  • Be Yourself - Be Music - Be Phil
What connects us, the Berliner Philharmoniker, with classical music fans all over the world is a passion for classical music. This is why the project Be Phil Orchestra is very close to our hearts: amateur musicians work together with members of the Berliner Philharmoniker to prepare and play a concert programme.
In November, the Be Phil Orchestra went on tour in Japan. A specially compiled suite from Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet was performed under the baton of chief conductor Kirill Petrenko. The programme also included Johannes Brahms’ Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra, conducted by Raphael Haeger, percussionist with the Philharmoniker. The solo parts were played by the Berliner Philharmoniker’s 1st concertmaster, Daishin Kashimoto, and the orchestra’s 1st principal cellist, Ludwig Quandt. Both works have been rehearsed by Raphael Haeger and other members of the Berliner Philharmoniker. The highlight was a concert conducted by Kirill Petrenko with the works by Brahms and Prokofiev at Suntory Hall on 26 November.
The Berliner Philharmoniker’s education programme has been made possible by Deutsche Bank since its inception in 2002. The aim of both partners is to make the work of the orchestra accessible to a wide audience and to inspire people of all ages for music and culture.

There are parents that steer their children away from music because they fear that they can’t make a living from it. These same parents might have no problem encouraging sports activities. This is fine, but music is also something adults can enjoy for life like golf, softball, swimming, etc. Also, music education creates a better informed appreciation. This is the same as that kid who plays a sport and keeps that interest and then grows into a more knowledgeable fan. Music for life!

Such a wonderful program you and Deutsche Bank have to encourage and validate the classical musical dreams of so many young musicians around the world, a world diminished if Prokofiev and Brahms were no longer performed or even known! Bravo for your role and personal commitments in helping keep that wolf from the door.
