The role John Stones is playing might be another milestone in the evolution of football tactics. He is turning into sort of a libero, but of course with modified out-of-possession responsibilities adapted to modern game. In possession, he communicates with his teammates through his positioning. Walker understands when to run forward, Rodri knows where to hold, Gundo sees when to come deep or push the last line from Stones' movement. Position is a communicative element and Stones has become an excellent rhetorician.

Gotta give it to Pep, as his introducing of a defender taking a position at the base of midfield to create the modern "box-modfield" was a tactical masterstroke, now being copied by so many others.
This in referrence to Stones having played from CB instead of actual DM.

    • @Herosennin
      @Herosennin Год назад +9

      @@konzzaThat's not a Pep idea.
Koeman basically player like this for the Netherlands, but instead of Stones and Rodri taking turns, Koeman always went higher up, whereas the DM always anchored.
There are a couple teams that played like this in different forms because not every libero is made equal. An Italian libero for example is an entirely different role as the Dutch or German libero.

  • @RaymarFootball

I believe Blanc to be the last “true” Libero as back in such a formation strict era, only guys like him and Beckenbaur really had the freedom to play like they did. Football is mainly positionless and fluid now, anyone in the back line can act as a libero

"Libero" in italian (or latin) means "free" and transposed to football means what you described very well: a player with defensive role but with freedom to build the game and progressing on the pitch. Laurent Blanc was indeed a master on that role and it was awesome of you to remind us who watch him play and for the youngsters to learn what a quality player looks like.

  • @TheOutlierToday

I’d say the role really only existed because the game back then was very strict with formations. Now, everyone plays very fluidly. I probably had the most hours in single player in FIFA 2004, but right now eFootball is the way to go and you don't lose your cards every seaason, so we collect legends with friends for a few years already and use each other's cards in the coop mode (it takes cards from all players in the party). The word 'underrated' has been casually thrown since I've known internet but the back 4 of Lizarazu-Desailly-Blanc-Thuram IMO is truly underrated. People would quickly mention the Italian defenders but the French back four is the best since I started watching football in 96-97. It's understandable though due to popularity of Serie A and almost nobody I knew since back in the 90s even like France NT. And now even 20yo kids would quickly say Nesta, Maldini, Cannavaro as the best DFs.

I say he was the last of the “true” liberos because even in a very formation based and focused style of his era, it was really only guys like him who had real freedom as a defender to play positionless. You’re right indeed, the game today is much more free flowing and positionless, which is why having that one person who could do it was so special and unique. That's not true. It's in the word 'before stopper.' The voorstopper role has nothing to do with offensive tactics but with defense. It literally means he's the 'balstopper' who always picks up either the striker or is the first to step up at players running at the defense.
Libero is an offensive role. Voorstopper a defensive one.

One of the highest scoring defenders of all time, along with Hierro(RM), Ramos(RM), and Ronald Koeman (Barcelona). With both Hierro and Koeman having more career goals than Zidane.

I mean John Stones when fit is playing that role, so his not the last True Libero.
I've seen elsewhere your trying to counter this argument with an odd narrative that tactics were more strict, which is frankly false. It was exceptionally common for somenoe in the team to be given a free role, it was just more typically an attacking midfielder or winger. In the modern game, its very rare for anyone to be given a free role, everyone much fit into a system like a cog in the wheel. Libero is essentially just a free role given to a centre back. Typically in a back 5 system as it means you can still go to a back 4 if your caught out of possession whilst the Libero is up the field.
Libero is likely to become far more common now if the right players can be found, because its common place to go to a back 3 in possession and using a Libero rather then a Inverted full back is more efficent due to travel distance.

Yeah, this so-called "positionless" narrative he's trying to spin is odd to say the least.
Sure, in certain passages of play there will be rotation of positions, but this is natural. You adapt to where the ball is on the pitch and the scenario at hand. This has always been the case though. It's nothing new.
The idea that a team like Man City are some kind of whirlwind in a constant state of fluidity just doesn't hold true. The wingers are under strict instruction to stay wide in order to stretch the pitch. With Haaland they have a fixed out-and-out focal point up front who rarely strays from the width of the penalty area. As Stones steps up into midfield there's often a back three behind him and he then forms part of a midfield box. It's incredibly structured. In fact, football today is arguably more disciplined in that regard than it has ever been.
And that's exactly why there was so much attention given to Stones in this role. Stones is exactly the thing that he describes as somehow unique to the likes of Blanc back in the day. The one player in the team who has that license to roam freely from his position in what is otherwise a pretty rigid formation. Akanji has also played the role for them at times too. It's one thing to bring the ball out and occasionally step into midfield when the option is there, but this is clearly beyond that.
The libero role hasn't "disappeared" at all. It's having a renaissance and it couldn't be more obvious.

I think its funny how some of the players you talk about would be happy to be talked about. Laurent Blanc included. He was a very good player of course but not to the extent of the other players you covered.

Actually, the role didn't 'die' when Laurent Blanc retired in 2003. Greece won the Euro 2004 with Traianos Dellas playing all matches as Libero.

Manage to witness another libero ( i believe) in a AFF cup final 2022: Theerathon Bunmathan
    Thai footballer
he was launching counter attack like pirlo (then I figured out he was a CB or LB lol), almost every where, watching him was a bless. Maybe not comparable to European player, but I still enjoy edwatching him play lol
