  • Watch Graham Bell put theVolkl Deacon V Werks through its paces for Winter Insight at the Snowsports Industries Great Britain Snow Test 2022.
After a two-year Covid induced lay-off, the SIGB Snow Test returned to the mountains. Kühtai, Austria, had been selected as the venue in order to guarantee a snow-sure, easy and practical option.
It was open to UK snowsport retailers and media and has been specifically designed to suit the needs of all UK snowsport retailers. It runs every year in either late February / early March, with a diverse range of brands and all the latest kit to try.
Due to uncertainty of Covid regulations within Austria, the final decision to proceed with the Test was only three weeks out. So, it was a remarkable achievement for more than 25 brands and 190 plus members of the UK snowsport trade to meet up in Kühtai.
Winter Insight’s chief tester, former five-time Olympic skier, presenter of Ski Sunday, journalist and adventurer, Graham Bell, was excited to get back out onto the slopes.
He said: “This was the 18th running of the Snow Test and it was great to be back in Kühta. The brands were all there. It was great, it was like a restart to the season again. Everyone is looking forward to next winter and the products that are available.”
Ski brands that took part included Armada, Atomic, Black Crows, Black Diamond, Blizzard, Dynafit Dynastar, Elan, Faction, Fischer, Head, K2, Line, Nordica, Rossignol, Salomon, Scott and Volkl.
Snowboards included K2 Snowboards, Nidecker and Ride.
Ski boots on show were Atomic, Dalbello, Dynafit, Fischer, K2, Lange, Nordica, Rossignol, Roxa, Salomon, Scarpa and Tecnica.
Goggle and helmet brands put through their paces at the Snow Test included 100%, Bern, Dragon, Fischer, Marker, Oakley, Shred, Smith, Spectrum, Sweet
Other brands include Alek, Carv, Halti, Montana, Ortovox, POW and Superfeet.

I have skied on Volkl skis most of my life. At 79 I would have loved this ski, but I think I am at the end of my skiing life. Unfortunately. My favourite ski was Volkl World Cup Renntiger. I now ski on Volkl P50.

Would you recommend this ski for heavier riders? I'm 6'2" 220lb not inflating that. Would I be better suited for the regular deacon 84 just to keep some more mass beneath me, especially at high speeds?

    • @winterinsight

For heavier riders this is a powerful ski that will give good stability.

how are these any different from the deacon master 72?

    • @winterinsight
      @winterinsight  Год назад

It's a wider ski & has different characteristics. The 72 is a more performance piste dedicated ski.

it looks like you were on rock hard groomers... i wonder how that ski would do when the snow starts softening up..

Much better than on hard snow.

On this snow a sub 70 carver will ski circles around the VWerks. And quietly at that.

I am sure these are fabulous skis but it's nonsensical to try and label a ski the best ski in the world. Different skis suit different conditions as I am Graham Bell knows full well, he wouldn't ski these in a world cup race now would he ? Nor would they be ideal in 3 feet of powder. It really doesn't help to make dumb statements like 'is this the best ski in the world ?'. Maybe the best piste oriented all mountain ski in the world ?

What Graham means here is that for what he's skiing right now, conditions wise, this Ski is one of the best in his opinion. Thanks for watching :)

@@winterinsight If that's what Graham means, then I would suggest that he should say so and be clear what he means. Even then, if it's mainly firm on piste conditions he is skiing (as it appears to be the case in the video), would a narrower race carver (something like 76mm underfoot) be a better option ? 84 mm underfoot is more of a wide all mountain ski, just saying.

He states at the end his personal view, at the beginning he is quoting the brand's claim. If you can only have 1 ski to do it all, they claim it's the best in the world. Graham simply agrees it's a great ski for varied terrain. Best in the world, as you suggest, is subjective. However, Volkl claim it's the best Ski in the world if you have to choose 1 ski to do it all, not Graham.
Sure, purely on piste a narrower ski might be better unless you want a ski for varied Snow conditions etc. On this test we can only test the Skis in the conditions we have at the time.
84mm is maybe all mountain for Europe, for North America is considered more Piste focused as an example.

@@winterinsight Thank you, you have now brought up the various nuances in ski testing that a good reviewer should highlight in a review, conditions in which the ski is designed for, what are the compromises inherent in ALL ski designs, what are the strengths and weaknesses in a ski, local preferences in ski width (NA vs Europe as you have pointed out), none of which were covered in the video as far as I can tell. What I saw was 'Volkl says this is the world's best ski (which is an absurd claim to begin with)' and 'hey I really like it, it's a great ski' after skiing it on a couple of groomed runs.
