Man, this series of interviews are amazing. Thank you for giving us the chance to take a look this deep into the development process of an absolute classic. I'm happy to see that the documentary is getting a very good number of views. Neil from RMC has recommended the documentary to his viewers a few times now, on his channel and on his podcast.

The pause from both Dave and Ron when you asked them about the possibility of making MI3a really sticks out now that we know the truth. Interesting that Dave didn't want to do Tales when he was asked, that's something I didn't know. I still think he did a great job building on the world despite those fears. Really glad he's back on Return too.

Legend. His work on Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle is also immense, and then he went on to be one of the most important people in the rebirth of the point and click at Telltale Games, was lead design on all the Telltale Sam & Max games I believe (all brilliant), worked on Back to the Future (outstanding!), the immensely brilliant and influential Walking Dead game and of course Monkey Island's return to form and worthy sequel (sorry Escape) Tales From Monkey Island.
This man's contributions and influence on the gaming industry are rarely fully recognized!

Wow that was great! I wish the interviewer were less timid as I think it confused Grossman some but overall lots of great information came out here anyway and lots of interesting and specific questions were still asked. Certain things are now known and really gets into the nitty gritty of that one time and place of the development of MI1. I was surprised Ron Gilbert put his pencil down in that interview and I wonder what his thoughts on that situation were.
Also Dave Grossman is always really fascinating when he talks about designing adventure games and he is able to concisely put how the puzzles work. The commentary that is on the special edition of MI2 he is always great to listen to. DoTT is nearly flawless and I would say the only bad puzzle is the set of keys on the inside of the door is not good for a few reasons but it’s not even really a puzzle anyway.
His design on the Pajama Sam games is often overlooked as well but also very top notch. He is truly a master of his craft.

Yeah, before interviewing Ron and Dave for these I had never interviewed someone in my life, so I was super nervous (and them being two LucasArts icons who worked on my favourite games didn't help LOL). Thankfully I was more comfortable and prepared by the time Mark's interview came around. But never mind, at least they were good interviewees.
These were never meant to be heard publicly in all honesty, that's just something I decided to do after making the documentary.
Played through DOTT this week actually, for the umpteenth time, and even now after God knows how many playthroughs I had to really think about which room the keys were in. One could easily miss that as closing doors to rooms once you enter them isn't something anyone would generally do.

@@onaretrotip Oh yeah, sorry maybe I was a little rude to you. These were great interviews, maybe the best audio format versions I've heard with these guys. You asked all the right questions to get in depth answers. Not sure why Steve Purcell didn't want to do audio but his e-mails were pretty substantial too. Ron would do some Q&A every once and a while for the Thumbleweed park podcast but those were mostly weekly meeting notes and not about his career and Monkey Island. Great job!
And Tim Schafer missing from all of this is no big deal at all, in fact I think it's better for it. He's spoken so much about Monkey Island throughout the years that some gaming publications seem to have thought it was his brain child. With the extra room now you have more stories from other people who worked on the game and have just as much to say.

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  3 года назад

@@syntheticgerbil Yes, I was really disappointed that Steve wouldn't do an interview. Tim said he'd had enough of talking about Monkey Island, and (as you say) he's been interviewed so many times about it already.

    • @syntheticgerbil

Strong disagree. I feel like there’s two fans, ones who like CMI and ones who like the first two, but the Guybrush as a character between the two is hardly the same character.
TMI tried to marry the two but I know that a few of the writers were much more prone to liking the first two like Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin.

    • @Planetdune

@@syntheticgerbil Well I do like all three of them, even the fourth though it is definitely the lesser of the previous ones (and not only because of the Grimm engine)
That said, I played all of them a lot and recently went back through them in analysis mode, trying to shed my nostalgia and bias for them. The first one did fall a bit flat, of course, it being the first they didn't have all the pieces in place from the get go and a lot needed to be established. But a lot more jokes failed to land compared to the sequels. Some parts felt rushed. The game in itself really isn't all that long but the Monkey Island section is so short. I get the feeling they ran out of time to do all they wanted with that part of the game.
The second game is a lot more mature, has more content, every part in itself feels more thought out and beefier. The characters more established and the end you either love or hate, it at least is memorable.
The third one takes the crown for me, while the ending does feel rushed and it is clear they ran out of time the rest of the game makes up for it. At this point the characters are well established, and yes, Elaine does feel different (not that she is featured a lot but hey, she never really was featured that much in any game). I agree having them get married at the end might not have been the best thing to do and the characters have more chemistry when just out of reach.
The puzzles are a tad easier than the second but do their job nicely. The humor is done at least on par with the second and trumps the first. The steal however is the atmosphere. Plunder Island is great but Blood Island just oozes atmosphere out of every crevice. The music is the best of the series as well. Of the first two the only parts that approach that level are the forest scenes in MI1 (I'm a sucker for the blue night sky) and some parts of Scabb (graveyard in particular).
Graphic wise it is very hard to fault any of them and the style naturally differs a lot between the first two and third. But IF I had to choose, I feel the third just had the edge and is the perfect choice for art that stands the test of time.
Everything above is my own opinion. I know plenty of people do hail the third as the best, just as there are plenty that prefer 1 or 2. Regardless I am not a fan of "this or that", I love all three.

@@onaretrotip Curse was an incredible game IMO (gave us the undisputed and beloved voice of Guybrush for one!) and I never skip it when I periodical replay the games. But for me 2 will always be the pinnacle of the series (and I played them in order as they came out). While Escape does fall short, Tales is woefully underrated IMO too.
Also Ron Gilbert has said on the record that he is a fan of Curse.

I like the third game and I think none of the games are bad but the first two have... A different feel to them. They will always be there in my heart.
I realewish monkey 3a was a reality but it is hard for me to believe Disney will ever late go of the rights.
