every week. Right now they have pretty much all of that so the fans are happy and not crying like last year.
Two things I don't wanna hear starting in 2022:
550hp and high downforce. It's been rumors that they trying to run 650hp everywhere and tbh I'll be fine with that. Just don't run high downforce anywhere besides Daytona and Talladega. And one thing that bowyer mentions that I strongly agree with is the cars being slammed to the ground has made them easier to drive and hurt the racing. Get the cars up off the ground, give these cars some more horsepower (like I said 650hp would be the sweet spot because it'll satisfy the manufacturers and the fans) run low downforce and bring a soft tire to these tracks so we can actually see falloff over a run. More falloff means you'll see comers and goers. It's not rocket science but Steve o'Donnell and the other executives act like it is. They claim that these are the best drivers in the world but yet they got them driving cars that's super easy to drive. The cup series cars should be the hardest cars to drive. Period.
700 - 750 HP, low downforce every track to save money, and raise the roof a little for safety and move the roll bars further from the drivers too.
I agree, something has to change
Can it be called racing with speed limits.
That “dually fender” reference had me dead😂😂😂
I spit coffee thru my nose on that one. Went out and made sure I wasn't missing a fender haha.
@@tobydog247So did I, Clint is a funny man!
Clint Bowyer! National Treasure of FUN! in NASCAR and LIFE! LOL!
Dale Jr and Clint Bowyer should be doing this show every week
Sort of like a state of the sport
Love hearing Jr and Clint talk. So interesting and both are so knowledgeable about the driving and now the broadcast side. Would love to have more with these two.
Agreed. We need a Clint and Dale show.
I think most fans will like this
80s looked so good seeing em sling those beasts around 💯 even early to mid 90s were really good
@@KCS4LifeOFFICIAL even the 2000s and the last year's of the cot had good racing like Jeff vs jimmie Atlanta and that year I forgot the exact year but the one when Carl Edwards beat Johnson to the line Carl was sliding trying to get to jimmie
Most casual fans want close racing though, harder to drive doesn't mean close racing typically. There were some classics but there was also a lot of snoozers in the '80s and mid-2000s.
Yeah all 5 of them.
"Make the cars harder to drive"
NASCAR : *yEaH* *wE* *dOnT* *dO* *tHaT* *hErE*
Bowyer is so right! The problem is NASCAR believes that if the cars aren't sealed off to the track, they would be less likely to catch air and roll over in the course of a spin. If the cars had no splitter and had a taller ride height, that alone would make the racing better. Not to mention 550 horsepower is an embarrassment. Give em all the power the engine builders can make, and make the drivers have to manage tires. Last point, I hate the fact that the teams essentially know exactly what kind of fuel mileage they can achieve.
Amen
That’s just today’s technology, if we were capable of it back then they would of had it.
@@LAKERZP01 I understand that, and I'm not one to object NASCAR using the technology that's available. I just don't like that teams can use the throttle trace of other teams during live races. Actually, I don't like the fact that they can use most of the live data during the race.
Get the cars up off the ground and back running off the suspension, then you'll see who can drive. Running bottomed out and depending on aero is basically just racing go-karts with bodies.
All in the name of corner speed my man. They figured out how to get around ride hight. Soft springs and really stiff sway bars. Bottom out the springs and ride the sway bar like a torsion bar. Raising the cars won't solve the problem because the engineers have figured out how to get around it.. lifting the center of the splitter and letting air pass underneath might help
@@darrellwhite3261 Make sure the front splitter hits the pavement an inch before the car touches a bump stop or hits coil bind and it will take it out of the equation for the most part. Lifting the center of the splitter will also help a ton....good thing about that route is it will also help a little with the trailing car as well.
@@darrellwhite3261 nah just ban what the teams can do. Sure they can work around it unless u ban everything possible in making it happen which nascar easily can do and force them to use mechanical grip instead.
@@darrellwhite3261 Increasing corner speed and decreasing straightaway speed is why they have crappy racing.
And if you raise the minimum frame height to about 4 1/2", like it used to be when I was a crew member, you'll get air under the car. And they dictate shock rates now so they could just as easily dictate spring rates.
They also need to go back to stock configuration bodies and get rid of the slab sides.
Make a race car from a actual factory car. No splitter of spoiler.
Bowyer: “You’ve been hurt before, you know that better than anyone else.”
Dale Jr: :|
Hahahahahahaha best comment
Awkward…
I could not agree more! I miss the days when the drivers were having to wrestle the cars around. You know, sawing the wheel and playing with the gas pedal to get the car through the corners. Any time you see the drivers working hard to get the car around the track, seeing those racing gloves move side to side in the cockpit, it's a treat to watch.
It's not as exciting when the drivers are just going around, barely lifting and just "point and shooting" the car. If I wanted to watch the cars stay planted and not change speed, I'll just go watch the merry-go-round at my local theme park.
On the topic of NASCAR's return to Nashville being a success, as Clint says, why not go to Gateway? Or Road Atlanta? Or maybe even PPIR?
@@sota_59 no they're not. Road America.
@@sota_59 oh boy, whos gonna tell him
I think he should drive the new gen car. What makes Martin Brundle so good when he does F1 commentary. Is he actually test these current cars and gets a feel of them. That way he has some knowledge of those cars. I think NASCAR should allow that
This is the absolute best podcast I have listened too. Love the stories.
One rule change would bring back racing - Do away with the mandatory spoiler angle. Let the teams set it wherever they want.
Andy Petree has entered the chat 😂
That would not be safe though. If you lower that spoiler too much the cars will be hard to control in traffic. They will have to spend a ton of money to find mechanical grip and what downforce they can.
@@ethanweeter2732 They raced cars for decades before Nascar mandated a minimum spoiler angle.
@@ncjay08 Yeah, and quite a few drivers died in those decades.
@@Noonecanknow879 the last driver death was literally 20 years ago before safer barriers existed and during a time when cars were significantly less safe. Be honest here, do you think the drivers were dying because they had bad spoiler angle or because they were essentially driving metal cans on wheels into concrete barriers at 170+ mph?
Dale Jr you need to colaborate with Boyer on this next phase of NASCAR. Love how you tell & show the old tracks & their history. Let Boyer find and tell, how to find and bring the “New” Old tracks and venues to NASCAR.
YES!
YES!
YES!
THANK YOU CLINT!
Clint & Jr need to go to the old tracks. Get their ideas on the tracks to bring back. They are so much smarter than they look...😆 Love them both
I've been saying that for years. They give them great aero and suspension to make them faster, then they complain that they need to slow them down so they give them a restrictor plate. Makes no sense to me. I think the corporate money is ruining everything. Way back in the beginning corp. money helped guys race. Now a days corp. money tells them how to race. I'm sorry but big corporations don't know what the fans or racers want to see. They just want to sell their products. Same in NHRA drag racing. The racers don't run the sport. The corp. money does.
One of the best shows.
Clint you spoke for everyone !
Damn I'd like to have a few beers with Clint. Dude just seems fun to be around.
Count me in. Always enjoyed following Clint. He was my #1 driver and hated to see him go, but like hearing him in the FOX booth.
I agree with Clint. Make the cars harder to drive or more challenging & it will bring back an excitement of watching the races, which IMO, has been lacking for years. Put the driving back in the hands of the driver. Bring back the slingshot, the spinning out when alone b/c the driver is right on the ragged edge. The cars & drivers have the safety equipment now to protect themselves. Let’s not stop improving on the safety but put the 2-3” lip/ spoiler from the 70’s back on the cars, remove the side skirts & that ground hugging front splitter. If I have my way the 1976-1979 models would be what we’d see on the track today which ill never happen but I can dream right? I can only hope that the execs will, someday, bring that era (76-79) to iRacing. Cheers
Less aero grip
More mechanical grip
Less aero dependent
Makes the car harder to drive but not too hard that you cant race someone.
And make the cars go faster
Make them use factory engines and bodies.
@@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT definitely. I don't think we'll ever get back to 900hp because of the new engine, IndyCar is only 688 with its engine. But agreed, this 550 stuff isn't it.
@@jakobbuckles4472 I just wanna see Cup cars go fast again with no restricted engines, that’s all
@@ScooterLee-ei1ep lets not go down the road of German DTM they all went to 4 bangers and it died a few years later. Nascar should never abandon the pushrod V8 it only helps the classic muscle car market with the tech and go fast goodies they develop
Love to see you and Bowyer in booth dalejr.
Fan engagement, I miss the meet and greets with the drivers before the race. There would be a dozen or so drivers and their cars, Thursday and Friday nights. I had the chance to meet a lot of the drivers that were big in the late '80s and '90s and even got to start a Dale Earnhardt Sr's car as a 7-year-old, second favorite memory.
I live in Phoenix, there was a bar called Tooley's where they most often did it at, fun times
i love clint man
great interview !!
The fact that someone can talk about promotion and marketing activities from a driver seat perspective and from a race track perspective is fantastic cannot wait to see Rd., America this weekend on July 4 they’re expecting 180,000 fans in those gates they brought the whole show it is going to be an incredible race up there rotate tracks bring in new venues stop doubling and tripling up on some of the values really level the playing field amongst multiple tracks Nashville was a great Starting point Rd., America will be next COTA was fantastic glad to see people getting it
Thank you for the video
LOVE the shoutout to Gateway. That is my home track and ownership has made some major investments into the track in recent years. The Indycar races there have been very successful. With Chicagoland losing a race a lot of fans in Illinois and surrounding areas would easily be able to make the trip there. Another option would be to remove a Kansas race and give it to Gateway.
North friggen Wilksboro. Its just sitting there waiting for it comeback. New bleachers, portable bleachers. It can be done. Make it nascars retro track.
Just tear down old buildings and put up canopies. They are making too bug a deal about permanent buildings and stuff like that. The only permanent buildings you might need are a control tower, Server room, and garages, that is it. And safe portable or permanent grandstands.
They should go back to Rockingham! There was some great racing there back in the day!
I was lucky enough to see a cup race there. It was a great race
Taking away downforce will bring the field back together. No need for tapper spacers and all this extra non sense to try and make it exiting.
IMO thy need to dirty up the cars, taking away the "good air advantage". Do away with things that make them more aerodynamic. Make the grille much bigger no splitter, raise the cars up, put springs and roll centers back in the front. Cale's Torino ran 189 at Daytona in 1968, over 50 damn years ago!!
They need to lower speeds only at Daytona and Talledega. Other tracks you will limit corner speeds going to low downforce.
Clints on to something... hope these next gen cars do that...
I REALLY like Clint's idea of rotating thru a few of the former circuit tracks, bringing back one or two a season. Gateway, Pikes Peak, Chicagoland, Kentucky, Rockingham, Hickory, Portland, South Boston, and numerous others. I know some people will say North Wilkesboro, but the people that say this have no idea what shape it's in. That track is in terrible condition and is probably never coming back without literally millions of dollars being poured into it, and I just don't see that happening.
I would have private donations and things like that to get North Wilkesboro going again.
PPIR will never seen another major event. ISC bought PPIR, tore down the grand stands to reduce seating capacity below what IRL and NASCAR require, moved those grand stands to Phoenix, so Phoenix could get more IRL and NASCAR dates. ISC is evil, buying up all the tracks so they can shut them down.. Total scum bags.
My local track Shasta Speedway is in a similar state, an almost failed track. 3/8 Mi used to be a Winston West track back in the day.
LOL I know it's not the same thing but Clint's hat says FTS which just happens to be the name of a small trucking co. out of St. Louis, Missouri that I worked for back in the late 1990s and early 2000s...
Preach it, Clint!! 🤙
There was a time I didn't miss a Richmond race, throw the restrictor plates in the trash.. tune the car for track conditions, turn right more, run in the rain regardless of where you are. All the halftime and mandatory pit stops crap is the dumbest thing ever! Here is a novel idea... How about the first one to the checker wins? Too many participation trophies being handed out. Drivers are very well compensated and insured... Drive the damn car.. let your skills determine your fate.
Straight to the point of success!!!!!!!
Some of the older guys took off the spoiler and picked up 400rpm but he came back in and told junior Johnson to put it back on cause it was possible to keep control of the car after we moved the speeds up to 180-195. I think they should only use a spoiler big enough to keep the car on the ground but no more. Don’t give so much spoiler you will help them control oversteer.
Those dudes would be great to have a beer or ten with
The "Charters" have became a huge money machine. I would like to see the drivers qualify for the race. If the car does not pass inspection, then they would not race. I don't quite see how they can fail prerace inspection, yet start the race. What is the inspection for? If they are going to run 40 cars, let the top 40 qualifiers race. The current point system is a joke, along with the timeouts and stage deal. They wonder why people have lost interest, the old saying, "They can't see the forest for the looking at the trees".
3:51 Jr went from laughing to " did this guy just say that?"
Could be the cussin who knows lol
On clints part on NASCAR taking risk I agree because this is the perfect time to take risks and NASCAR has I mean this year alone we had a dirt race. the wetest Cup race ever. A track the sport have not race on in a decade a brick yard 400 road course a bunch of road courses this year . and other then a couple bumps i say they ain't doing to bad with these changes
part of me heard Clint suggest that North Wilkesboro be given a date..... as a dirt track.... Let's try stuff....
They should let the former drivers from both networks drive the cars. That’s one thing I like about Sky’s F1 coverage. They have so many former drivers and they all get to drive the most current cars so they can speak more accurately to the experience.
You can still see cars hard to drive on Brazillian Stock Car, Nascar nowadays feels like its trying to larp F1
I will check it out
They seem to think that is what makes them look like a professional sport.
I said the same thing. NASCAR Cup Series racing IMO has become "Diet F1"
@@KKFan9 nascar is the most diverse form of racing in the world 🔥
V8 Super Cars are hard to drive, I think. They need to quit making these cars like sports cars.
road america friggin rocked.
No rear spoiler, no front splitter, no restrictor plates, narrower/harder tires and that would show who can truly drive.
Leave the Spoiler just do the rest
Loved hearing Boyer talking about gateway we need a cup race here plenty of nascar fans here but nowhere close to watch
Us fans have been screaming this for years
Well i remember when clint just spun out all by himself. I believe he had an itch on his shoulder?
👀
Dale, Here's an interesting question I have often wondered about.
What is the largest number of cars to finish a cup race in the position of their car number? In other words, #2 finished second, #3 finished third, #5 finished fifth, #6 finished sixth, etc.
Beautiful
Stock cars were hard to drive and fun to watch
A little more than a couple of years ago Mike. It was Larry Pearson in 2010 at a legends race at Bristol & he almost lost his life.
Young drivers can hammer down because they don't know how much it hurts yet.
I think this applies to all type of track racing.
Except Indy. No power steering with downforce, I can’t image how difficult that is to just turn.
This podcast has become one of my faves. It has rekindled the love I had as a younger person for racing. Sadly these drivers just are milktoast as F.
Which drivers?
@@Littlewing1977 any of these new guys they're all boring as s*** they have no personality they're not allowed to have personality they're basically just corporate shills. The older heads that aren't like Kyle Busch and Kevin harvick I never really liked to begin with and don't get me started on somebody like Joey logano or Brad keselowski. All the really interesting people are now in the booth calling the races.
Haven't had any use for Boyer since Spingate 2013 but, I agree. Taking downforce would free up seats for real talent vs. corporate pitch men!
Would be cool if they had virtual reality available during the race of your drivers view. You put the head gear on and are seeing, hearing and feeling the race as it's happening.
Just remember. 550hp on 1.5 miles and above (minus road and plate tracks) That's less horsepower than a showroom stock Shelby GT500 that you can buy at your local Ford dealership and drive home right now (670hp). There's ZERO excuse for the top class of auto racing in this country to have less horsepower than a basic muscle car for street use...
Even ARCA and Xfinity cars are faster than the Cup cars with 550HP. What a joke
100% agree. It's a joke to run the HP as low as they are. They can't even get up to speed on restarts.
@@madmikeschannel8128 and it doesn’t even take skills
Clint should be running the show. NASCAR needs to listen.
Sometimes I think maybe Boyer is DW's son, chip off the ol block..
That's why I don't like him as an announcer
Well, Clint has the DW personality that FOX wants. They want a DW like he was early on his FOX days.
Nashville double header weekend. Fairgrounds and Speedway!
I love that Clint Bowyer is saying to make the cars harder to drive because I fully agree with that listen closely nascar because fans and drivers alike are saying it come on now
There is little that Clint says that I actually disagree with. Love the guy.
@@bobby-ov9qn if there's someone who doesn't like Clint Bowyer find him because I don't know anyone who can hate Clint Bowyer lol
The first spoilers were actually about 1967.
I've been saying that since they announced the new car.
Don't make it easier.
Get the current car up off the pavement, put inch narrower tires on the right side (easier done than some radio personalities would have you believe) and things will get interesting again.
Yes yes and yes!!!!
Great video.....nascar lost its way when they tried to erase their roots....There was a time where Bristol was sold out a year in advance..Now they have empty seats on raceday....I was a fan from the early eighties til the early 2000s....guys struggled and earned a ride....there were independent drivers like Dave Marcus.....it was tough...gritty...and The grandstand was packed
Imagind Dale Sr., driving the recent cars, with his car control? Look at the video of Sr., & Bodine at Riverside from 80's.
Time to get a Builder's Race back on the go. Force every team to run MAX 5L rather than 5.8L and run 100% unrestricted, run whatever may come. 302 CID (4.00" x 3.00" bore/stroke) and start from scratch. New shortblocks (SLEEVES and CRANKS/RODS/PISTONS) for everyone.
They should add rub bars along the side of the car to allow for some bumping and grinding. I often think no driver stands on their cars anymore because the bodies are so delicate they’ll fall through! I bet if you stood on an HMS car, it’d be like tim foil!
Less grip/aero more power always makes great racing
Just get the car off the ground and give them back the HP already.
You boys should do the race
Almost every fan wants harder to drive race cars
And faster
We can only hope
106 years old lol you guys are great nascar needs you two and the dirtymo crew but I agree man we’ve gotten to far away from where we began I’m not saying a little change is a bad thing but I was heart broken over the new transmission why did we have to get away from the 4 speed H pattern ya know if it was good enough for the greats before me then I feel like it’s good enough for me as well I like the familiarity or being able to feel that connection to all the drivers before me but the composite body awesome idea we’ve asked begged for it all someone has to do to ruin your day is nudge your right rear quarter panel a little and it’s over lol the independent rear suspension that was cool I guess I ain’t hurting over it to bad but please let’s keep the H pattern before long what’s going to be separating us from f1 or Indy I feel like racing has always been a family sport so what you fell in love with as a kid and grew up watching on sundays with the family is gone what’s keeping me here other then just passion for the sport I didn’t want to drive a cup car with a freaking automatic basically lol idk I want to drive what I seen my hero’s drive I think a great idea for an all star race would be to maybe if possible run the cars of the 70s or 80s me and my papaw has talked about it with some of our friends and they all thank it might get some of the old fans that left back and if papaw wants to tune in on Sunday that hasn’t watched a race in 10 years has his grand baby’s there with them sees all those bright colors poppin chrome to the bone lol it might hook them back but the timing has to be perfect I don’t know what the heck toyata would do tho lol bring out a Corolla or something awesome episode guys keep grinding and great points I was starting to thank I was to old fashioned lol. Sky rocket 🚀
I just realize we will have a next gen truck and xfinity car we have not seen it yet
Uh oh
Doubt it, neither have really changed if 15 years
No.
THAT IS A GREAT IDEA. TAKE AWAY THEIR POWER STEERING. I HUSTLED A '62 MERCURY WITH A 390 SITTING OVER THE FRONT WHEELS AROUND A DIRT TRACK IN THE '70'S, THAT WAS WORK.
I think Clint is on to something, maybe NASCAR needs to rotate which tracks are on the schedule from year to year so that different towns host and the driving each year is different.
I’d love to see Bowyer on the DJD at least once a month. Also, love to see DJ, Mike Joy and Bowyer call a race like a super speedway
You got your wish
Less downforce more power!
Nascar needs to take a lot of steps back to the way things used to be.
Problem is that you're going to alienate a lot of the newer fans too (which also make up a big part of the entire community). They need to look for a middle ground.
People have been saying that for 15 years but they just don't listen.
Agree! Used to cheer Dale on with my Dad in the 80s and 90s and man that was good racing!
I’d like to see a international l race of champions again!!
The SRX exists
Get rid of the bump stop/coil bind garbage, get the nose up off the ground, make the bodies symmetrical and keep trimming the rear spoiler until all of the drivers are screaming "LOOSE!!!!" The NEXGEN car will be fine if they stick to that formula, especially if it controls cost. Put the difference in performance back into the driver's seat, not the checking account!
Clint is 100% correct, make them harder to drive.
There are drivers in NASCAR at the cup level that are only there because of their family's checkbook...literally guys who would get shamed by 100's of other drivers at Short Tracks across the nation.
It'd be cool for JR to take a few laps in the next GEN car and pod cast his review...
That's clint Bowyer the fox sports analyst position in nascar
The lack of sideforce on the new car will help a bit
Should help quite a bit to make the cars more difficult to drive, nothing to lean on.
Didn't Kyle Bush say "any of these reporters could drive this car" ? ... wasn't that was the COT ... lol and the new car is way easier still.
I’ve been saying the cup cars should be racing gateway for years.
With the next gen I am worried it's to hard to drive I heard some where between the gen 6 and the gen 5 the gen 7 has had the most testing crashes
I’m glad they’re finally doing it
They also need to have tires that wear out at all tracks, like at Darlington.
