What caused the joint sitting of Parliament in 1974?

On August 6th, 1974, a historic joint sitting between the Australian House of Representatives and the Senate chambers took place in Parliament House. It was the first and, to this day, the only joint sitting ever held for federal parliament. These are the steps that led to this moment.
