- Unboxing and using the Eken H9R, a really good budget action camera that comes complete with a good wrist remote. 4K @ 15 fps , 2k and 1080 @60 fps. No doubt the best sports cam review I've ever seen! Excellent and thorough video my friend, very well done. I almost regret buying the Gopro hero 3+ black edition because it was almost $500 when I got it a few years back. This one seems excellent, except for the dramatic warped distortion of the wide lens. Wondering if it has (like the gopro does) the option to shoot "wide" "medium" and "narrow" ?? anyone know? Thanks again.
Thnks mate. Can't remember now if it had that option? But you lose quality when you narrow the FOV as all it does is use a smaller part of the sensor.
Yes, thank you - good point about quality loss when narrowing the FOV. Also just remembered, many video editing programs have lens distortion correction, which works really well. @@bobflyman
For those wondering about the lack of logo, that is simply the older version of the H9R. The new one has the Eken logo where the Wi-Fi symbol is on the old one. Also they updated the case from a square lens cover to a circle one and the packaging is slightly different.

This is good info for those of us considering a solid 2K shooter. I am going to try one out for the very acceptable price even in our Canadian currency which is always lagging behind the USD. Can you tell us whether this camera outputs video from the USB out during the record function??

For not too much more than this one costs, one can sometimes find a Firefly 7s on sale, and unlike this Eken, the Firefly has image stabilization.

Sold me. Was considering the Git2 and now I will aim a little lower. So many versions of the GoPro. I am interested in this for the larger view screen, USB composite video out rather than HDMI. Thanks for the effort, and I really love the high speed unboxing sequence. Always get a kick out of it :-)
even a year after this review the camera still looks good so i'm looking forward to it arriving will be handy dandy for filming my skate tricks & urban exploring stuff

Bill this is just about the best RUclips video I have ever seen. You obviously have some video experience and looks like you are using Sony Vegas to edit. Your review of these cameras is absolutely stunning and complete. One of the major differences that you did not dwell on is the built in LCD viewing screen. You show it but did not mention that the GoPro utilizes a very small LCD screen in the front which is hard to use.
I have the GoPro Black 4 and I had to purchase the snap on rear viewing screen which makes the camera another 50% thicker. The Menu screens on the H9R are much more navigable with the larger rear screen. I find the GoPro 4 a bit trickier to navigate the menus so this a good plus for this budget camera.
On the negative side and not to bring politics into the discussion is the fact that this is for all intents and purposes almost a direct copy of the GoPro cameras, at least in form if not much more and thus intellectual property theft. This is a good example of why President Trump is getting down on China yet takes so much flack for. It is theft and the same as if a guy came to house and stole your motorbike. I make a small product for astrophotography and have to make the price really cheap to the Chinese Thieves to not steal my IP. When will we learn. A guy writes a song and has all the protection in the world. A man or woman invents a truly great camera and gets the profits stolen from the Chinese. Too Bad. It removes the incentive to take the time to invent and bring truly great products to market. The Chinese steal 600 billion worth of IP from the US alone every year. Very sad that they engage in this sort of stealing. It is possible that these knock offs could actually drive GoPro out of business, the very people that brought this type of camera to market and make so much possible for so many. I bring my GoPro to Hawaii and have used it extensively to photograph our trips all over. The camera has brought me many hours of underwater video while snorkeling.
It is sad that the developers of the GoPro camera have to compete with IP property thieves and lose millions in sales they need to recoup their investment in development and design innovation. I bought the GoPro 5 for my son as a Christmas present and paid in the $500.00 US range for it.
Well It is not my job to police the world but thought it worth mentioning. To tell the truth, being the hypocrite that I am, I did give some thought to purchsing one and use it as a surveillance camera on my Travel Trailer/Caravan when I leave it unattended. It would be an easy task to camouflage it with say some tree bark or install it inside with a small hole for the lense and have it watch the RV while I am out and about when camping in the woods. Its small size and 2.5 hour recording capability might make it a good camera for surveillance. Perhaps an external battery pack could be constructed to let run continuously for 2.5 hours looping of course.
I see many uses for this budget camera. This is truly an informative and beautifully done video as well as good instruction. Thanks my friend for the great work and review.

Thanks for your kind comments. Yes, many of these cameras are kind of copies of GoPro's but at a better price . Go Pro still produce some of the best action cameras around, but for the average user this is very good. Re front screens, yes, just another silly gimmick! It's you guys that drive on the wrong side of the road!

As a friend uses an Eken and I wanted to know more about it, I came about your video. I enjoyed the video scenes around the village! But I noticed that you use Magix Vegas to render and that you are probably not aware that you should put Smart Resample OFF. This will eliminate the ghosting effect that you can see throughout your video and are especially notable in moving scenes. (Try freezing the video at an action scene to see what I mean..) Disabling Smart Resample will definitely improve the overall clarity. You will need either pre-14 versions of Magix Vegas or the latest build of Vegas 14 (122) to use it. Smart resample should always be disabled when video fragments of different fps are combined. In addition, I should also point out that rendering a 15fps video to @60fps will always decrease quality.. As you've also remarked. The latest build of Magix Vegas is very intuitive and has an option to: Project / Render as / Mainconcept AVC/AAC / Internet 4K 2160p which should pick the best frame rate for rendering automatically. You could optionally even customise this template and use 'high' in 'profile'.
I use Sony Vegas Pro 13 and I do turn smart resample off! You Tube compression ruins all videos!
YT just re-renders if you don't upload videos that are not the standard for YT... If you render, make sure you render with: Project/Render as../Mainconcept AVC/AAC and then choose a setting/resolution that is in the 'Internet' section. Have fun / bonne chance / good luck..!
Thanks. In fact I always render Main Concept AVC/AAC 1080 60 RUclips but custom, ie video rendered 'best', smart resample off etc. RUclips compression screws video! I also upload smaller , less that 500mb tests to Vimeo and they view better, but my RUclips videos are 2.5 - 3 gbs size. good luck to you too buddy.

Great video Bob, thanks for sharing on youtube. I just received this very same camera H9R with the remote, but with 4K@25fps, 2.7K@30fps and 1080@60&30fps resolutions. Any idea which microSD card would be best, or what would be the largest capacity that the H9R could support?

Great review and looks like a great little budget cam. I cant decide on if I should pay a bit more and get the Git2 for the gyro or save my money and give this a try. I would mainly use the camera for cycling. Is it worth the bit extra for the Git2?
+Alan Davies Difficult question,. When I get a chance I'll do a side by side with the Git2. The gyro in the Git2 is excellent though.

+Alan Davies GIT2's gyro is nice but what I like is the remote. Git2's remote allows you to either turn off the camera or stop whatever mode you are in. If you have the Git2 on the helmet or bars you may not be able to see which mode the camera was in last so just hit the stop button. If the GIT2 is setup in quick-shot it will not turn off the camera but will stop the recording mode which may be on if you lost track on which mode you were in the last time you pressed the remote's button. I use two GIT2 camera's on my motorcycle. One is mounted on my back trunk and the other is under my front mirror. I have two remotes setup on my handlebars so it is easy to forget which camera is in what mode so I just hit the stop buttons on both remotes and then either select a 16 meg burst photo or movie mode.
I think for a bouncy action sport like MTB the gyro would be very useful to have. It works very well on the Git2.

I think maybe Firefly but hard to say as Eken have made a lot of changes over the couple of years.

I notice that this one does not have the Eken logo on it and neither does the one for sale on Gearbest. The Eken on Bangood does have the logo but I would prefer to buy from Gearbest as their priority shipping is much cheaper. Any thoughts please?

Thanks for the review. I just got this camera and use it alot when out riding my Harley. I notice when I try to upload it and edit the video it won't save. Interesting that it will only save when I turn the volume on the video all the way down (I add my own music so it really don't bother me). But I would like to know if Im doing something wrong. I use their Ez ICam app to edit the videos down then on to another editor on my Iphone to add music but I would like to have the sound of the bike in the video. I have used multiple editors with the same results. Any clue to what it could be? Thanks - Jesse
Well when I edit I add a seperate audio track if I want to add music or dialogue. I use Sony Vegas Pro 13. Maybe when you add you music it overwrites the audio from the camera?

@@bobflyman exactly, they are more than good enough for video quality, I take it on holidays for videos, and the quality is great, very easy to travel with, two batteries and charger included, i don't use 4k I find HD is far better quality, Iam getting great results, and some beautiful video, this little camera has been a gem for me, I showed the video quality to a mate, and I ended up having to send off for one for him, he was sick for what he paid for a gopro,
I think GB sells a fake (probably imars rebranded), on this unboxing video (got here from banggood site link) the provided packaging, instruction manual, waterproof case is also different not just camera labels from what I received from gearBest. Or just there is a V3.2 version?

As far as I recall it hasn't. You won't get EIS in a camera at this price.

1. Can you set it to start recording looping video as soon as it turns on?
2 Is it rain/splash proof without the case?
3. Can you turn off the LCD screen display while recording?
Yes if it's set to loop record it will do that when you turn it on. And no, without the case it will not be splashproof.

Hard to say now as Eken have changed some models since I made this and I found some new models not as good as the originals I tested. Plus there are too many fakes around now.

Just tried it and no. You can always take a frame grab from a video though if you want stills.

did you have any problems getting it in the non water case?
No problems, but when these cameras are new the gasket is quite firm so you often need to squeeze the case to be able to close the clip.
bobflyman the waterproof case is fine. it was the "open" housing.
If you mean the skeleton case, a bit tight, but they often are. Have to lift the lip of the top holding thing.
yeah, my lip was a good 2-3mm behind the front edge. i ended up just cutting it off. still fits. and if need be, i can put a new lip on.
do you reccomend if i use this as car camera? will it be able to record and view vehicles license plate clearly, i saw ur test vid it somehow can only show the car license plate number when really close.
Should be ok for that, but all cameras do no not like the heat which they can get when in behind a car windscreen. It can cause problems.
is this camera compatible with GoPro accessories? such as the suction cup mount?
I think compatible, but don't have a GoPro to test that?

Not sure what you mean? It records to the microcard, I use good brand class 10.

Good question! I think it's a water resistant remote but not sure if the radio signal to the camera would work underwater?
It must be very uncomfortable riding with your head at that angle. Perhaps you could adjust the camera to compensate. ???

cause the other options are bold and grey, not selectable. the 1080p30fps is the only one thats selectable, cant understand why, maybe the card doesnt support 4k? no idea

I almost decided to buy but when I saw your video and pressed pause on your trip then I realized how poor quality it is. When you move fast then it gives 2 pictures at once :-(

Hi, just got this today. Front casing lense protector badly scratched, remote not working, and one time had to remove the battery as nothing was working all a sudden, i format card and it switched it self off, but what i'm not happy about is the video recording that came out very bad indoors with light on, lots of rice. set on 1080p 60 fps and sd card is sandisk 32gb SDHC 10, Tried 2 of them. any idea why please? even when i switch it on you can see that it's not clear. Paid €49.00 and €21.00 Tax with DHL ,never will use again. contacting gearbest is a nightmare. My THL 5000 Phone has the camera 100 times better then this crap, beside this at night time will probably suck big time. sorry but Gearbest rubbish item.

Noel Borg none of these cameras will give great results in poor light. Frame rates usually drop and it's bound to get grainy. If you want a camera for good results in low light you need to several times as much and get a dslr!

@@kiwiaus absolutely. Tech stuff always gets better and cheaper. That Seabird camera I just tested was selling at £62, admittedly no accessories. But superb. Sharp. Great colour and native 4K with EIS.

And to me.. He should buy EleCam Explorer Elite for Shutter Roll though I think I may have lucked a good one. Elite has poor HDR at 4K but have noticed same on nearly all Action Cams using the Novatek NT96660 chipset and IMX078 image sensor including Firefly 6S.
The awful "ghost blob" in the sky but to be fair 4K is really pushing the IMX078 sensor to its limits and I should be happy my Elite films "4K" 2880x2160 at 24fps and isn't upscaled 3840x2160.
The Eken H9R Sunplus 6350 chipset and OV4689 image sensor seems better in this regard. The Gearbest H9R is Sunsky NOT an Eken but in China that is a bit meaningless as they are all made in the Shenzen Electronics factory complex.
For no extra cost I can get you a "Flyman" branded H9R or most others except SJCAM and I am not joking. LOL

To me this is like 480p probably it has fake specs , I've seen 4k And 1080 and even 720p that has way much better clear and sharper video quality . Chinese crap and Gearbest shitty item. €49. plus €21.tax down the drain. and it gets very hot when charging with USB with my PC. i probably won't use it as dash cam as needs to be always plugged in and i'm sure it will not last more then a week, or might burn my £250,000 work HGV Truck. Sorry mate but i got the latest one and it really sucks.
