- A quick real world review of the Samyang 50mm f1.4 mkii FE lens for Sony E mount cameras. I have had this lens for about a year now, and have experience using this lens to film and photograph weddings, photographing graduation balls and school proms, as well as other portrait work and here I give my thoughts on the lens!

Hey thanks for this video. I am about to upgrade my old 50mm 1.8 to keep up with my others GM lens ( 24, 35, 85) and was looking into the Samyang. It would be nice if could make a comparison between this Samy and the new 50 1.4 GM.
If I get time I will do this. I have a really busy summer ahead though so it might be a while away. In short, I’d say the Sony is sharper at the edges (very impressive sharpness across the image at f1.4), whereas the samyang is sharp in the centre and middle section of the image, but falls off towards the edges (at f1.4), particularly at closer distances. Sony has a bit faster autofocus and a bit more reliable, but the samyang still has strong autofocus particularly for photo, video it can be a bit inconsistent. Sony has more vignetting wide open. Both have lovely bokeh.
The Sony is the better lens overall, I’d say if the 50 is going to be your main workhorse lens, go with the Sony if you can afford it. If budget/price is of concern, you’ll be happy with the samyang and it is a great lens with just a couple of weaknesses. I upgraded because I use it mainly for weddings, and I want to be able to confidently use a 1.4 lens at 1.4 and not be worried that it might not be razor sharp towards an edge.

Samyang 75mm 1.8 vs 50mm 1.4 ???
Obviously different focal lengths but the 50mm f1.4 mk ii is a much better lens than the 75. The 75 is good, but I found it’s focus was a bit too slow for subjects moving at any decent pace
