I daily drive an '89 Turbo Mk III and really wish it wasn't turbo. While it was reasonably quick when it came out, today it is not fast without some serious modifications. The turbo is less fuel efficient and will require more maintenance. In the '90's that didn't matter but today, 30 years later, replacing parts is much more difficult that it used to be. In looking for a car I had to take what I could get and got lucky enough to find a sport roof with a clean body and good interior. I would swap the drivetrain for an NA tomorrow if someone offered to do the job.

ruclips.net/video/GCRdH89yaK4/видео.html This is incorrect. The "insert" you are referencing being "turbo only" was actually a styling update for ALL Toyota Supra's from 1989 - 1992. None of this generation's supras from 1986-88 had said "insert". However, I do agree with you in that, that "insert" styled front end didn't look as good as the 86-88. Also, props to reviewing a non-turbo version of this car; even if you're review of the exterior styling leaves a lot to be desired :) The inline 6 cylinder engine in this car was super-smooth and sounded great without the turbo. Low-mileage examples of these non-turbo cars are hard to find.

I like your opinion on the look of the car. I totally agree, especially with the turbo grill block thing. I picked up the same one recently 88' with oxblood interior and grey paint. I absolutely love it everyday. It just never gets old, nor do the comments from random people.

Jake's "Bye" was much friendlier today. Love the improvement. lol
Also "Doorstop but in a very nice way" could describe (with considerable accuracy) almost every sports coupe from the late '80s.

2:15 nope. Turbo models were identical on the exterior (except badge and spoiler) to NA models. You're thinking of the 89-92 bumper.

  • @jockihm831
    @jockihm831 3 года назад +1

The insert in the bumper is for 89+ years.
I had an 87 turbo the only exterior difference was the rear spoiler. and the drivers seat on the non-turbo afaik didn't have the 12 way adjustment my turbo did.

Wow the sound on the NA is out of control Its quite loud even louder then a JZ !!

This is GREAT! One of Jake's college friends had an '88 Supra but WITH the turbo - a 7M-GTE. It had a similarly-loud exhaust and a stage 3 many-puck clutch that was impossible to drive smoothly. Hill starts were embarrassing. His had TEMS which sounds like a medical condition but was actually eighties-era adjustable dampers!

its good i just recently pulled the engine and upgraded to metal headgasket and arp headstuds. that was quite the learning experience but also super cool to do. got it back together and running, now just gotta save up for the big turbo kit@@who_dat_boi2903

My 7mge kicks back a bit around 4k rpm, and more around 5k... definitely not flat to redline 👍 it is fast for 1980's standards. nice video though, super underrated engine.
Amazingly reliable...compared to all the elite turbo supras who spend 300+ days a year in the garage 😉

@@alternateself1244 yes! I had an 86.5 with the sport package and no ABS, and an 89 NA white package with no ABS, but with the LSD. Eventually I swapped the differential for a JDM TT-R torson differential and used the LSD for my 92 2JZ-GE swapped NA. No ABS on either one

Also another major difference between the turbo and n/a is the strength of the tranny the r154 is still very desirable. Absolutely love these cars. Great video guys!

i have an MA70 non turbo manual too, and absolutely adore it, so those door trims are metal instead of plastic, split grill front (the insert which was introduced to all A70s during the 2nd generation of A70s). almost identical interior (except all mirrored since i got a UKDM or JDM spec, me and my mates cant figure it out, its got a mix of both parts). Its slow and would get gapped by most cars on the road but has had some stuff done to it so it does output a lot of power at 3.5k rpm onwards. GOnna see if i can output 320hp max without forced induction since i want her to stay as my daily, fun car, but also show car
However i disagree with the idea that it feels like something you can toss around in the idea you don't have to worry about its value, the reason you buy these cars is not because its cheaper than an A80, you mainly buy one of these genuinely because you just want one in particular, in my case, childhood dream car.

I would love to hear the logic of putting in better internals and not turbocharging. I'd love to hear the logic on how the NA can be tossed around more than a turbo. Where are turbos double or triple the price of NA's? Beautiful Supra, but when do they get to the part about how this car is just as much fun as something "performance?" Also, what "retro touches" was that one dude referring to? Its an 87 that seems pretty 80's to me.

Best looking Supra by far :-) I miss my 1989 Turbo Auto. I bought it in 2009 with less than 80k miles for £800 and sold it in 2012 for £1200 with 95k. Now it would be worth around £15,000. Still, it was great fun. Shame Europe missed out on the targa roof though. Jealous of that!
