  • I was having some charging issues with my Mercedes recently, random voltage dropouts, and poor charging performance.
Oftentimes these are caused by a failing voltage regulator.
In this video I show you where the voltage regulator is on the alternator and what it takes to change it.
Here is what you need to try this:
    HELLA 004241151 Regulator: amzn.to/3V9fROr

Tom, I upgraded my alternator to the more powerful option you identified in a previous video. It made a big difference - and I can only say that because I drive so few miles with all the accessories going that charging was a challenge. Thank you for continuing to speak to the various issues. We appreciate you more than you know.
Sidebar: that fan video was purrrrfect. Viscous fan.

I too have the habit of short trips, and it is real rough on the battery especially with the glow systems big amp draw every single time.
I really enjoy making these videos and love hearing that its helping folks out.
Still not sure if refilling the fan is a good idea or not, but it does seem to have improved my AC performance, and haven't noticed any negative side effects yet. Just something that nobody seems to talk about much. Never know if thats because its a bad idea, or just because nobody knows about it.

Tom, are you aware of a fan/clutch upgrade? I'm not aware of any. I replaced the radiator, upgraded the condenser (huge improvement in AC performance), etc. but I have not found any good fan replacement that is a genuine "upgrade". We appreciate you my friend.

The only "upgrade" I've heard of is changing to the 85 model year pulley and belts, It is slightly smaller diameter so it spins the water pump and fan slightly faster.
I have one of these pulleys, but want to wear my belts out before I bother changing everything over since my current setup is working ok.
I've also got the parallel flow condenser upgrade like you already did, I need to find time to actually install it and all that.
I should do a live video sometime and wander around and look at stuff that I should be doing and get feedback from everyone on what they want to see the most so I can get motivated to do those projects lol

Thanks for a great video, I remember in early 80s you could just buy the bushing only and some of cars has alternative on a easy place to reach, it was easy and cheap fix. Unfortunately with the newer and with LOT of features , we don't have the luxury to fix them cheap you have to trade in the part, for about $30 to get another one for XXX amount. But good thing is as long theses great old cars are around and great people like you who share their knowledge and experience in a very good understandable way, with the others We are in good shape, Thanks again for your time for us all on a Sunday. Stay blessed

So many things have become a replace rather than repair product. I've been enjoying a reddit group called buyitforlife, as is true with the internet and anything in general you do have to take what is suggested with a grain of salt but there are some good products that are durable enough to keep for years!

Sorry to go off topic, but I remember watching your video a few years ago about you installing the golden rod mesh screen pre filer for your 300 D. I searched all over RUclips but couldn't find it. Please could you send me the link ? Thanks.

I'm not sure if I ever did a video about the goldenrod filter. I think I mention it in a video, but never went into detail about it. I should do that!

Hi, I changed my alternator with a used one and since then the battery light has not come on even with the engine off with the key in position two, I continued like this until today when the car has not started, and the tester shows 11.9/12.4 as voltage with the engine on, do you know what it could be?

If the alternator light doesn't come on with the engine off then your excitation circuit is not working at all, it won't ever charge like that, the alternator light is an essential part of the charging system, and it has to be an incandescent bulb if I'm thinking correctly in order to excite the alternator windings, I would check that the bulb hasn't burned out, and that the blue excitation wire has a good connection on the alternator, I believe there might be a fuse that is related to it as well

Wait, so I might not have had to shell out nearly $300 for a new alternator if I just knew how to replace this? 😭
