Based on the best-selling young-adult novel by author Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games tells the dark tale of a 16-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who is selected to compete in a vicious televised tournament in which 24 teenagers from a post-apocalyptic society fight to the death for the entertainment of the masses. The reason she missed the first shot was that she wasn't completely used to the Archers Paradox of the Aluminum Bow and Arrows, She used to wooden ones from hunting.

I have a pretty good feeling that wasn't part of the script, that she actually forgot to put it back LMAO.
For me, I was walking out the door and didn't see the screen door right behind it. So embarrassing, especially when the guy I was arguing with choked on his sandwich from laughing.

What I love about this movie is the number of small things that have huge long term impact. The butterfly effect. She misses the first arrow which leads to everyone ignoring her assuming she's useless which leads to her shooting them which leads to the huge score which leads to the hope and assistance in the arena which leads to her survival and peetas survival which leads to the rebellion

The books are way better, the movie kinda sucks because the hole time you're expecting certain things that never happen. Same with Harry Potter, not only did they leave things out, but they altered them as well and added scenes.

One of life's great mysteries
This scene made me not only love the character but love the actress who played her. It was so well executed.
The two best parts:
1: Her bow
2: Her bow
I think the sound of metal clinking whenever she picks up a bow is so powerful here. As said, she was used to wooden before. It symbolizes her flaws but she adapts to what is given to her and it makes her more powerful.

Trust me as a competitive archer myself your bow is an extension of yourself it becomes a part of you the feel of the bow becomes unique to you to the point that holding and firing a different bow feels wrong its hard to explain but i can definitely see why her first shot was off and the look of confusion on her face because the feel is so wrong and so different in comparison to the bow she has used for years.
The impressive thing is how quickly she adapts and fires the next two arrows with precision that is seriously impressive it would take me at least 10-20 arrows to get the feel of a new bow and days to get the same level of accuracy as my old bow.
Yep I do archery myself I know what your saying it’s happened to me trust me my new bow used to be so hard to get used to but I’m used to it now

Even though she says only a few words, we can clearly follow what she's thinking throughout the whole scene. We can see the pride and satisfaction she feels when she makes the bullseye, then the disbelief and outrage when they ignore her. Jennifer is an amazing actress.
Agreed; I know she gets flak sometimes but I was genuinely sad when she asked to be bowed out from the X-Men Movie Franchise. That was prob her best time period; filming the Hunger Game and X-Men Franchise Movies.

Ok but that first shot's still super impressive. Unfamiliar bow, draw weight and length, and arrows can throw your aim off terribly. And she got the bow's temperament down after the first show and got a bullseye on shot #2. Still amazing imho as an archer myself

This is the most 2014 comment I’ve ever seen and I’m here for it.
In the book it explains that Katniss missed the first shot because the bow was brand new and the tightness of the string wasn’t as familiar as her bow back home. She has to shoot multiple times to get the feel of the weapon, and then hits the bullseye when she’s comfortable. They definitely show that when she feels the string, but for some people who didn’t catch that, it proves that Katniss isn’t perfect, she’s human, and 2 times out of 3 she could easily kill someone.
Hitting a bullseye at that distance is basic archery competence and not impressive

I always loved how this is almost like an audition, it really drives home that reality television mockery of the whole movie.
What I love about this scene so much is that this is real. You take it as a lesson in real life too.
People don't take notice at your success only your failures. You have to make them notice your hard work... I had that happen so often to me. Even in workplace. People will laugh at your failure and talk behind your back but ignore the times you do good or your success.
Katniss is such An inspiration she’s taught people that she can stand up to the “bigger people” u could say and show them that she’s as important as them.
This is a complete parallel and foreshadow of her aiming the bow at Coin, doing what no one expects her to do, because she acts on her own accord. Factions and the capitol cannot decide for her. My favourite Taurus.

As a former semi-professional archer that represented my country, I can say I appreciate she missed that first shot because she made a critical technical error. Looking for the arrow in the shot.

@@greenmetalbender4692 it is when you fail to maintain good form (i.e. follow through) to literally look for your arrow in the shot; tending to steer the arrow off target. It is a typical error beginners and amateurs do, as it is almost like a natural reflex to do so. It takes training with good form to overcome it.

The fact that her weapon is an arrow is so telling of her behavior and character. Despite being pulled back as far as she can go, transcending distance, she aims and flies towards her goals.

Well, in the book, katniss performed all acrobatic while shooting but audiences ignore her so that's reasonable she shot the apple. But in this film, she failed to hit the head target first, of course audience started to ignore her no matter she fixed by shooting heart afterwards. But well, i still vouch katniss shooting apple too

When you try to act dangerous, and cool-thinking, but you forget to leave the bow..
What no one is talking about is how she put just enough draw on the bow to move the apple along with the arrow to the wall instead of the arrow going right through the apple that takes skill
I think the arrow actually went through the apple but the hard plastic fletching pulled the apple out of place and made it fly with the arrow. At that moment when the arrow pierced the wall the apple by inertia slid along the shaft and hit on the tip from the back. I have seen similar things in reality.

I like that they laughed. Because it shows you how serious the hunger games is and how messed up the people in the world are. They didn't care about her second shot because in the hunger games pretty much only your first shot matters, and she missed her first shot which means they all thought she would pretty much be dead anyway. That's some in depth world building right there.

The reason the lady archer missed the first shot of arrow was that there was a deliberate fault made in the bow or in the arrow. But the archer speculated the deviation. I have seen such trick in Pakistan where small dolls are shot with fake bullets , which deviates but the street magician like archer corrects it by his experience. 2:34
