If you have been an O/O for 13 years I find it hard to believe you don't know that many O/Os are leased on to companies and have full access to the load boards. I can choose all my own loads.
You are talking about leasing onto a mega carrier. Yes that is basically the same as being a company driver. But for a single truck owner, many people don't want all the extra cost and hassle of doing the extra paperwork as well as driving and maintaining the truck.
I drove for a few companies and I've been leased on to large companies. Now I have all the freedom and much less hassle. I can understand if you as an individual, would rather have your own authority, but you have had 13 years to do so. It is almost impossible to go from company to own authority without having some time running your own truck and business. Why would you want to support a bill that takes other peoples opinions away and forces them either into a company or out of the industry. If people are happy with the situation they are in, it is not the governments place to dictate how you negotiate. Unions are garbage and a total scam. Nobody should be forced to join or pay dues for the opportunity to make a living.

If you're leased on to any company with 1 or 100 trucks you are not an O/O, you are an O. Choosing your loads from SOMEONE else's pool of freight, running on SOMEONE else's authority, IFTA, 2290, insurance makes you basically an employee.

It sounds like you are talking about leasing a truck from like swift or something. That is a terrible idea, but the answer is not to make it illegal to be a contractor. People should be allowed to make their own choices and should be educated about the pitfalls of what you are talking about. There is a huge difference between what you are describing compared to buying or leasing a truck from a dealer and leasing on to a small or medium size company.
I run the board for no less than 2.50 per mile.

I'm not familiar with all the nuances of trucking. I'm a courier and have a few other side gigs. I understand that there is a lot that goes into meeting monthly overhead costs. Everyone is entitled to their own position on this matter. I get that as well. I listened to you speak for the last 24 mins and I'm still waiting to hear how AB5 is going to help the economy. The economy is already crippled due to the pandemic and now they want to take away the money from the Entrepreneur. Freelance work is now off the table. Why? Money & Control!!!
This affects the trucking industry, yes but it also affects IC's across the board in all industries. A major trucking company came out with an official notice to their drivers. They have 1 of 3 choices; (1) Quit (2) Move (3) Stay and deadhead out of CA and pick up loads in other states that don't have this law.
What I will say is that companies will not be able to easily get over on people on the one hand, offering rates to IC's that are way below what they should be getting. They will be forced to pay out more money. I will agree that some companies take advantage of IC's. However with that said, we should have the right to choose. Do your research, and make the choice that's best for you. The pandemic forced a lot of people out of work and into the gig economy. If this law is implemented and millions more loose their source of income, this country is going to be a hot mess.
This affects the Entrepreneur with their own business at home and taking different gigs, whether it be online work or in person. Musicians, photographers, freelance writers, Uber/Lyft drivers, medical transcriptionist, customer service people and the list goes on. Heck this even affects Amazon delivery drivers.
Another thing these law makers are not taking into account is the disabled person in a wheelchair, the parent who stays home with the kids, and takes them to and from school and while they are in school does some freelance work on the side. Those who can only work from home, maybe they care for an elderly or ill family member. So if AB5 comes to Georgia, I will loose 4 streams of income. My husband passed away in February of this year, aside from the pain of his loss, I also lost his income. People out here doing what they need to do in order to pay the bills. So NO, I'm not for AB5!!!!!

If a person chooses to do a lease with a company or get their own authority or be a company driver it should be their individual choice. If a person chooses not to do their own research before they become a company driver for any particular company that is there own fault. And if a person chooses not to do their own homework and find out about the different lease programs out there that is their own fault. The government should not be dictating to us our choices of where and how we want to work

You must hang around some really dumb or ignorant people if they need everybody to hold their hand and tell them everything. It's called being an adult and doing your own research and stop playing the victim....
