It's good to see that your Orthodox tradition uses alcoholic wine. As an Anglican Protestant living in Northern Ireland, we must also use alcoholic wine without exception. In our tradition, people who are experiencing 'alcohol difficulties', Communion in one kind, i.e. bread only, is sufficient. Thank you, for an informative upload, Father 👍👍👍
Wine needs to be used inorder for the concecration to be valid. When protestantism created a new church they rejected apostolic succession and rejected transubstantiation, thus they're communion was invalid. This is why many protestant Churches will use grape juice today as protestantism continues to move away from the timeless practices of Christianity.
Hi. This is important. Because of this, I know eastern orthodoxy is a false religion. So Greek Orthodox use wine without exception? I needed to know this. What about stumbling blocks? The Bible said we should avoid things that make our brethren stumble. The example is meat sacrificed to idols. Is it OK to eat meat that has been sacrificed to idols? If your faith is strong enough than yes, you may eat meat that has been sacrificed to idols. However, if you have a brother to whom the idea of eating meat sacrificed to idols is a stumbling block. In this case, a Christian should avoid eating that meat. So they do not cause their brother to stumble. In the spirit of this message, therefore, if a brother has overcome alcoholism, and they come to church. If strong drink if alcoholic wine will cause that brother to stumble. Obviously we should refrain from alcohol, lest we cause that brother to stumble. Therefore, to you people, your man-made traditions are more important to you than the Word of God. Your devotion to man made traditions is so important that you would rather cling to your pathetic traditions, even if it causes a brother to stumble. In this way, you are in a cult. How does it feel?
@@br.m The Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ shall not cause anyone to stumble, and denying it to someone is ultimately denying their life. John 6:53-66: Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down from heaven-not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.” These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum. Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a [m]hard saying; who can understand it?” When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, “Does this offend you? What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.” From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Nobody believed that the Body and Blood of Christ was just a symbol until this 1500s. I would call this idea a man-made tradition.
@@br.m This attitude that even one small sip of watered-down wine *will* make a recovering alcoholic relapse creates a sort of social obligation to relapse. You're fixing it in their head that if they come close to alcohol, they have to drink, they have to relapse. But I bet you don't warn recovered morphine addicts to keep away from painkillers that contain codeine, do you? Also, you insult the communion by comparing it with "meat sacrificed to idols". Yes, I know that's what the passage says, but at the same time you're making light of what Christians believe the communion to be. And here's a question - d'you know what *is* a man-made tradition? The Bible. Humans wrote it. The Church created it. Christians wrote the words down and then used it to teach and remind each other of what they believe. You don't get to assert that one of the lynchpin rituals of the religion is a man-made tradition without also acknowledging that the other things you put so much stock in are also man-made. If you can say God is behind the Bible, you must also say God is behind the communion, since that's what the Bible itself says.
@@br.m because of your ignorant comment, it is so obvious that you have not even watched the entire video before jumping to your own conclusions. This issue is clearly addressed from 3:39 in the video. The fact that the amount of wine given in the spoon is very minuscule, and is diluted with water, and is truly the blood of Jesus means that it will not cause an alcoholic to stumble. You want to know what is really a man made tradition? It is the protestant innovation of using grape juice for communion. It has no basis in the historical practice of the Christian faith. Jesus himself miraculously created and partook of wine, not grape juice.
Father personally recommends St. John Commandaria (Cyprus, Keo) although a lot priests also use Mavrodafni. (Just to note, we are not sponsored for promotion of any particular brand).
Greetings Father Maggos! Did you know America's only dedicated sacramental winery is on Hemlock Lake, just south of Rochester? O-Neh-Da Vineyard produces not only wine for the Roman Rite, but also for St. Tikhon's Monastery for Divine Liturgy. We would love to be of service to your faith community.
I beg to differ. Having worked in wine for more than thirty years, one of the great wines from Greece, from Santorini, is Vissanto which, possibly became Vin Santo when brought into Italy, the wine from Santorini, made from at least 51% Assyrtiko (no doubt a 'new' legal requirement), a white variety, with the addition of others, particularly Aidani and Athiri, both white varieties. It was once, more than likely, a Communion wine in the Greek Orthodox Church and can be very deeply coloured. Yes, it is sweet. Additionally, the watering down of wine was traditionally Greek in antiquity, as the very word 'krasi' indicates, a 'krater' being a vessel for that purpose.
In California there are some excellent communion wines that have better color and flavor than the Greek ones which are mostly just sweet, but lack body and depth.
Why can't it be either? Like why can't you have wine OR grape juice. Didn't it say fruit from the vine, not wine specifically? So it could be alcoholic but it does not have to be?
Father Maggos will be answering your question during one of our upcoming Orthodoxy Questions Answered Summer Specials. Keep an eye out for those episodes Thursdays nights in July!
Alcohol is a stumbling block to my brother so I will take grape juice with him. Truth and the word and the Bible and Christ are more important than your petty traditions of your pagan cults.
This was already addressed in the video. And remember that Christ turned water into wine, not grape juice. You talked of man made traditions in your other comment. The use of grape juice in communion is a man made protestant innovation and has no basis in the historical practices of the true church founded by Christ.
