    Another great review Sam. The photography for the ‘up-close’ views was absolutely superb; most people wouldn’t look at their models that closely. It really showed off the paintwork on the 08 as outstanding. Those brass fragments - seems like the worm gear is grinding itself away? Implies a meshing issue. Fundamental flaw; send it back. One small idea - there is a gadget that measures the speed of model locomotives - it sits by the trackside and has a couple of IR LEDs in reflective beams and can give a speed readout in scale mph. When reviewing you could see how closely the model scale speeds reflect the prototype. Accurascale claim to gear their models to represent scale speeds, be interesting to check those and see if other makers are anywhere near realistic.

      If you are interested in Hornby, the inside of locomotive is very clean. Even looks clean from Heljan. Surely the factory have not control their quality of environment and also Bachmann's QC have not done a right thing.

    It’s a very old model now. But when it came out it was an incredible model.
    Still a good model if you can get it at good price and still a better model than Hornby 08 when price is put in. I think that’s why Bachmann have never retooled it because a new one would be around the same or more than the Hornby and the boot would be on the other foot.

    Sam, the only 8 pin decoder I could find to fit was by Gaugemaster, I know you're not old enough to remember the old Toton hump shunts, or Colwick marshalling yard, but the 08 would regularly shunt 50+ loaded wagons about! At Toton they would push the same up a slight gradient and the wagons would go down a 1 in 16 slope at the down hump and 1in 20 at the up hump. Obviously the loco wouldn't go up or down the hump. Great review Sam.

    Fantastic review Sam! I have the freightliner orange version of this and love it. A couple of things - the metal shavings aren't an issue in mine, so likely an isolated issue. Also, the loco can't fit a bachmann 8 pin decoder! I picked up a rake of 3 Dapol HIA wagons today for £26 each, they're fantastic! I highly recommend them to you!

    Hi Sam.
    I’m not sure if you take requests on what to review next when there’s no new models to cover, but if you do, then I would suggest sometime reviewing the Heljan GWR 47xx 2-8-0. I wanna see if I can get one, but I don’t know if it’s worth it as if I do get it, it would be the first train model I’ve bought, whether it’s new or used(I’m entering the hobby, very slow start but oh well). I know that Heljan hasn’t made them in a while, so I understand if that’s not possible. And if you don’t take requests, then I apologize for not being aware.
    Either way, keep up the videos, man.

  • @lellopesce
    @lellopesce 10 месяцев назад +1

    Initially I was going to point out the possibility that the missing weight is to make space for a speaker in the engine, but after looking at the inside (and yes, all those shavings were quite surprising) and the 8 pin decoder socket, could it be the chassis metal is a different alloy (ie. cheaper) hence the lighter weight? As usual great review.

    Hi Sam, what extra infomation about this type of locomotive!

      The NS version was a smaller wheeled earlier version of the 08. It was closer to the numerous British Railways 11 class. Other countries also had versions of the 11 class like the Victorian Railways of Australia with their F class shunters.
      Searching for the Wikipedia on British Rail 11 class has much more detail on the export models of the 11 class.
      Roco made models of the NS and VR versions of these locomotives in HO scale.

      A stay alive is a very small electronic capacitor which stores energy for the loco to call upon if there is a loss of power, for example dirty track, crossing points etc. they normally give the loco about 10-20 seconds of power in the event the loco loses the current from the track 👍

    You know, Sam, the officially well-known B R class,O8 diesel-electric shunting locomotives certainly were very shockingly surprisingly obviously the official inspiration for several of diesels on the Island of Sodor's North Western Railway starting with Devious Diesel himself! Plus, over 950 of 'em were built in exactly 5 different B R workshops with an official,O-6-O wheel configuration as well as the official electric transmission as well as an official English Electric 6KT diesel motor that officially produces 350 horsepower as well as a specifically wonderfully officially official well-known 20 MPH top speed!

    • @maidsandmuses
      @maidsandmuses 10 месяцев назад

      I noticed that; looks pretty poor I would say, not helped by the coupling rods being so visible picked out in yellow! Looks like only one axle is driven by the motor, the other wheel sets are driven through the coupling rods. That's not a good arrangement if you need that much slack in the coupling rods to allow for imperfect quartering/machining. With that much slack on the coupling rods you would really want all gear sets coupled primarily via low slack accurately machined gearing, with the coupling rods being more cosmetic rather than actually used for transmitting the motion.

    I would've thought this was ex-FGW blue, as HNRC has a bright orange livery (as per the 20/3), or a paler orange and light grey (as per the 07) .
    I have an even older bachmann 08 in BR blue, having a small PCB instead of the slightly later version with the 8-pin socket.
    I prefer my hornby 08, a newer tooling than the bachmann one but still getting old and still no lights. The hornby 08 is more powerful and quieter, and more reliable with wiper pickups to the wheel backs. But frankly, for the price hornby are charging, I expect cab and directional/shunting lights, a built in stay-alive, the current standard for DCC (so next18 in this case), and a pre-installed speaker at a minimum.

The Hornby model is a generation ahead on detail, however. No layout should be without one (or 10, in my case). Finally, you reviewed a modern Class 08 diesel shunter from Bachmann and it is decent which is all I can say. Hornby's version of this locomotive looks much better Sam. By the way, Hatton's has a few Class 08 diesel shunters from Hornby on their website.

    Keep an eye on your dapol Western. I bought mine at a similar time to you and the motor is starting to slowly die. Mine probably has more miles on it than yours but still keep an eye on it for the motor slowly crawling to a stop. Then you have to shut off the power and the turn the power back up again. 😊

    I nearly did get myself a Bachmann 08, but if I'm gonna be honest, they don't compare to the level of detail that the Hornby ones do plus i'm not a fan of the overscale coupling rods.

    Strange that it has a URL for Needlers. (10.05) Was 08502 still working into the 90's?
    Needlers are still in buisness, but that domain name is not in use so not a crafty bit of promotion.

    I'm glad to see that the 08 by Bachmann is still relevant. Mine is the BR 4 all black version, bought last year.
    Its only real great flaw is the price. GBP 50 less on the RRP would have been better. Overall, it is an aging model, with serious points to correct (lack of lights, no bearings for the axles, 8 pins DCC socket), but you have more than correct performances.
    Honestly, why not a retooled version ? Or a new model from another manufacturer, maybe Dapol ? I'm in for a BR green version in OO and N.

    I’ve got a Bachmann Class 70 that is run with my Hornby LNER steam as a “headend banker engine”, and the detail and interior lighting is amazing. Too bad Hornby hasn’t included cab lighting at least on their 66’s (because Hornby has never cataloged a class 70).

    This one is MUCH more detailed than your old one, Sam, despite not having the ladder(s) on the nose. Quite a bit more printed warning placards and such. Grab irons fitted on the engine-bay doors, and lamp brackets on the front and back. And the livery is much more colorful. Remove the side rods and buffers, and this resembles some of the small “Plymouth”-type switchers here in the states; some with 2 axles, and some had 3. 😊

    Interesting review Sam. Great looking loco but not without its faults.
    Did you notice that the couplings on this loco, when coupling to the wagons took place, didn't appear to be at the right height? The coupling rod was raised, even though the rod on the wagon was perfectly level. Just thought I'd mention it. Best, Pete.

    I thought these 08s were from new molds, the only let downs I see to this model is 1. Half cab u need to cut away drivers lower half in order to fit a driver in. 2. The 8pin dcc is bloody stupid considering it's an up to date model.
    The hornby 08s are very nice detail is just as good as Bachmanns 08 except the cab area on hornby model is fully painted and detailed in side including driver seats, control handles, hand brake etc etc

    Personally as long as companies do not charge to much for simply made models, I do not mind picking up a simple model and just adding details to it made by myself. That in my opinion is supposed to be one of the many charms of model railroading, not extreme detail, but just having fun the way you want to with model trains and getting creative with your layouts, locomotives, rolling stock and buildings. That’s what I do. I’m also hoping to do a review video on a Hornby Flying Scotsman train set soon, wish me luck that I enjoy it and furthermore recommend Hornby!
