*HEY GUYS! We have always felt like our first responsibility is to you as our viewers, not to any brand, which is why we don’t shy away from showing you guys when something doesn’t go as planned. This video is an honest view of what our experiences were with this unit. We cooked the pork butt on our other channel (Pellets and Pits - ruclips.net/video/w1pJQo5giu8/видео.htmlsi=sVqLWnZYSGYxeOi_ ) and we experienced a different issue during that cook as well. This could just be a one in a million occurence, and we just got unlucky. We’re consumers also, just like you guys, so since we were unhappy overall with the unit, we decided to return it.

Neal, I don't know for sure but the problem may have been caused by the dust in the pellets. I have a Oklahoma Joe's pellet bucket that has a sifter in it and I use it to remove the dust. Since I started doing that I haven't had any problems whatsoever. Not saying that's the problem just guessing. I have a Z Grill and that solved my problem, just by sifting out the dust.

I think that initial white smoke is the anime you don't want, you want it to be that almost blue that you can't see. I had a camp chef and they tell you to start it and it will smoke a lot, and that initial smoke will have that bitter taste you don't want. I think we have all had great BBQ that was perfectly smoked and also the BBQ that tastes like just, smoke. . am I right on that?

My smoker doesn't have sensors. I just use chunks of hickory from a tree that I cut down and split myself. It works pretty good.

Definitely see if you’re able to remove that pellet grate as others have said. I’ve had the same issue on numerous pellet grills and just have to check it every so often during the cook to move the pellets around. It does take away from the set it and forget aspect of using a pellet grill but, it’s not a deal breaker once you understand it’s just part of the cook. Great video providing a true experience and not just the positive sides of the product!

For $1200 bucks of my hard earned money the grill should work perfectly out of the box. I shouldn’t have to stir pellets but rather pour them in and start the grill. I’d take it straight back to the point of purchase for a refund. Stop buying Chinese junk!

A cheesesteak dip for the first cheesesteak griddle cook? I don't think so! You gotta do a cheesesteak next, and then breakfast! 😄 Another one I'll have to try!
Too cold to griddle here now. Had 6F this morning! Just not happenin'!
I had the same thing happen to me on my Pit Boss smoker on New Years Day trying to finish my pork butts because I didn't add enough pellets and don't like to add a bunch because the pellet chute is a pain to drain! I just finished 2 hours later than planned.

Neal, I ran my Yoder out of pellets smoking a Thanksgiving turkey. Now I make sure the hopper is full before a cook. I don't like that hopper design though. When mine ran out I didn't have a single pellet left in the hopper. That is what you should expect IMHO.

    • @TheFlatTopKing
      @TheFlatTopKing  8 месяцев назад

I 100 agree...you dont expect to run out of has 1/4 of a tank...plenty of pellets were in there...just didn't funnel correctly...My Lone Star is the same way....

That's what we call the Funnel Of Death......I get it on my Camp Chef but has never been an issue but I always start with a full hopper (20lbs) of pellets and only burn about 1lb per hour and I move the pellets around every time I check my cook

Just to add my own data point regarding pellet smokers. I have a first gen Rec Tec 640 pellet smoker. I once tried to use Lumberjack Apple Pellets in it and it almost lit my whole hopper on fire.
I called the owners of Rec Tec and they confirmed that soft fruitwood pellets like Apple can cause what was happening, basically the pellets were burning too slow, that the fire pot was filling up and catching fire to everything up the auger before they could fully burn.
Luckily I was home and awake and could turn it off before the fire reached the hopper.
This may not happen with all pellet smokers, but it’s a word of warning.

Awesome video once again. First thing I would do is remove that grate at the top of the pellet hopper so I could reach in and help the pellets get where they need to be. Funny story is a guy I work with was cooing 10 pork butts for his wedding reception so I borrowed 3 smokers from friends of mine. One was a brand new pit boss that had the same style screen and I took it out and he never noticed when I brought it back. That was a fun cook. Two pit boss, one old one new. A tailgate traegar and my old lil tex 22 traegar and a green mountain. I was totally impressed with the GMG. That thing held temp to the exact setting. Traegars and put bosses swing plus/minus ten degrees.

The problem is your pellets have drawn moisture being outside. And they kinda form a brick.
It the moisture in the air.
That's all. You just have to swish them around before you use them and then keep a eye on them, to make sure they are funneling in.

I mean this with no disrespect....I have received a few comments like this..I completely disagree..I have and had several pellet grills...this is not common with the ones I have or do use. in my mind the whole point of a pellet grill is the connivence...if I have to come outside to stir the pellets...whats the difference between that and a stick burner..I do understand the amount of pellets could have hurt it...but the first time was well over 25 percent...plenty enough for a 20 min cook time

The pellets bridged over the feed and formed a void blocking the supply to the auger. That would be my guess.. I've seen that in several other applications. Icemakers, grain wagons, anything gravity fed, etc. I've seen it in my Traeger grill. Bang on it, or poke something at it to break the void. It's not an often occurrence, but it's not a rare issue either.

Over night smokes usually are a very low temp and don't use a lot of pellets. I have a smaller Traeger and it has no problems of 8 hours unattended smoking.

Neil, I feel your pain as I had the same issue with a burnout in one of my first cooks. Here’s what I found out: When you fill your hopper too full, “tenting” can occur - that’s when the weight of the pellets causes them not to fall evenly into the auger. If you look at the pellets, they are uneven lengths. Too much of them on top of each other and they cause an igloo-type effect. Once they start to fall unevenly into the auger, you’re screwed unless you notice right away. My pellet smoker also doesn’t have a low temp/low pellet indicator. I have learned how far I can fill my hopper up in order to avoid this condition, and you will too - it’s all about experimenting. Wish it wasn’t that way, but I’m also not paying thousands of dollars for an error-free smoker as I’m not a competition smoker…. Also found that on mine when I dump pellets in, I stir them around once I’m done dumping - looks like you can’t do that with yours as there’s that diffuser in your way - if you can remove that, I would. It’s unnecessary and in the way of you manually managing your pellet hopper. Prob some safety thing as at some point a door got their finger caught in the auger….. 🙄🤦🏼‍♂️

On the pellet smoker: the first thing I did was take that hopper grate off. I like to keep my pellets straight across and it will prevent the dam you are talking about. I’ve never heard of a low pellet alarm. Must be the newer models. I’ve had my camp chef and Trager a couple of years.

Going to try that dip in my Cook Shack smoker (insulated and holds the desired temp well in cold weather). Don’t have a pellet smoker.
We have a pellet stove in the bedroom that holds a 40# sack of pellets. It feeds the entire sack to the feed auger until it’s completely empty. I think it does so because the walls of the hopper are a steeper angle than that Blackstone. What you might have to do is ensure that your hopper remains on the full side or you’ll have to stir the pellets in the hopper frequently for a continuous MANUAL feed as the pellet level decreases.

I’m definitely going to make this. Also, I have a Z grills 7000 series and I’ve never had a fire go out. The one thing that I thought about when you restarted your pellet grill was a potential explosion. Pellet grill explosions are real and when you start your pellet grow as I’m sure you know you should leave the lid open. That probably applies to a restart as well.

Weber had this issue with their first pellet smoker. They came up with a fix kit to fix it. Later versions had a more slanted hopper.

Although I completely agree… what would you do if you cooked over or longer cooks. Only my opinion is that’s the idea of a pellet grill turn and and leave alone. Having to manually play with the pellets takes the fun out of cooking. My pit boss, Traeger, and lone star have not had that problem

What you experienced with the pellets is what I call “the cone of death.” There’s plenty of pellets in the hopper, but they stop feeding into the auger. The only way to prevent that is to keep the hopper full of pellets.

That looks awesome. I can't wait to try this. Looks like Blackstone should have made the pallet hopper walls a little steeper. Probs give it a tap or 2 when the hopper runs low. Appreciate you Neil.

This video is a great example of why you always need a backup plan when smoking/grilling. Things happen and if you don't have backup plans you can ruin what you're cooking. This is why I personally have several grills, and as you showed, your kitchen oven is always a great backup as well.
