  • For more than 20 years, a group of men who grew up in a Mississauga neighbourhood kept a secret that, they say, altered the course of their lives. The boys fell victim to a youth group church leader and counsellor who preyed upon their innocence.
For the first time, they’re speaking publicly and seeking accountability.
The former youth leader at the Church of St. Bride’s, who was previously convicted of sexual assaults on young boys, is now being sued, along with the Anglican Church of Canada.
    Caryn Lieberman reports.

Religion uses shame to control. It always has, which creates the conditions for silence for abuse.
U can't pray away abuse, and there is no religious context to remedy this kind of abuse besides praying.
So the victim is left feeling like it's their fault. The shame prevents the healing. Anger masks pain.

When you are being abused it takes awhile to acknowledge what happened to you and to deal with the fact that it was wrong and wasn't your fault. This is normal.
I got bullied for 4 years at my employer. They made fun of me. Stole my stuff. Abandoned my projects. Poisoned my coffee. Then told people I had a health problem. Spread rumours I was pregnant. Called me crazy. Claimed I had a problem with authority. That it was my fault people didn't like me. Nobody wanted to hear my side of the story or help me. I contacted the police. A lawyer. The HR department. I kept silent about it for like 5 years after I left (9 total) because I was told I was "supposed to". It took awhile to realize it wasn't for MY benefit. They gaslight you and try and convince you that they are hurting you because its your fault. But you have to step back and look at the laws. The community and societal rules. People keep their mouth shut longer if they're dependent on their abuser. For financial support, for job references, for volunteering hours. When you break the ties and find a safe place you start speaking out. Finding a safe place is what takes a long time.
Its brave to speak out. We don't want these people to continue hurting folks. They don't deserve to succeed for hurting others. Good for you man.
I think in my case it was racism. That I was abandoned because there was no 'profit' in trying racist foreigners. The lawyer told me until we know for certain the financial cost that this is going to take a toll on your life you can't really sue for damages. Well....7 years later I lost my home and career I'm out 600k dollars (value on my home I lost plus lost wages). Any lawyers want to take up my case now?

What does the e and o insurance and whatever “standards “ or “regulations these orgs claim to meet” - look like? The sense of entitlement and reactive, rather than proactive responses to things like this, is one of our recurring deficiencies.

I can imagine waking up to a life where my investments are effortlessly multiplying while i sip my morning coffee. My expectation for 2024 that markets starts to broaden out more and my interest rates keeps rising when i invest. How can I safely invest my $800k? I was advised to diversify my portfolio among several assets such as stocks and bonds since this can protect my portfolio for retirement, but don't know where to start

It's crucial to have a well-thought-out strategy and not make impulsive moves based on short-term market fluctuations. Patience and a long-term perspective are key. You should consider a market expert to guide you.

True, A lot of folks downplay the role of advisors until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for license advisors and came across someone of due diligence, helped a lot to grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $95k to approx. $870k so far

Weak pastors can be found in any church cuz Satan catches them in their weak moments of their life ; and Satan always pursue people who have closeness to God.

I think a notable difference between our white colonized culture and traditional Indigenous cultures is our commodified survival...and with that a vast amount of sexual predation, rampant crime, and a domino effect of sin. I think we should compensate kids parents to stay together more often and to contribute to solutions...as way to many people who sign up for positions of trust are not trustworthy. The Permaculture technique called 'Companion Planting' is analogous to human community development...we could create a simulator video game where kids and adults can create solutions to ensuring safe housing, clean water, healthy food, quality education and full health care for everyone, while planning future development to be in harmony with the Earth and with each other.
