This is the first time I've watched a turning video and thought maybe I'll get a wood lathe. You made it look fun. As I was a machinist for close to 60 yrs. wood turning just never really tripped my trigger. Thanks great job as always. BTW you didn't shive that Murphy guy soon enough, he stopped by my place yesterday 🤣.
That's such a great comment to read. Glad you enjoyed it :) And it is a lot of fun!
That was oddly satisfying to hear the tone change as you parted it off the lathe. My 6 year old came in the room, saw that I was watching a video, and instantly recognized it. He said, "Is that Jay?" Then, he asked, "Has he done anything funny?" I told him, no, not yet. You see, he loves it when you stop in the middle of the video and say, "Hello," or something funny like that. ha ha. Good video!
hahahahaha. Tell him I said Hello!
Jay Bates I told him and he smiled the biggest smile. Later, he came up to me and said, "Did Jay really say that?" It was cute.
Taking an otherwise cheap tool and turning it into something truly elegant, Quite a super power!!
Heck Yeah! I just gave away my first screwdriver I made today! What a great coincidence!
I love it!
It was nothing like yours with the versatility, just a small 2" shank Phillip's that went to a cheap reversible handle in a big box of miscellaneous things to do things with, so I used JB Weld and a Wine bottle cork, along with CA, Bondo and Brass plunbing fittings to make a unique tool, and the guy I gave it to was showing it off when I later arrived to ask him his opinion, and now I have an order for a couple of more items to fill, with basically everyone who was at this guys house at the time very intrigued by the things I can make, so whether they really mean to buy something from me or not, It was nice to see my work liked, if not fully loved by others.
I'm inspired, and that is all that matters.
I love your videos, so keep up the good work!
Maybe someday I'll be part of your community!
Great vids.
I can't tell you how many times I have gone back to the camera and seen that message "camera stopped recording because memory card full"... the air turns blue every time! Lovely project though, and they turned out good. Have a good time in Oklahoma!
Nothing can BEAT the WOOD Which gives an elegant look and finish! MEMORABLE WORK JAY!!
Jay, I want to say thank you for these videos. I'm a hobbyist woodworker, and have built your workbench, restored a handplane following your video, and have a few more of your projects on my list...this screwdriver included. Cheers!
Jay, Just watched this again and sent it to my son so my grandson Blakey could watch you make the screw driver you gave him at Skiatook. I FaceTime'd with him today and he was still talking about it. I can't thank you all enough, everyone was so kind to us both. Thanks for all you do Jay. #videowoodworkers
That's great to read, Gary. Glad he's enjoying it.
Nicely done!
For me,. I found I could soak the plastic handle in boiling water for a couple of minutes, and the insert slid right out. Different brand, but it should work the same.
Good idea... May do one as an octagon handle. Just feels really good in the hand.
Wow this is such a good idea! I will definently do this for my father this Father's Day!
:)
My experience with the tennon for the ferral is to make it a tight fit so it can actually compress the wood fibers slightly. I've had a couple come loose over time, just like that and with glue, from humidity changes. Just an FYI.
I honestly just purchased some screwdrivers last week for this same type project. I'll be using maple for the handles. hope mine turn out as good as yours! I've also got the same Lennox screwdriver it lives in the door pocket of my truck. Handy thing to have.
The dark ferrules look awesome with the purpleheart.
Such a simple idea! That is, what makes a real craftsman. Greetings from Germany
1. Harbor Freight has coupons for those screwdrivers as freebies all the time.
2. If you file a flat on a dowel the size of your hole and lay a pin on it, then slide the handle on, you can turn & finish the bottom of the screwdriver easily.
3. If you make the handle bigger around, not only will it be more comfortable, but you can also get more leverage on the screw with less effort. The ones I make are probably half again as large as the one you made here & people love them.
jay bates you are a very talented young man .I enjoy watching your videos
Great turn. Nice idea on the cheap screwdriver and adding your own touch to make a custom handle.
I think the handle being larger is an advantage, especially for older, physically challenged people like myself. Meaning people with nephropathy. My hands are numb all of the time and gripping things is a real challenge. I for one certainly appreciate your video and the idea of how to improve one of my often used tools!!!
Nice job. I love that type of screwdriver/tool, but being able to stand it on end would be great because they do have a habit of rolling away. If I had a shop, I'd give it a go and put a magnet in the end and add a belt clip.
I'd be pretty chuffed with as a present.
Great video Jay. You never fail to impress. I'm hoping to get out there in June to Oklahoma. Looking forward to seeing all of you. That guy Murphy visit me last week to man. Long story anyway Jay thanks again
Thanks for sharing Jay! I do the same with screwdrivers purchased from Home Depot. They are the least expensive in my area. Have sold dozens and never had a complaint.
I really liked the lighting of the outdoor shots
That is a great screwdriver. Would love one but living in an apartment in NYC it is impossible to build stuff. Being retired on a fixed income going to the meet and greet would be out of the question. Thanks for a nice video.
Beautiful result! Love the re-build. FYI, I think Murphy lives in my neighborhood. He seems to stop by and commandeer my shop every once in a while. Thanks for a nice video! JB
This is awesome. Just figured out Christmas presents for my brothers.
I like the bigger handle also. Nice piece of work, cool project idea
Very nice! It looks like the old finish worked just fine, even if it was expired. By the way, I have found that certain shapes of handles that I need to torque on work better than others and the cylinder seems to lose traction in my hands, especially if I am sweating. A nice alternative is a rounded off square shape or rounded off triangle. Ive always likes how Snap-On screw drivers felt and gripped with their squared off shape. But these came out looking great with that wood! I would love to get a lather like that JET one day!
like seeing home built stuff keep America great
Great gift idea. have a Stanly like that that has become my go to .
2 bucks at habor freight and I agree, don't know how I ever lived without the 6 in one screw driver.
Lol this is funny, I had a similar idea a few weeks ago.
I made some cherry blanks that are still drying atm.
Another reason to do this (my reason at least) is that you can make a smaller handle. That way I can fit it into my small biking backpack.
Love all your videos so far. I Had just a thought on this one. What if you left the handle with some flat on four sides? That way when you are upside down working on something and set your screwdriver down it won't roll away.
I love those drivers, way to upgrade them. Thumbs up.
That's true...in the original form, you can kind of feel like "eh...he gave me cheap screwdriver". But with the nice wooden handle where you seem to have made it yourself (from their viewpoint), it will be "an awesome custom-made gift". Hehe
Never realized the red ones had 2 more tools.... Always just used the bits. Thanks!
I'd love to have one of those. I think they're perfect!
ESP THE 6TH ONE
Nice to see another Mississippi State fan on here! Currently going there for Civil Engineering. Hailstate! Those handles turned out great also.
Nice! I've lived in Starkville since 2011. Love it here.
Me thinks I will make some as gifts too! Thx for the inspiration.
When you find that Murphy dude, just remember to leave enough of him intact 'cause I wanna get my 2 cents worth in on him, also.... lol You took some mundane looking tools and made something beautiful and functional! I likey that !!
Very beautiful work lived hands
BP films
Already have my tickets for the Skiatook woodworkers show. Only about 30 minutes from my house. See you there.
Awesome. See you there :)
beautiful work, I would made more of a palm swell rather than a taper, but that is one damn good looking driver. Now I have another project for the winter. Thanks for the idea!
Great job Jay! I like the way you left the ridge for your thumb, awesome. It is very good to see that Murphy likes it in Michigan...please keep him on your side of the MI/Ontario border.😎 Love your channel.
i want a workshop so bad... i want to make my own custom tools
very inspiring video!
You seem like a real cool dude. I thoroughly enjoy your videos.
I'm normally really cool in the winter. I stay hot in the summer months.
great now i need a wood lathe!!! beautiful handles, love that they are not identical,if you use m as a gift it shows you care for your friends and dont mass produce something (like the plastic ones you stripped) just because you can
This is an awesome little project.
Lovely!
And I wasn't just talking about you in that shirt :D
I want one of those with robertson bits...
Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) Klein makes them with Robertson bits
Thanks @Jason I should have known that! I've seen Klein tools before. I'll put that on my Amazon wish list...
I have the Klein, but I find it a bit annoying to use. The Robertson bits get stuck in the screw and pull out of the holder, then drop on the floor and roll under something heavy. Of course, I'm halfway across the room before I notice the bit is missing. Maybe because mine is older, I think I bought it more than 10 years ago.
John Heisz I've had the same issue with my klein 8in1. but I love it for electrical work, the only one I need, except I need 4 because of the bit staying stuck in outlet screw or dropping in muck, it's either under something heavy or camouflaged in muck. who has the best quality? I wanna get started on next Christmas presents now. Thanks.
good idea Jay,will have to fire up my lathe and make a couple, please look after Murphy while he's away from home he doesn't travel Well! 😆😆😆😆
I think the handle should have grooves in it, just for extra grip when you're torquing down on things. I have a really old screwdriver, hand made, not sure if it was turned or carved, easily over a hundred years old as I believe I was told it was my great great grandfather's. Somehow it was kept in really good condition, no rust or anything, and the handle isn't all beat up.
I really want to get a lathe, but I just don't have the money or space, and all I have is a concrete patio with a shed that's already full. Some day, I might get into it and make all of my hand tools. I'm also considering just doing a cnc table with a fourth axis lathe attachment, then I could do intricate pieces that I'd never be able to do by hand.
That's a cool little project/gift.
Nice work. I wish there was a video woodworkers event in my country. Sounds like fun!
Great idea. I am addicted to multipurpose tools. Most of the time they aren't great for daily use but they have saved my rear on many a long trail ride or the side of the road breakdown.
Wow, a straight spade bit. I've never seen one in the wild.
longshot789 I bought a five-pack from Aldi a while ago as cheap spares. Every one was bent out of the box. Straight into the recycling.
Nice man! See you in OK, will be fun to watch you build and maybe help out.
Those are beautiful Jay. Nice work.
love this screwdriver. Awesome idea Jay.
Awesome work. Beautiful handles
loved the video. I have a few of the same screw drivers from harbor freight and have been wanting to do the same thing.
Boys and their Toys. Great Satisfaction
I'd think some cross honing on the handle would give a bit more grip during use. Rather than the polished, that may be a bit slippery if sweaty.
nice idea to spruce up a cheap screw driver. careful with the nut driver ends of the red screw driver. I stripped that out pretty easily at work driving some quarter inch screws with my drill.
Great idea! I know several makers who will get these for Xmas! Thanks for the inspiration!
I make the same drivers, great gifts, everyone likes them but are afraid to use them because they say they are "to nice". I get my donor screwdrivers from Harbor Freight and Rural King. I epoxy the hardware in, may try CA sometime and compare. Great video though!!
Beautiful and inspirational. What about gear shift knobs? I have seen clock unwinders made almost exactly this way too. Also maybe a valve seating stick.
Murphy's Law: Whatever can go wrong, will. O'toole's corollary: Murphy was an optimist.
That is REALLY awesome. Wish I had a lathe.
I live about an hour and a half from Skiatook. Sounds like it will be fun. See you there!
Nice handles.
send the sixth one over here to Ireland if you want, just write potatoes on the package, straight through customs. turned out nice.
Beautiful work nicely done
They look great...they would (wood) be a pleasure to use!
those are actually 7 in 1 screwdrivers the nut in the handle works as a nut driver as well i have one of those i use at work as a throwaway in my belt
That a really cleaver idea, I just might steal it lol
Nice job that will make great gifts. Suggestion: buy a 1/8" parting tool. I think it gives better results and makes less waste.
can't wait for a 2017 shop tour!
Something from nothing (well relatively cheap). Great job Jay.
if you leave the purple heart in the sun it will turn a nice dark purple again. you can also use a torch to bring the purple out.
I love purpleheart. Multi-screwdriver looks great Jay!
Jay, Harbor Fright (yes, I know it's not spelled that way)
has, with the free coupons, their version of this tool.
I've got 4, and paid about NOTHING.
I've also been getting their 6 piece screwdriver
set, again, not paying for them.
steve
Nice handle, however I prefer a handle with 4 sides. When I can't exert enough torque I can attach a wrench to it to increase the torque greatly. I also like a fat handle for the same reason. If the metal insert is hex a wrench goes on that nicely too.
Nothing beats hand made tools. I once made a special shaped screwdriver to fix a car out of a spike.
If you want the purple to come out in Purpleheart, just put it in the oven for about 25 minutes at 400 degrees.
very nice job man! i enjoyed watching. thanx for sharing the video!!!
Very cool build man, this is a great idea.
Nice wall tool rack!
Nice work, Jay.
Great idea! Very nice! Thank you for sharing!
This is so cool! I like the idea of making new handles for tools!
i really enjoyed this video think i will try this out someday lol thanks
Hey Jay, if you don't like the 6th one you should send it too me. I think it looks good and could put it too good use lol. Love the channel brother!!!
Have you ever torched purple heart before finishing? It highlights the purple more. Love your videos Jay.
Nice work Jay!
Whoa! Matryoshka style screwdrivers! :)
good job Jay
Very impressive! Good job!
Hi there from Portugal,
Nice Handles :D
Obrigado(Thanks)
Nice tidy workshop too Jay! Don't think that that goes unoticed!
you need to make a handle for the cam lock on your tail stock, and you shouldnt need to get it that tight! a nice turned handle over the lever that gives you some more leverage should do the trick!
those turned out great Jay. looking forward to meeting you in Oklahoma
See you there!
Very cool gift idea! Wish I could come see you in OK (my neck of the woods! ) but I'm running a summer camp for kids out in the OK panhandle. One of their daily activities is a craft time. We usually introduce them to a little woodworking. This project, like some of your others, would translate well to what we do. Of course, we'd need a lathe. Nevertheless, thanks for the inspiration!
I like the 6th one, looks funky 8-)
