Thought episode 9 was pretty dope. Especially the last 20 minutes
After reading the article from the interview on Sara Hess, I can understand why Alicent's character is so all over the place and why Daemon's love of his family is being diminished. It just seems like they are trying so hard to make the audience empathetic towards Alicent when in reality the Dance of Dragons is really a story about a weak king who allowed himself to be surrounded by vipers who exploited his family issues to place themselves in the line of succession.
I'm not even a team black simp but I will admit that they've done too much to try to humanize the characters to the point where they just feel flat, and that goes for team Green and Black. I hated both sides in the book, but now I'm just meh on both and I honestly care less

They do seem to be going for more nuanced versions for every character bar Daemon "Equal parts light and Dark" Targaryen.

The way I took the Alicent thing in the Green Council is that she was upset and shocked that the plots were behind her back - she thought she had been one of the main players getting her son ready for the throne. She felt she had power and that the men were acting on her will: she said as much to Larys when she said her father would be loyal to her. In this moment shes put in her place - she is as much a pawn as her son, she really is in denial that her fathers ambition overrides his loyalty to her

I actually do think its in character for book and show Criston to be obsessed with Rhaenyra's rejection, contrary to Tony and Grey. There are stories all the time of men in the real world who are obsessed with, stalking, and outright murdering women who reject them.

I thought Alicent's surprise that they had been plotting to usurp the whole time was confirmation of what Rheanys said about her doing the mens bidding. Also, says how little they think of her not to include the "queen". It was a revelation of how little power she has. Also, i could imagine her exasperated face to mean "you guys could have saved me the worried shitless nights of plotting on my own all these years.".

I'm actually glad that the show doesn't portray the greens as mustache twirling villains. Aging Alicent down and changing the relationship dynamics between her and Rhaenyra. I don't thinknthe show us exusing her at all. It's simply showing her motivations. Gotta remember GRRM said these two canons are one unto themselves. For that reason I don't really consider Fire & Blood when watching. Also, keep in mind Fire & Blood is an in world history written by Targ loyalists particularly those whom favored the Blacks.
Alicent was only upset because they didn't let HER in on the SECRET. She was yet again on the outside of her own council.
Yes, I think Alicent is upset because she thought she and her father were partners against Rhaenyra and Damon, until she found out that he never considered her his equal and that she was still just a pawn, even after she became queen.

Glad to see you back. I was afraid you’d had a Covid relapse. My husband has a theory that the “beast beneath the boards” may have multiple meanings and one referring to Aegon. When Alicent asks Helena where Aegon is Helena immediately says it almost as a reply, and they did make a point of showing the twins dragging him out from under a boarded structure, (altar?).
It’s Aegons bastard. The kid that was under the boards at the fighting pit. Watch the scene, fits perfectly

When it comes to Alicent, I think the show is really stressing her righteousness as how she behaves. Ever since her meltdown at Driftmark, she felt she had lost the higher ground, that is why she got all religious. It happens to also favor her side to get closer to the faith, it is a political move, but she excuses it to herself, as just searching for redemption. Then when Viserys ruins the green’s coup by dragging himself to the throne, to defend Rhaenyra, Alicent looks defeated in that scene and almost resigned from trying to fight against Viserys’ wishes. That is why at the dinner her attitude had shifted. Then comes the supposedly misunderstanding. I think she knows Viserys didn’t really say: “I want Aegon to be King”. She knows but he said enough for her to lie to herself about it and once more, having gain the higher ground. Alicent is not well
Alicent is a hypocrite she does all the horrible things but acts like the most innocent women in Westeros if you look closely you can understand this but the casual audience takes it on face value and think she is what she says she is
Yup it is stressing her self-deluded righteousness. Qhich ia great qnd makes for a far nuanced and tragic character than the "huar is pregnant"F&B alicent and certainly more nunaced than the slay queen girlbossified way rhaenyra has been portrayed so far.
Honestly her character is so weird to me i liked her at the start but she just got worse like she was so horrible to Rhaenyra and judged her for things that aren't even that bad yet she's defending her RAPIST son and bestie murderer ? What i don't like is that she thinks she's right , if she didn't act so righteous it would've been better but WHAT DO I KNOW alot of people seem to think she's 100% right and innocent while Rhaenyra is the bitch in the wrong lol

I think Alicent was looking for a reason as she’s not a murderer. The book is written by second hand accounts but this makes me believe Alicent was truly torn and was looking for a sort of out. I truly believed she squashed beef with Rhynera but this dream kinda of gives he more motivation. I think it makes her more human

Otto definitely threatened Alicent when he told her she reminded him of her mother , “in certain light, you remind me of your mother” -the fact that Otto says this after Alicent bested him. I’m telling you, Otto in that moment reminded me of Lyras Strong’s infamous quote, “What are children, but a weakness... This is Otto playing the GOT, and we see something similar from Daemon. Cue on Daemon’s face expression as Jace interrupted D’s war planning. It’s subtle, but Otto made those same subtle facial expressions each time Viserys pissed him off by going over his head (decision wise).
just because a character is grey doesn't mean the writers don't know what they are doing. being grey is more realistic than everyone being psychopaths.

Grace Randolph starts posting the same night it airs & everyone else follows the next day or so. By Tuesday it’s old coverage, By the following Sunday it’s ancient. & it’s a waste to me cause homegirl is way more educated in the lore that those who post faster, but by a week later the topic is exhausted

OH MY GOD!!! You just said what I've been thinking for ever. Daenery's was told her baby had scales and a tail just like the baby Rhaenyra lost!! I've wanted to see a Dragon-human hybrid!! That would be so cool!
My idea about Alicent was that she was angered at being left out of the plot because she wanted to full control and the men folk went ahead and acted without her input.
The absence of Mushroom is putting the show at a disadvantage off the bat. Mushrooms account of the events make up a lot of F&B.
It’s better without him, since it gives the show writers more freedom to fill in gaps, makes connections, and expand the story beyond Mushroom’s admittedly unreliable narrative.
They just introduced the septon so there's a chance mushroom will be there.
Alicent has a lot of nerve with her judgmental attitude toward Rheanyra's sexual exploits, when she is letting Larys use her for sexual purposes, even if it is just feet.
Lol how is that even comparable? Rhaenrya fucked around with her uncle and then when he told her to get lost she went and banged a knight of the Kingsguard just because she had blue balls.
Alicent suffered humiliation and allowed a man to objectify her in order to obtain important information. She got no pleasure from it. Rhaenyra was a whore. Alicent was not.

Also I don’t think The green queen was upset about her counsel plotting to put her son on the throne as much as she was upset that there were discussions, plans, plots, and moves being made in regards to putting her son on the throne that she was not involved with, like They didn’t respect, or trust her enough to keep her in the loop and involve her in this council and it’s plot.

Was My absolute Favorite. I like Otto and Alicent
I think Otto would’ve tried and succeeded putting Aegon on the throne even if at first Alicent didn’t support him. She was looking for a reason to change her mind and I think Otto and Criston would’ve both been telling her why it needs to be Aegon and they would’ve convinced her if for no other reason then I don’t think she could’ve sentenced her father to death for treason which is what would’ve happened if he openly tried to stick Aegon on the throne

I think its more that Allicent feels very slighted by the fact that she wasn't included in the pre-Viserys death coup plot for being a woman. This episode is FULL of "Allicent is constantly being used, manipulated and condescended to by all of the men around her, she doesn't have any real power of her own, she thinks she can attain political control via her proximity to powerful men but she simply can't" themes. Finding out they plotted behind her back is a hurtful reminder of the fact they don't trust her as a political equal.
And then she's having to let a creep like Larys crank his hog to her feet (well, moreso the thrill of demeaning her) on the day her son takes power. Like, this is--according to her thought process--when she should FINALLY be at her most powerful, but these pig men STILL exploit her body for their desires & they STILL don't take her seriously. She has this unbelievably bad day, just one event after the other screaming in her face "EVERYTHING RHAENYS SAID WAS RIGHT, DUM DUM" lol.
But she's dedicated her entire life to toiling in service to patriarchy, she's sacrificed all of her own personal happiness to make men happy & her brain is CLOGGED with justifications that doing so makes her A Good Woman despite it making her MISERABLE, so she's like "Even if I wanted to turn back now, it's impossible. So instead I'll just take out my frustration on Rhaenyra with my deranged internalized misogyny & live off of scraps of validation from Mr. Cristin 'Nice Guy' Cole"
I get the feeling that "the prophecy " was simply a means to justify herself within her own mind. This way she can hold up her own self made righteousness to do something she would've probably done anyways.
