Left abandoned and neglected outdoors for years without spark plugs, this once magnificent machine was found in an utterly heartbreaking state.

I brought one of these in 1983, when I was 23. I still have it and ride it occasionally. Still has the fuel injection on it - most of the ones here in Australia have carbies on after the DFI packs in. Good you for getting her going and keeping it as original as possible.

I bought mine 2nd hand in about 85 or 86 and its still in the shed hasn't been started in 30yrs, best trip I ever did was Sydney to Adelaide to Melbourne and Sydney.

As an owner/mechanic of several big vintage Kawasaki’s I can say it’s the crank sensor - Hall effect sensor. They eventually go out on all these bikes and usually become heat sensitive over time so the bike will start and run until it gets hot then: poof!
Even newer vehicles are worse when it comes to the myriad of electrical sensors and complexity hey.
One of my bikes is a 1983 two stroke, no fuel injection even, I love it, it takes me back to being 18 again and it's easy to work on unlike my modem bike that's even got a fly by wire throttle.

Yes, the Kawasaki crank triggers of the era are woefully prone to intermittent failures. I had an 811000LTD that would drop two cylinders anytime it was too hot outside or whenever it rained. I had a few others that gradually failed outright. Dyna S is one low-ish cost solution for the 81-83 big KZ-J type engines (but won't easily bolt on the 83-85 GPz1100, 85-86 KZ1100 LTD, or KZ1100R without completely swapping the ignition housings and KZ-J mechanical advance mechanism on the right side of the crankcase), but be prepared to spend more to swap out the coils and wires too. The Dyna 2000 ignition system is more expensive, but it has more features including programable advance curves, and can fit the stock later model GPz style housing with minor mods. Forget about the Dyna 4000 unless your bike is only used at the drag strip. The ARC 2 is also pretty much racing only - my friend has one for his MTC 1395 cc GPz 1100 with a home built fuel injection system that works with the ignition, but hasn't run it yet (work is ongoing).

Thanks. It is definitely starting to shape up. Agreed on them being bulletproof. This is my newest motorcycle. My wheelhouse is 60’s and 70’s preferably with points, carbs and drum brakes. This one doesn’t have any of that. Been a great learning experience. Thanks for watching.

@@motorcyclerewind - I’m just puzzled how it is that people can store a bike in that way. I needed a new engine for my FT500-engined Honda CB250RS. Got an XL500S (1976) from a seller in Germany. If he’d bothered to oil up the bore and put in a spark-plug, it would have been good enough to go straight in as a runner. Piston & rings siezed solid to the bore. Bore ruined. New piston , rings and a rebore required.

This takes me back to Powerhouse Kawasaki in Kentish Town, where as a schoolboy I saw my first ever GPz1100 as a schoolboy.
The imposing physicality and the sheer size of these thongs was beyond amazing at the time, especially for those young eyes. In my mind, the size of the rear tyre was somehow beyond himan comprehension. This is a wonderful machine.
It really is. I expected it to be much heavier than it is. Only 25 pounds heavier than my cb750. Which is crazy. I rode my 1968 CB450k1 to breakfast yesterday. Initially, it felt so small. Thanks for watching and sharing your stories.

I rode a GPz 1100 UT for two years from 1987 till 1988. Remarkable bike. It was a „Superbike“ then. One of the first bikes with fuel injection.

I just bought a mint Honda 400 superfour 30 yr old and got every bit off paperwork it’s ever had including the Italian stuff .wanted to own one since I was 19 .
Its not an adventure unless something goes wrong, enjoyed this video and your attitude. I picked up a GPZ1100 new in 81 that had an earlier analog version of the FI system, throttle response could sometimes be a little glitchy, otherwise never had any issues. I bought had 83 GPZ750 new, identical styling as yours. Was a fun bike, no FI.

Awesome resurrection, back in 84 I almost bought an as new GPZ1100 but decided to opt for the super cool look of a Z1100R instead. I'm a big fan of all the big air cooled Kawa's and it's so cool that you decided to put her to use and take her on a big road trip.

The Z1100R is an awesome motorcycle. These bikes are far outside my wheelhouse but I have enjoyed getting to know this one.
I had this bike in white in the days. It got stolen (Geneva, Switzerland). I loved to drive it on the freeways, which were pretty free in those days. Great job.

You have genuinely encouraged me to get the spanners back out on the bike that's sat in my garden for the last 18 months 😊😊 one thing I will say is no matter what the project is, I'd urge everyone to spend the £2 on a simple inline fuel filter - the hassle that can save is worth it 100x over!

I bought a 2004 Ninja 500R for $500 in March 2023 … sold as not running, in three pieces …. By June 2023 I had taken it to the interior of BC 1215km round trip … ran great :) …. This GPZ has been so much fun. Newer than what I am normally into but has been awesome learning about it. Then riding it across the country. BTW: I think found the problem. Right coil vibrated loose and was losing connection.

I am a believer in the factory designers ability to know what looks good on the bike. For instance, the Suzuki wheels were too small for the GPZ and looked wierd.
The CB400A in the background is my wife's. She has that one and a CB350four.

Great video. My mate had a GPZ1100 A1 back in the day. Used it as his road bike, production raced it here in the UK did a couple of 8hr endurance races then did the Manx GP on it. The only mod he made was to take the number plate off and it never missed a beat.

😂🪄i had to add an aftermarket speedo due to me buying the wrong speedo cable. It iOS tucked into the left side of the fairing. You have to understand the first time I rode this motorcycle was on Saturday and I left Tuesday morning.

My last cheap motorcycle was a 1967 BSA 250 Starfire single with 6000 original miles and a beautiful alloy tank. Paid$500 cash money 💰 on delivery to my house and it was original numbers matching numbers original everything everything works missing one side cover but that's no big deal cuz it took it off to charge the battery. It was going to be scrapped with the lawn furniture at an estate sale and this guy bought it and he sold it to me for what he paid for it because you just wanted to sell it because I would the BSA guy. I am big on British and German motorcycles and I have a small collection of commie bikes like my Ural sidecar outfits and my jawa perak 250 two-stroke twin. Weird motorcycles like my rescue dogs just follow me home.
I am a huge fan of weird motorcycles. And an even bigger fan of cheap weird motorcycles. I think I like having to learn about them. The more I learn about them the more I like them.
Like this GPZ, it is so outside my wheelhouse. But totally appreciate what they were trying to do when Kawasaki built it.

Back in 97 i had mine done many things to engine to tune drop efi injectors put mikuni carbs from gsx 1100 i was fastest around could hit 250 kmh and i was savage on the road these days,fly bearings on crank was un fuckable

😂 the only parts we bought for the engine before the trip were spark plugs and exhaust gaskets.
A testimony to how damn bulletproof the air cooled 4 cylinder two valve Kawaski engines are. The 1983-85 GPz 1100 has all the good parts the KZ drag racers would die for - strongest crank, the biggest valves, highest flowing cylinder head, undercut transmission, strongest clutch, etc. I have two 83 GPz1100's....but only one has a functioning OEM DFI.
That’s why I say this is the best motorcycle ever made.
@@motorcyclerewind The one I have that is stock, except running a stock but re-jetted set of 81 KZ1000 Mikuni BS34 carbs, has pulled my 210 lbs carcass to over 150 mph, measured by GPS. Not as quick as the 83 GS1100, CB1100F, V65 Magna, or 1100 Katana, but give it room to stretch its legs and it will gradually reach and hold 150+ and slowly walk away from all the above 1983 horsepower kings. I've never tried to find out what top speed is on the one I have that still runs the OEM DFI, though - that one burns copious amounts of oil and ran noisy since I bought it. I'll probably just swap the DFI over to the nicer carbureted one and use it for spare parts (It's in rough shape all over, and has the entire front end from a GPz750 Turbo on it).

Regarding finding the electrical fault i once had a Varadero with a similar problem and by chance i could start it in the pitc 53:06 h dark. Found small arch like sparks inside one wires leading to the ECU. Found an internal wire break making partial contact. But could only see it in the dark....hope you solve the problem.

The fault that shut us down at the end was the coil for cylinders 2&3 was loos and shorting out.
Of the Japanese bike manufacturers, it's by far the smallest. Every bike they've ever sold, even the cruisers, are good bikes. The GPZ 1100s are awesome bikes.

Nice work! This might be blasphemous but it looks pretty slick with the GSXR USD forks and swing-arm. I also appreciate wanting it to be period correct. Do you reckon the GSXR parts would have really negatively affected how it went down the road?
Yes the swing arm hit the frame so know rear suspension. Not fun to ride. The front suspension would have worked but not without completely fabricating a upper and lower triple tree. The one on the bike did not allow for me to turn the bike around in the driveway.

This motorcycle was surprising more comfortable than I expected. This is also my first ever long trip. My longest one day was about 250 miles on a 1964 Honda Dream 305.

Bikini bikes need a come back. I’ve got one. All the benefits of having a fairing’d sport bike without cooking your meat and two vegetables on a hot day in traffic and roasting your bank account when you drop it.

Reminds me of my old red GPZ1100 in the UK when I was in my 20s. I use to ride it to the Hot Dog stand on Chelsea Bridge, London every Friday night and then burn it down the M4 motorway to Heston services and our group would spend the weekends riding around Kent and even sleep on the beaches at night. Miss those days. In a 'straight line, this monster would beat every other bike I came across. Never had an issue with the DFI, just the bends. Holds a special place in my heart. :).

Back in 98 I bought a wrecked. 95 Suzuki GSX-R 1127cc, I restored it and rode that bike for 12 years, it had 6000 miles on it when I bought it, had 43000 on it when I sold it in 2010. I didnt want to sell it but, got to old for that sportbike riding position.
I ride a 2010 Honda vt1300 sabre now, but I do miss that 136hp that the Suzuki put out.
I have been riding since the mid 70s and have owned around 25 bikes over the years.
Watching you restore this bike brought back memories of my Suzuki Gsxr 1127cc.
I have always been a fan of japanese bikes, especially Hondas.

I owned the 550 version of this motorcycle brand new in 1983. Loved it and always wanted the 1100. Great job so jealous.
That’s awesome I like the 550’s but I LOVE this GPZ!!!😂 To be fair it is outside of the normal motorcycles I like. It’s too new and I’m not interested in going fast. But the more I learn the more I like.
Excellent job on reviving a bike that really should be saved. I bought a 750 GPZ in 1984 because my doctor told my wife that if I didn't find something that I loved as much as I did work, she would not have me much longer. That bike literally was a live saver. I wish we could have heard that 1100 GPZ at full song.

I had one of these 23 years ago. I bought it second hand from a dealership with (thank God!) good warranty. Unfortunately it had the same kind of issues as yours. When everything worked, it was a beast with wheel spin in 3rd gear on a wet road if you went a bit too wild on the throttle. When I had to turn the bike in for repair the 4th time, the mechanic told me that they ran out of options and offered me to trade it for a Yamaha FZR 750 which I did. A great bike that ran without any issues until I sold it 2 years later.

The GPz1100-B2 was the first big bore bike I ever rode. Sooo much fun as an 18 year old.

Great score .. I wish I could get one for free . Those old 1100 motors were bullet proof .I had a GPZ 1100 and replaced the fuel injection with Z1000J carburetors after it left me stranded in outback Australia. No more problems after that .

I explain it in the Q&A video. I left for the trip on Tuesday AM. The first time I rode the motorcycle was the Saturday before in late afternoon. At that time I realized that the speedo cable I had purchased was incorrect. No way to get another in time. I added another speedo to the left side of the gauges tucked into the fairing. I learned to drive on a 83 Gpz1100. Probably wasn’t the wisest way to start but survived. Bought a new Gpz 550 and had a lot of on Kawasakis since. Respect on the awesome rebuild.

I owned a 1984 GPz550
/ AKA zx550A1. It had same frame-mounted half-fairing as your 1100. My 550 was the LAST year they ever made GPz550. The next year, they came out with GPz600 Ninja (with the 16" front wheel).

Watching this video brought back good memories, and nightmares from 1992. Had an 84 1100 GPz, loved it, but it had the exact same demons yours has; 3500 rpm lean spot, quitting for no reason, coming back without doing anything. Possessed. They did not like headers. Only a few years ago had an ‘82 with stock exhaust. That one was was more reliable, but still had a lean stumble time to time. Was ready to find another until the scene where you were left stranded. All good fun.
Thankfully the DFI has been trouble free. The coil vibrating loose at the end is what shut us down. Have put another 3,000 trouble free miles on it since. Thanks for watching.

Even though I watched all the episodes, once you took it on the trip, I kind of forgot how trashed this was at the beginning, with that bathtub of water in the crankcase and all the rest/rust. What a resurrection.

Oh dear, what a bike! One of the most beautiful in my opinion, elegant, racy, big engine! A friend had the same one but had repainted it in green and white, Gaudier-Genoud style. Splendid ! Something was dripping from my mouth every time I saw her... I had a 600KLR and had the same failure, I changed the ECU. But I had no injection! Well done! Cheers

I have a 81 kz1000 model j and an 82 kz1100 shaft driven bike that I would like to restore and your venture with this GPz has inspired me to do just that because since getting my first brand new bike in 2006 I haven't lifted the covers on the older bikes. @@motorcyclerewind Yes I had the GPZ 750 turbo, 1984 model. Had it from about '91 to '95. Samr colouring, slightly different with a full lower fairing and cowl. Most comfortable riding position, seat, and just a sublime ride on the open road. As soon as I saw those original wheels go back on, the snail cam adjuster on the swingarm, the memories of wrenching on that thing in the early hours came flooding back. My late wife adored it too, we went everywhere together on it.
Yours has now entered the category of SURVIVOR rather than abandoned.
I personally would ditch the exhaust as those race cans tend to cause leaning out problems. Unsure if a ECU flash can even be done on that model now, so closer to stock exhaust back pressure and flow would probably ease your lean stumble.
Keep on with this project man. its worth it.
@@motorcyclerewind Funny thing about old memories. I too had issues like this. It turned out to be crap from the interior of the tank blocking up the fuel filter. I was always replacing the filter. I'd investigate rust layers in the tank, maybe the old shaking nuts n bolts about in the tank to scour its interior clean, then a tank liner product.

Thanks Paul, this was such a great trip/adventure. 2 quick things for perspective. #1. Longest ever ride in one day was 250 miles on a 1964 Honda 305 Dream. #2. I rode this motorcycle for the first time in Saturday left on Tuesday. So unprepared. Sometimes all you need is a positive mental attitude. 🙏🏍️
