  • Sometimes, listening to your father is in your best interest. In this case my brother took our fathers advice 35 years ago and kept his very first car. Here he is to tell the story on how all of that unfolded throughout his life. Although life has many hurdles and hard times you have to overcome, cars, in our family stick with us. Especially, my brother and his '69 Oldsmobile F85 W31. Join us in celebrating 35 years of ownership and counting and check out the other videos we have saving the classics we love.

What an extraordinary walk down your memory lane. I've been watching you from afar, on the yellow one, cringing at what seemed to me as the ubiquitous never ending money pit, sometimes shaking my head as you attacked it all and I do mean all...There is nothing else that compares to any Olds from this era, the way there's a solid thunk as the door closes, the cam at a loping idle, all flooding my own memory. As a 15 &16 year old growing up in western Pennsylvania, my uncle owned in Salem, Ohio the oldsmobile dealership, Zimmerman Olds. My cousin had a 1966 Olds 442 convertible, was originally a dark blue light interior, of course a 4 speed, had it repainted black, and had all the SS/chrome trim removed at that time. I would usually spend a couple weeks each year over there, hanging around the dealership getting the most out of my youth. I remember quite vividly while driving that car at least at 80 mph burying my right foot to the floor and the secondaries from the Q-jet popping open and shoving me into the back of the seat. It was of course somewhat modified with a 455 from a Toronado, that had been replaced from a Toro under warranty. The F41 suspension also set the Olds apart from it sibling rivalries, the boxed lower control arms and sway bar that allowed these to corner like they were on rails. I could go on and on. Even the beautiful olds plate on the front bumper, was a dealer advert plate, they used to put them on all the cars in the showroom, my Uncle had given me one, wow, wish I Still had that! When I say probably like many others understand that "it's what we do" I truly do get it and perhaps sadly even more understand it. The interior of your W-31, in the later material, is nothing more than an upgrade, as I recall they were all a shiny black utilitarian cover, as was the rubber floor liner.
I know the good Dr.Olds be smilin'

More History. I bought my second 442(1976) while I was in the Coast Guard stationed In Mobile Alabama. It was sitting on a used car lot(Karmart) on Government blogs and had 42,000 miles. The first owner, a woman, purchased it new from Bill Summers Chevy/Olds in Fairhope Alabama. When I got transferred to NY, NY for school I drove it there. After school I drove it to Louisiana where I left it for two years while on Alaska and picked it up when I transferred to Corpus Christi TX and there I lived until present day. Had to sell it. Body needed a restoration and couldn't afford it at the time but it ran like a bat out of hell. It now in Dallas.

    Goodday Steve,
Finally I got to see your entire video uninterrupted & what a absolutely great story.
    Both you & I are same vintage, I am a 1970 child.
My very first car was a 1970 VG Valiant 770 Hardtop with a 318 Fireball V8 a Aussie Mopar.
Bought of the original owner for $900 back in 1988.
Sold & bought plenty of plenty of Aussie Mopar & all of them V8's.
Moved to Adelaide buying V8 Mopar's in Melbourne drive 750 kilometres overnight to Adelaide & sell them triple the price.
Adelaide is where Chrysler had its manufacturing facility to manufacture Mopars at Tonsley Park & Adelaide was the home of Mopar Australia.
Imported parts & engines from the states had it all going.
I can relate to your story.
Now I own a 1970 VG Valiant 770 Hardtop again but with the 6 cylinder Aussie Hemi.
I was actually on Adelaide this weekend pass because my Muscle Car Club was having its annual show over 300 cars it was a great day Sunday.
No Oldsmobile's & if I wasn't a Mopar Guy my second choice Oldsmobile all the way.
Great story & look forward to more.
Love to share with you & your family picture of all things Aussie Muscle Cars.
    Cheers
Louis Kats your number 1 Fan in Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺 🇺🇸 👍 🙂
