Installing Coilovers on My 370Z (COMPLETE GUIDE)

  • When drivers look at a set of springs, they concentrate mainly on the spring rates, but the material and manufacturing process is equally important. There are 4 factors that manufacturers must consider when producing a spring;
    A consistent spring rate throughout the entire stroke
    The largest amount of stroke
    Durability against loss of spring height
    Being as lightweight as possible
    If you’re looking to stance your car, most of these criterion do not apply as you’re typically looking for a very high sprint rate to reduce the amount of travel, so you can keep the wheel as close to the fender as possible. That is basically the complete opposite of what I am looking for.
    A properly designed shock and spring setup will allow the tire to stay connected with the road to increase traction and in result, a shorter lap time. Having a longer stroke with a bit of coilover sag is actually ideal for racing. Take note of how much sag a vehicle has with its stock struts.. its there for a reason.
    I will let you know how these new coilovers are for me after I get the ride height and other specifications in order. Right now, it is too low, and these springs have settled another half in inch in the first 24 hours. Time to raise the car…

    I have the Fortune Auto 500's on my 2014 370Z Nismo. Love the way it handles. I got 13K/11K custom Swift springs, but am considering just a slightly stiffer springs. Even now though, its handles great. Probably my favorite aftermarket addition so far! Also, another fantastic addition to these coilovers is a front sway bar from Hotchkis (great bang for the buck). I have the simple install on my channel in case anyone is interested.
    Thanks for the install video. Lots of people (including myself) found it really handy!

    Nice video, I’m looking at getting some Fortune Auto 500’s for my 350z, how do you like yours? Any issues? I’m still trying to decide if I want to go with swift springs or standard springs (my car is a DD for me, I never track it or anything).

    Because your brother had a vw golf, do u have any reccomendations on a good set of semi cheap coilovers? Something that sits good but doesn't ride to firm.

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  6 лет назад

      To be honest, the cheap eBay coilovers that Luca bought (the Tieferlegungsfederns) turned out to be quite good, and they're still in great condition.. That doesn't mean that all cheap coilovers are good, but we were quite impressed with them, especially for the price. They ran Luca $250 or something along those lines. They did not have any dampening though. If you ask me, BC's are the best bang-for-buck, fully adjustable coilovers on the market. They are $1000 and are well worth the money.

    Always assuming that Nissan know a thing or two about their suspension design and set up, I'm puzzled about the rear suspension placement of the spring - meaning the ''bulky' lower arm arrangement and the upper body location which supports the loads at the top of the spring. This aftermarket coil over requires the same body location designed to take the loads of the damper only but now is expected to also take spring loads. I trust that someone has done the math on this design change?

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  6 лет назад +1

      Nissan engineered the Z (350 and 370) with this same rear suspension design. What is interesting is that Nissan's high performance race Z's have suspension setups just like the aftermarket one I installed.
      Maybe its a more comfortable design? Maybe it was cheaper to do it that way? Maybe they designed it to be repaired easier? If you can find out that answer, I'd love to hear it.

      That is a great way to do it, but they usually need to be turned a bit to ensure the top hat lines up into the strut towers, and the lower cup of the coilovers needs to be slightly turned to get it to fit in the lower control arm. Bottom line is that it almost ALWAYS needs to be adjusted again

    You absolutely should have a baseline preload and ride height set before installation, even if it matches stock.

    • @freakyRunner
      @freakyRunner 6 лет назад

      Drew Mestel this "preload" Thing is soooo wrong , on this Type of coilovers.
      this is a liniar spring you can set the one springcollar on a complete other hight than the other , it changes nothing over the stiffness of the spring.
      For this Style of coilovers (BC, Fortune and others )the Preload and hight adjusment thing that someone invented only for Marketing reasons for selling their Shit.
      Don't get ne wrong "preload" on Springs exist but only on progressive springs.
      Progressive Springs change there stiffness at a Higher preload.
      But on Fortune Coilovers or BC Coilovers or any Manufacturer that builds this Style of coilover uses Linear springs.
      And the "hight" adjusment on this Coilovers is also not for adjusments of the ridehight. 😉
      Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

    • @DrewMestel
      @DrewMestel 6 лет назад

      freakyRunner I stand by what I said. You're explaining something to me that I've done already and understand. The preload is a predeterming factor when setting your ride height therefore is is important to measure or minimally be aware of. And who said that preload affected spring rate lol??

      @@ghostsmoke11 Basically, "Kilograms" is a unit of mass. In Physics and engineering, we use "newtons" and "pounds" as a unit of force applied, which is the preferable unit obviously for measurement. In the video where he says the spring is set for some amount of "kilograms", that would in the engineering and physics would imply that is the mass of the spring itself, rather than its rated load in a physics or engineering context.

    did you ever change your rear spring rate? true type coilovers should be around 12/5k ration not 11k/8k iirc

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  3 года назад

      What do you mean they should be in that range? True rear spring rates are typically higher for the same spring rates on a divorced setup. I was running 11/8, but switched to even stiffer 14/11 👍

    • @seethruhead7119
      @seethruhead7119 3 года назад

      @@milanmastracci So the geometry of the suspension for a 370z means that 5k springs on true type are equal to about 10k springs on divorced. 8k in the rear seems like a lot to me for 11k in front. Feal for instance base spring rate for their 441 for the 370z is 12k/5k
      i'd be surprised if your setup doesn't oversteer too much, maybe not, depends on lots of factors i guess.

    When you lower the front end with coil-overs, be aware that you will experience front end scraping.

  • @Cybuch44

    Just a FYI about corner balancing - this car is pretty unbalanced from the factory and it's hard to corner balance this car well, as it requires different spring rates from side to side (I don't mean front to rear, but left to right). So adjusting the ride height by taking measurements from the ground or center of wheel to the fender should be just enough.

  • @Soravia
    @Soravia 4 года назад

    If you replace with "True Coilover", your rear damper top install point needs reinforcement to not crack and deform under load.

    • @Smokeybear_j.b

      I know that happens with the 350 but is that the same on the 370

    • @Soravia
      @Soravia 4 года назад

      @@Smokeybear_j.b it's on every car with similar setup. BMWs suffer the same. Load is designed to be where spring sits. Dampers were put in separate place with less reinforcement.

      @@swervv2957 Not sure how much reinforcement G37 and 370Z got. I wouldn't do it on any car. Some race ppl go to great lengths and weld in extra metal. Even on strut based BMW and so on crack front towers are a real thing. They had to reinforce them and later on added extra plates to distribute the load.
