I have the smart 3 as well, did not see this video in time and burned a coil in a Resilient Sounds Platinum 12D1,🤦‍♂️ had it wired to 2ohm. And about 3/4 gain. as you know that's a bit over 2krms for the subs ratings. Probably close to 2700rms.. So I'm waiting for my recone and will set gain correctly this time.. any info on the clip meter wiring? My wires got pulled off the board. Dont know what goes where

    This procedure is a very much sought after topic with amplifiers being as big and bad as they are today. It's easy to get an amplifier that does way too much for your subs and you need to turn down that amp so you don't burn out a voice coil.

    Awesome video, I have a question I was thinking about getting a 4k amp an run it at 2ohm load. My 2 subs I currently have can handle 700w rms each so 1400w. If my 4k amp is 2400w at 2ohm load could it be set to jus deliver 1400w? Reason is cuse I know I'm gonna eventually put 4 subs that will need the 4k amp. But for now with the 2 subs I have now they only can handle 700w each. Thanks alot

      High pass filter is different on a class d full range amplifier I barely crank my High pass filter up on my 8k 2ohm taramps? I running 2xv3 sundown 12s YOU have to include impedance rise also so I'm only pushing about 6 to 7000 watts maybe? On those two subwoofers and another thing my enclosure is 4.50 cubic feet at 32hertz? So it can take more power? And the bass is tighter?

  • @robertholsopple9451
    @robertholsopple9451 3 месяца назад +1

    There is so much room for error in this method IMO. There are too many variables including impedance rise. That's why I've set my amps by ear for over 25 years. I've used this method a few times to try it and there was always performance left on the table that I could hear but on paper it doesn't equate. To each their own I suppose. You did explain the method well. Good video.

    • @bassjunkie2020

    • @bassjunkie2020

      No You can use both rcas as input. But if you have 2 sub amps you can get a Y - Splitter to hook 2 amps! Nice feature! In that case use the top rca for your main then use out put rca for 2nd sub amp! Saves running 17' 0f rcas to head unit! I mean you can always buy a rca distribution block. Which with a distribution block you can run either 4 sub amp or 2 4 channel amps!👍😁💯

    • @jamesg8246
      @jamesg8246 3 года назад

      That's the only thing I do differently. Leave everything set the way you like it to sound. EQ, loudness, any dynamic bass enhancers....if you have a bass knob turn it to max output, get it all sounding like you want with the sub disconnected. Then do this procedure and adjust gain up until it clips, then back off a touch. If you do it with EQ flat and everything turned off and bass knob turned down the moment you turn anything up at all you're straight into clipping. A flat eq sounds like trash, you gotta tune it to where it sounds good.
      I use this guy's method with a scope so I'm not guessing if the output is clipping or not. You can see it. That's the other problem doing it with a multimeter like this. It gives you correct power but not clean power.

      Look your amplifier has built in eq which is low pass and high pass. You can't set eq on your head unit and your amp. It has to be 1or the other or your clipping! Do some more research. Even though your scoop might say different. Your still clipping trust me. Your coils will burn🔥

    • @jamesg8246
      @jamesg8246 3 года назад +5

      @@bassjunkie2020 You're not listening or comprehending. A low pass or high pass filter is not an EQ. I suggest you do some more research. Nobody listens to their music with a flat eq. It sounds like shit. If you set your amp at maximum output BEFORE making any sound adjustments on the head unit you will be straight clipping the moment you run anything above a flat eq. So you should tune your system with your eq first. Then with an oscilloscope check what volume your head unit clips at with the settings you want set. Then tune amp gain with oscilloscope until it clips and back off a touch. This way no matter how far you turn it up, you will not clip. I tune every level of mine with an oscilloscope and can guarantee using the method I linked to, and a oscope, you can't clip. Period.

      This is apparently not the way to set the Amp Gain. Big D and Sam Vernard from Barevids have done a thorough video on this. And Taramps even say that, the load has to be connected whilst you set the gain.
      As it has an Artificial Rail Cap, when the load is connected as opposed to the way BassJunkie is doing it in the video.
      Normally you would set it without the load. But in this instance for these amps, especially the Smart 3K you will have to get the load connected.
      Now the Question is, how would you do that, with Subwoofers, which are rated below 3k wrms?
      The answer, take it to a pro, or do the formula and get your value, play your test tone, 40hz -5db. And turn the gain up whilst your subwoofers are connected until you reach the desired voltage.
      I dont want to step on your toes man, as i watch your content alot. But with this Smart 3K, the load must be connected whilst you adjust the gain.

    • @bassjunkie2020
      @bassjunkie2020  3 года назад +2

      Not sure that is correct. Because ive had 9 Taramps amplifiers and set them like i did in video. Never had problem. Long as you set voltage to the number you come up with. Then you will be fine. I don't think it's very smart to have subs hooked up running continuous test tone through your subs. Doesn't sound like a good idea.

      Not sure you have to if your only running 1 amp. But if you running 2 then yeah Y splinters. But I control both amps from 1 NVX bass knob. I used the signal out on the Smart 3 to the audio Legion 1600 . So I can cut signal from both amps. The audio Legion has its own bass knob also. So I got it hooked up as well. That way I can turn it off and just run the smart 3. For my 4 channel amp no bass knob. But I have them hooked up using a line out convertor. I have the converter hooked behind my head unit. I tapped into the speakers output wires coming from my head unit. Cause my head unit only has 2 RCA's out puts that are set for subs. So the line out convertor works like a charm. 👍💯

    You made a video later raising the voltage to around 75v and it woke your sub up. A good sub can take way more than rated power. This is only good for SQ maybe?. what is your opinion?

    • @bassjunkie2020
      @bassjunkie2020  3 года назад

      Ok let me make sure I have your info correct 1st. You have a 600rms sub dual 4ohm wired in parallel? To the amp to make it 2ohms? You have the HD 3000 1ohm. And @ 2ohm's that amp little over 2000rms. Which would be way to much for your 600 rms sub. Like I say in the video. Go by the lowest rms 1st! Set it by the 600 × 2ohm =1200 now square root of 1200 is 34.64 volts. Now after you get that. Plug your subs back in and set your low pass and high pass where you want it. Go play a song you know that doesn't clip. Turn it up till you hear distortion. If it isn't loud enough. Then turn the gain down a little to make it louder. But for more loud bass you can turn it up some. But you risk clipping because that sub is only rated 600 rms. Some subs are under rated and can do more. You just have to know your subs limit. The other thing you can do is think about getting a xfl or something like that. They are 1500 rms and can take the 3k well. I mean atleast 2000 rms of it. Hope this helps👍😎💯

    • @bassjunkie2020
      @bassjunkie2020  3 года назад

      You don't do 600× 4ohm. Cause if you wire it down to parallel it would be 1 ohm. If its a dual 2 ohm. So 600 ×1 =600= square root 24.49 volts. I thought you had dual 4 ohm sub. But if its dual 2ohm. Then at parallel it would be 24.49 volts
