First of, thanks for watching! Here's a few things I would like to add after finishing the video! 1. I saw some stuff about Ian Ousley on twitter, I'm not an expert, I can't speak out on behalf of anyone else so keep any comments civilised. 2. It's okay if you don't agree with me, these are just my thoughts and opinions and its okay to think differently! 3. I forgot to make this clear in the video itself but it's okay for an adaptation to change things from the original if it serves a purpose, but if your changes make the overall narrative worse I believe its fair to call it out. 4. If I pronounce any names weird I blame that I'm swedish...
Exactly! He had a huge presence despite going faceless for half the originals runtime! Such a shame too since he's one of the best antagonists in media imo!
If you're going to make Ozai more than a cartoon supervillian, make him a walking red flag of emotional abuse, gaslighting and everything the real monsters do.
@@berengustav7714 like telling your son you were lucky to be born? Like Ozai isn't cartoony in the slightest up untill like Soakka taunted him after he lost his bending abilities.
I'm glad to not be the only person that was upset by the use of Leaves from the Vine. Once I saw that scene and heard that music I knew that this live action version would never be anything more than just a show. What interest me most about the show is how non-fans of the original would react. I ended up showing a friend the live action, since they never knew about the original. They couldn't stomach past episode 2. We are now going through the whole original and they can't get enough.
I'm happy even those with no relation to the original can tell Netflix's adaptation is not on the same level. And good on you for getting them on the original! Thanks for watching!
I was so mad at how much was changed and how different it felt. And how stupid everyone was. That I didn't even notice leave from the vine 😂 which was probably for the best tbh. I didn't know it was in there until people finally started coming out with content challenging all of the "I love this it's amazing" bs
Thank you, everyone else online seems to be unable to understand why Iroh is such a problem here. I haven't directly watched the show, but I've seen so many clips I've got a pretty good idea of what they did to him. They removed his strong morals and pacifism that he gained after his son's death in a battle he ran. He kills so easily, encourages Zuko to ignore his conscience by forcing him to hire June, acts embarrassed by his affection for Zuko, and generally is more like Zuko in Book 1 of the cartoon than Zuko is like Zuko. The only way Iroh isn't like Book 1 Zuko is that he isn't prone to yell as much. It's like they sped up Zuko'a character and dialed back Iroh's to an earlier state. Now Iroh actually has more room to grow than Zuko. What is the point of having Iroh here at all?
this is such a good explanation and it baffles me that people still consider live action iroh to be a good depiction of him. he's nothing like iroh, but when it comes to people discussing which cast members portrayed the characters best, people will list iroh even though he's a clear far cry from the original and doesn't hold any of the same values or philosophies let alone the same character.
The original show beat every adaption to the punch with the Ember Island Players episode. It nails every mediocre retelling to the wall. Every weird decision, inaccuracy, and erasure of subtlety in acting that every subsequent retelling is right there.
I HATE that the first time they show Aang, he flies... Only for them to _rarely ever_ use it again. It ruins the whole show, because if Aang can _literally fly_ without even needing a glider, then why doesn't he do it more often? He could solve a ton of problems just by flying away or flying out of reach. Not only can he fly, but its _his character introduction._ Its the first thing we see him to, which tells the audience that this is an important trait of the character... And yet he just doesn't do it for the rest of the series.
I’m thankful for your perspective of Iroh!!! No one else has seemed to mention any critique of his portrayal, while I was thrown off. For me, Iroh felt too on-the-nose and they made it very obvious that iroh was on the good side. In the original, iroh was more mysterious and nuanced until his view became more obvious in season 2. It’s similar to how they won’t make zuko fully a villain. Aang saying “you couldn’t have always been this way” feels out of place, since zuko hasn’t earned that perspective from Aang. And I can’t fathom why they’d make iroh kill zhao instead the perfect poetic justice of the ocean spirit killing zhao for murdering the moon.
I couldn't have said it better myself! I'm really dissapointed in the way Iroh was portrayed. I guess all we can do is wait and see what becomes of him and Zuko in seasons 2 and 3... Thanks for watching it means a lot!
The only thing i don't like is, they showed Ozai and Azula character too early in the screen, especially with Ozai, the mysterious faceless character was what made them interesting and scary in the cartoon.
The thing about OG Katara is by the time she gets to the Northern Water Tribe; you've seen how hard she has worked on her bending. You also see that she is a deeply passionate person that can be hardheaded and stubborn. She has a fire to her, and her trigger is being belittled. When she is fighting Paku you get mad with her, when Paku is belittling her you feel offended for her. Something that unfortunately the live action is lacking because we don't get enough time with the characters and their personalities are unfortunately watered down to the point that when they get their big moments they just fall flat. The great thing about OG Zhao is that he is calm, cool, collected, calculating, strategic... you almost feel like he is 2 steps ahead. He is an intimidating presence, but his trigger is his ego. The reason why in the deserter he fires at Aang not thinking about the fact that he just burned down his own ships is because he lost control. By that point Aang had gotten the better of him over and over again and his ego was bruised, so when Aang was taunting him, he attacked out of frustration not thinking about any potential consequences. The live action Zhao came off almost like he was a sniveling corporate guy that was willing to throw people under the buss for a promotion. I understand the direction they tried to take his character, but I unfortunately felt disappointed with the execution
So true about Katara! It really felt like they failed her the entire way and the cathartic end of her arc in season one was turned in to a boring fight! The thing about Zhao, at least to me, is that he feels quite human! The performance includes both his calculated side and his ego although it's not as well explored since key scenes are removed. But I really like how he feels like a real human who would, just like you said, throw someone else under the buss to get that promotion! Thanks for watchingand the thoughtful comment! It means a lot!
@@TurtleKun I do definitely understand that he felt human. I do understand the decisions made to make him that way. I (somehow) managed to watch up to that episode in the live action, and what I noticed was that it looks like they initially DID try to keep the emotionlessness as part of the lore. Aang’s line delivery while he talks (for a good portion of the scenes) with Koh are deliberately monotone and his face is expressionless. That leads me to think they shot the scenes planning to stick to the original idea, but then changed it later and just never re-shot those moments. Which is a shame because you can tell the potential it had and how it wanted to hold true to the OG. (Like I said, watch that interaction again and you’ll notice that it’s only at the end where Aang starts to get expressive.)
Oh my goodness gracious! I knew it wasn't great but I had no idea it was... I dont wanna say 'bad' but its.. Its confusing how they managed to be okay with putting this out there because it doesn't take a genius to recognize the good and bad of what was and what is

That means so much to hear! I've seen quite a few reviews and none of them have fully covered all my issues so I'm happy I was able to do that for you! Thank you very much for watching!
@@TurtleKun also i can't imagine you actually yelling "fuck you" several times! you always seem so soft-spoken and just... calm. i guess this song's hurtful implemenation really shook you bad... i can't say i know much about the song...but wow... really sucks too that netflix seems to become more and more hated with these kinda incidents...
@@N3Selina honestly I cried while editing that part since I rewatched the original cartoon episode. That song hits incredibly bad for me for some reason 😅 but you can find the full tale of Iroh on RUclips to get the full 4 minute context!
I'm surprised you like Kyoshi, considering what they destroyed to do it. First and foremost, they took Aang's avatar demonstration, something every one of them has, his "force of nature" sphere, and gave it to Kyoshi. Thus, when he presumably does it in season 3 (if there is one), it'll be a ripoff of Kyoshi, not something of his own creation. Second, they've literally ripped away all of Roku's story. Roku is Aang's primary guide, and not just because he was the previous and that's basically the tradition. It's also bad because the world Aang inherits is DIRECTLY Roku's fault. He was lax in his duties as Avatar, letting Sozin amass power under his watch, and eventually leading to his betrayal at the hands of Sozin when defending from the volcano. It destroys the symbolism, and ruins their story. Yes, Aang did contact and get advice from many Avatars, including Kyoshi, but none of them were his guide like Roku. Third... The show is taking away so much from male characters. Aang loses his drive and guilt, Zuko loses his obsession with honor as his driving force, Sokka loses practically all his masculinity (he's no longer really obsessed about being a warrior), Iroh loses his pacifism and ends up being far too violent, Ozai loses his cruel malice that drives EVERYBODY on their journey, and Roku loses his role as guide and his chance at a redemption of sorts for his failings as Avatar. Taking all this away causes the show to basically fracture and fall apart. Yes, the female characters lose a lot, too, like Katara losing her motherly attitude, and her anger, but a LOT more male characters were damaged in this than female characters. I don't think they can fix it going forward. There's too much damage, too many fractures and character changes. Too much deviation from character journeys and world-building.
Maybe I worded it poorly, I did find the inclusion of Kyoshi and Kuruk to be positive because we got to see a larger variation in the previous avatars, this does not however mean I actually liked the way they were used. Both Kyoshi and Kuruk make the show worse than the original for multiple reasons, like you outline! I would have much preferred they either completely removed Roku's scene and introduce him in a later season and give Kyoshi more of an impact, or just not have given her any extra screen time. And honestly at this point I'd preferred if the show just was never made 😅 When it comes to more male characters being ruined I'll just say that there are more male characters in general, had their been an equal amount of women and men they'd all been ruined. Kyoshis inclusion has nothing to do with this, it's just that the show is bad in comparison to the original.
I haven't watched yet because I can't be bothered to pay for Netflix, although I had considered getting it for a month just to see it. But after watching your review I definitely wont be watching and this show will go the way of that movie that doesn't exist. What people didn't realize was the animation was out in 2005 and many of the story were unrealistic, in the live action it was more accurate that the old lady was the one who explain everything rather than a 14yr old girl who never leave her hometown in her life.
I couldn't pass 2nd episode, was too cringe tbh.
Honestly understandable! I just had to know how badly they fumbled the bag 😂
You made very good points to be honest, I’m glad to be a new subscriber now
Thank you so much, i appreciate that a lot!
And honestly at this point I'd preferred if the show just was never made 😅
When it comes to more male characters being ruined I'll just say that there are more male characters in general, had their been an equal amount of women and men they'd all been ruined.
Some of the things you talk about I could probably look past but their use of "Leaves from the Vine" is absolutely disgusting and infuriating! Excellent video, thank you for such an honest review!
Thank you so much, I've been a bit frustrated with other reviewers claiming that scene with "leaves from the vine" being a good addition. All I can say is ju go rewatch the original 😂
@@TurtleKun I rewatched the original recently for the first time since my son was born and I was a total mess for a good hour. Knowing they used the song in a scene without the same emotional resonance is extremely upsetting.
@@spacemanc8932 yeah, I ended up weeping while editing watching the tale of Iroh! It so sad to see it be thrown in this way!
You can watch it for free on streaming sites. That’s where I watched it
14:20 i gotta say that i remember rooting for both zuko and aang in the original show. otherwise i agree with your points. good video and great editing
That's understandable, maybe I was just to young my first times watching the show but I thought he was scary! Now after having watched season 2 and 3 many times I do kinda root for him to some degree, but I still don't want him to capture Aang!
Thanks for watching it means a lot!
@@TurtleKun I didnt watch the Original run of it (bcs i was 5 at the time) i first watched it when i was 11.
And it wasn't a rooting for zuko in a way of "YEAH GO CAPTURE THE AVATAR" But more in the way of " Show zhao who's boss and Find a new way to regain your honor!"
Because i think even in the first couple of episodes they manage to make him seem like a good guy, that was forced to do something he didnt want to.
Its that kinda sympathy
27:34 literally my thoughts
I have to agree with you
Im just glad months I'm im not the only one with major problems with this show.. when reaction channels first started watching. They were all in love with heart eyes. And I was so confused and felt so gaslit 😂 Cause I felt like I was the only one who hated it. Literally I was so bored. I love long multi hour content. But half way through each episode I was both angry, and so bored I wanted it to be over.
Also, I definitely cant agree with Zhao. He felt like a lost.. frat boy who was trying to be cool and just couldnt pull it off
And I would have enjoyed Kyoshi a lot more if she hadn't basically taken over for Roki. And was... Honestly? Kind of an ass to aang for not reaosn? And, I just cant with thr superhero landing.. its avatar, not Avengers..
As to luten's funeral. Even having the background knowledge. Even knoeing other versions of these chsracters. I felt absolutely nothing. A lot ofnproplr say it was one od thr better oarts of the show. And while it mught be... One od the more well eritten parts, for hoe bad the writing is.
I honestly dont think it fits at all for the reasons you said. We dont know these people.. there's a reason we dont get mych sbout luten until later seasons.. we need go actually.. becomr attached to these characters. And i was so angry, that i didnt even notice leaves from the vine playing in the background. I disnt realize it until it was brought up in a video I was watching. Then I was angry about that too 😂
Even MCU made fun of superhero landing, like, 3 years ago.
the reason Iroh didn’t sang Leaves from the Vine is because he wanted to pay respects to Iroh’s first voice actor Mako Iwamatsu he didn’t want to mock his song so he didn’t want to sing it
@@PaulEli_GamingYT that's the actor yes, but someone else put the song in! I don't blame the actor one bit, but the director and producers are to blame for such a, for me, disappointing usage!
Agree with some of your points, disagree with others, but damned if you didn't get a like because someone FINALLY called out how terrible the implementation of Leaves From The Vine was.
@@DragonElixion Cheers, yeah I'm still upset about that and how I haven't seen any other essay talk about it (some even praising it).
I DIDN'T ENJOY THE MOVIE VERSION. THE ORIGINAL WAS 100%
Saw the movie in theaters as a kid and even then I knew it was bad! Very dissapointing seeing a masterpiece ruined like that!
Thanks for watching!
Coold video, nice points, but i got your video in recommendations just because i absorbed all other videos on this topic, so it feels kinda lackluster
Haha yeah I get that. Like I said I'm quite inspired by a lot of the videos already out... Guess that's the issue with being slow 😅
Thanks for watching tho, appreciate the honest thought!
@@TurtleKun still subscribed tho, maybe i will watch your videos on the next topics before another's, delivery feels good
@@triksters24 thank you that means a lot. I don't usually make videos about current media so hopefully it shouldn't matter!
Yes haha, YES (I have been waiting for this)
Hope it lives up to expectations!
Have you ever compared the adaptations of "Mo Dao Zu Shi"?
@@ThePrincessCH I've never heard of "Mo Dao Zu Shi" before so I haven't compared any of the adaptations... Most likely won't either but you never know! Thanks for watching!
I have to disagree about the funeral scene. It’s my favorite in the whole show. Perhaps it’s because I love the show so much, but it was one of the most touching I’ve seen
That's completely understandable, it does strengthen the bond between Iroh and Zuko!
Once again I personally don't see how it adds to any of the characters but maybe I'm affected by my relationship to the original show! Either way I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and I hope you enjoyed it!😊
@@TurtleKun No, you're right. For people who weren't already familiar with the Iroh's grief after losing his son, it did nothing. I'd only seen the first season before watching the Netflix show and I felt nothing, literally nothing (except a little cringe over how sentimental they made Zuko - I know he was always good at heart, even compassionate, but Zuko as a sweet, emotionally supportive boy? No).
@@missAlice1990 I...I think he was sweet before his mother was forced to abandon him, honestly? He did abuse a duck but I do feel this was the influence of his sister, and his mother corrected him at once.
People only get emotional during that part because they remember Leaves from the Vine from the original. Without that its nothing... And with it its disrespectful.
Why are people making video essays saying this adpatation is bad even though it was well-received by fans and is getting two new seasons. stop hating this and make a positive video pn it please!
As a huge fan of the original I'm very disappointed in the adaptation, but this is just an opinion piece after all.
It's okay if you liked it and I hope we can enjoy season 2 and 3.
As to why we're making negative videos, maybe watch one and you'll hear our opinions and thoughts 😅
@@TurtleKun I watched them, and you misunderstood what made this adaptation perfect. everyone else on the internet likes this show, and these video esssays are BORING!!
@@DisneyGirl2004 hey feel free to make a video explaining what we all get wrong!
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
It's just a personal opinion at the end of the day and I'm happy you enjoyed the show! 😁
We make videos because we care about the original show. If you can't see that I'm not sure why you bothered watching this at all
@@cinderblockstudios It's because most people loved this new show from what i see. It has a 7.2/10 on IMDB and 76% from audiences on RT. you guys just want a 1:1 adaptation which is impossible..
Yawn...it was great. Sorry you didnt like it but Im excited for seasons 2 and 3. Bye. Thanks.

Yawn to you too 😊
@@jackieroberts2625 lol..back at yah
You must be yawning from watching the live action avatar.
@@lasercraft32 nah. Only yawning at this video analysis of it. Thanks for asking. Bye.
What people didn't realize was the animation was out in 2005 and many of the story were unrealistic, in the live action it was more accurate that the old lady was the one who explain everything rather than a 14yr old girl who never leave her hometown in her life. And Kyoshi guiding Aang instead of Roku was also not something to be mad, they were all avatars so it didn't change much who appeared first in the scene. These were the good change in the live action. The only thing i don't like is the cast of Mai and how they change Soka misogynistic character
You missed the point of the old lady and roku
