I feel like this video perfectly encapsulates Tommy’s greatness. It encompasses almost all of his techniques, from his lightning-fast arpeggios, to his unique showmanship, to him turning the guitar into a damn drum set. This is what I show people when they’ve never heard Tommy.
He can do it all from A to Z, whatever he happens to feel like doing at the time. He's as sensitive at crafting a ballad as he is a wizard at the fireworks stuff. Gong to see him again in three weeks, can hardly wait! The man owns the instrument and completely fills the stage.
You're right, I showed this clip to a friend who didn't know he sang, and though she knew of his guitarist reputation, had never seen him play... she just kept looking over at me in total shock ... and just burst out laughing when he did the bass and drum bit. It was very satisfying 💜
every time i want to look again his clips, i say to myself: " this time, pay attention to that lick in particular", but 99% of the times i lose my mind into his music and can't really pay attention to what he's doing... he's just incredible
Well, that was just gorgeous The only thing I can see that he loves more than music is sharing it with others Gave me a big smile throughout - and that drum/bass thang at the end! Silk and cream baby
At the time this performance took place, I had been doing some IT-related work for Tommy's then-manager for a number of years. During that time, I attended many performances, and became friends with both of them. This performance was from a PBS-sponsored event that actually spanned two nights. The resulting DVD has become quite a collector's item. My cat destroyed my only copy, but I'll leave the ugly details out. Anyway, I was there, and so was my Maton 808TE guitar. In fact - it's the guitar on the stand directly in front of Tommy's amp. It remained on that stand for both nights (it was not played during the concert). I left it in the green room before the first show and momentarily panicked when I went to retrieve it and it went missing. Thankfully, someone let me know PBS borrowed it to use as a stage prop because they didn't like the way the amp appeared on camera. They asked me if I would rather they didn't use it, to which I replied "Please do not move it from that stage, thank you!" As I hold it today, Tommy's autograph above the neck has started to fade from wear, a sign of many hours of joy and perhaps a few moments of frustration in pursuit of joy. Watching this clip reminded me of the wonderful time we had in San Diego. What a great city! Got to see the zoo, the bay, and a few nightspots as well. The recently restored Balboa Theater is a work of art.
"more or less" "better or worse" is the virus spreading through the online community of music. people probably never to rarely saw live shows. it's probably due to american idol and others, but also due to our school system, business world, video games, sport leagues... there are winners and loosers everywhere and society is trying to reflect it onto Art. I have seen so many guitarists' performances and I am a guitarist myself, I should say , that Tommy is totally on the different level comparing with any other guitarists in the world.
This guy is crazy good. I discovered him just a few years back from a friends advice. He goes from 0 -100mph in a split sec. Chet Atkins was really good, this guy is top of the game. Thanks to Tommy, so many times I laugh , sometimes I cry, I play guitar, keys, vocals, jazz trumpet. From all aspects of music, I just smile when I here tommy. Damn he`s good. I wish I had the time to practice and go back 30 years. He`s amazing!
First saw Tommy about 20 years ago at a NAMM convention concert at the Wild Horse in Nashville. He was in town to cut his first recording there. Amidst well-known artists including one of the last appearances by Carl Perkins, Tommy came out as an unknown with just a guitar and a stool and brought the house down!
beyond world class.......I'm like, Holy wtf !?!, every single time I see/hear him play..........much better than I ever thought humanly possible. & I'm well aware of allot of "top-shelf" stuff.

Its a pointless argument and there's no right answer since "guitar" is such a broad term and there are countless genres and styles so you can't even compare. It's all great

Funny ...... watched me a ton of Tommy vids and never realized until this performance how he completely comps the Django runs up the neck. One of the true marvels of musicianship in my own lifetime. The talent of this guy is just ridiculous.
His Harmonic/harp playing is second to nobody! The dude plays drums like a boss on his guitar! Most people don't even have a clue about complex harmonic picking! Great Composer too!
No doubt there are others who play as well as Tommy Emmanuel and some might say there are those that are better. But, he is not just a breat guitarist, he is also an entertainer who loves what he does and you can see he gets great joy from it, as does his audience, and when you put all that together, that's what makes him the best.
Great way to put it. Each has been given a special gift and we are blessed to witness it. One other thing I notice about Tommy though is that, where all these guitarists connect with the audience in a musically intimate way, Tommy also connects in a uniquely personal way. I've never seen an accomplished guitarist have so much fun on stage with both his music and his viewers
What a great band he has backing him up, and what a great arrangement! I love what the percussion section does, and that bass player is absolutely bitchin': The part where he sings with just the bass-player walking, and the drummer playing with brushes, really swings! (Oh... wait...) Addendum, a year later: It's official... Among his other accomplishments, he is also the greatest Country Blues Player, ever.
That old guitar has been played a lot.... and you can sure hear it ... that wood is so well seasoned... even though he's been rough on the top it has a sweet tone..
Tommy’s hard to beat! Saw him live in Florida, the man is really to hard to believe, the best there is in my opinion (and Chet Atkins as well) Chet said Tommy was the “Best finger picker in the world” that’s good enough for me!

This is a gift from God. No amount of practice can make you this good. There’s definitely Divine intervention here.
I think Tommy Emmanuel is just where humanity has peaked
