  • After Newcastle United finish 7th in the Premier League the wait is on to see if Man City can win the FA Cup so NUFC can qualify for Europe again next season. There's been plenty of highs and lows this season for Eddie Howe's men but in this video we look at some of the good things that have happened after Newcastle beat Brentford 4-2.

      Last season was 10! The season before was a 10! So I'm happy with a 7 this season. I'm glad for the respite, the last two seasons have been so emotional- If Howes first 1 and a half seasons were Star Wars, this season has definitely been Empire Strikes Back.

    Finishing 7th is a miracle after the season we had. And look at the sides we had to play before Christmas, we took the best that Europe had to throw at us and made a good fist of it and survived half a season with 11 1st teamers on the sick. I'm still scratching my head how we've managed to potentially qualify for europe.

    It’s crazy how we were 3 wins away from a top 4 place! Just shows had we had our full team we would have been easily in the top 4.
    I think finishing 7th is a huge blessing as we can now go all out and win that cup.

    ian ..I have never had a rollercoaster season since we throw away the league under Keegan !!!.highlights for me PSG win + Sunderland win and the iconic picture at the end ..low points Chelsea league cup defeat + man utd defeat !!.positive for me 7th is respectable due to injuries !!..already looking forward to next season yes it been exhausting because of the setbacks we have had but that's football 8 points separateness us from villa spurs man utd Chelsea + Newcastle ..so it,s going to be tough next season to get top 4 but that's what we should aim for + trophy !!..let go and get a trophy all the best thanks for the blog !!

    As you mentioned the Keegan era let’s not forget football has changed a lot we can’t build a team how teams built teams back then

    • @iansmithfootball
      @iansmithfootball  27 дней назад

      No, but the principles are very much the same. You still had to refresh the squad back in the 90s in order to progress. That hasn't changed.

  • @homerdohyt

    Our defence has let us down a lot this season. We've wasted a lot of points this season like you said, if we didnt we could have been top 4. However, coming top 10 is still a positive considering previous seasons

  • @mjverwey9320

    22/23 season 33 goals conceded. 23/24 season 68 goals conceded.... enough said. But scoring over 80 goals is a big plus. If we get good depth in defense we'll be back in top 4 seeing as we only missed it with 8 points while setting an injury record

    • @iansmithfootball
      @iansmithfootball  27 дней назад

      Yep, tells its own story that doesn't it. Hopefully we fix it, and keep scoring lots and we can get back in Top 4

    8 more points and we'd have been in the Champions League. That's the leads we threw away at home against Liverpool, Forest and Everton. Or even in the last 3 weeks, if we had won against Everton, Palace and Man U we'd be looking at back to back Champions League campaigns.
    With (mostly) our reserves.

      I know, seeing the margins being so fine at the end (and knowing we have a lot of improvements we can actually make within the current squad already) it is frustrating to think about 'what if'. We need a strong summer, with some big decisions made over personnel to improve quality in the squad. Some players have ran their course with us I think and we need to be ruthless not sentimental towards some of them. But I am excited for next season becasue we should be able to take a lot from this season and learn from mistakes etc.

      @@iansmithfootball If nothing else is shows the limitations of the binary mindset of "4th=good, 7th=bad" with just tiny margins that could have plausibly changed a small handful of results, never mind other teams performing a little bit better or a little bit worse. Last season a mostly fit team had a relatively easy run to the Champions League without European distractions. This season we had to deal with SO many things going wrong and yet still were three pretty realistic results away from Champions League again, DESPITE the injuries, DESPITE the extra fixtures, DESPITE losing our summer signings.

  • @Mansukh09
    @Mansukh09 27 дней назад +1

    Next season the aim should be finish at least 7th and win the conference league however we all know this team always overachieves wouldnt be surprised if a 4th or 3rd and conference league win

  • @Scott-hu3np
    @Scott-hu3np 27 дней назад +1

    I'm feeling optimistic that we could finish 3rd next season provided we sign the right players to improve the side and make us more resilient as well as improving the defense so we can get back to those levels in the 22/23 season when we had the best defence in the league.
    It will be difficult but if we succeed we'll be closer to that title than any of us realise.

    One thing which I wonder about is that I think we had the same injury problems under Keegan's management. Is it a consequence of high intensity games with skilful and quick players who are kicked a lot by the opposition

    • @iansmithfootball
      @iansmithfootball  27 дней назад +1

      I think it is tbh. I think if you play such high intensity, it becomes harder to stay fit. Howe then lost the ability to rotate as players got injured and that compounded the issue.

    • @TheJDUBMedia
      @TheJDUBMedia 27 дней назад +1

      The coaching under keegan as well as the facilities led to a lot of injuries- Andy Cole was constantly struggling with shin splints and Keegan ended up getting rid of him because he thought he was a slacker! Ginola had a tab at halftime! I hope Howe is being more careful with Isak and Gordon 🤣 but I do worry that older players like Trippier and Burn visibly struggled this season

    • @SueTownson
      @SueTownson 27 дней назад +1

      @@TheJDUBMedia When the issue was raised this season it took me straight back to Keegan's time and I remember the medical teams were being questioned. I think we need depth of squad to be able to rest players especially when they seem liable to horrible tackles on the pitch. On a related issue it did cross my mind if players/teams should bear more responsibility if their player causes a massive injury to another player. And if referees are punished for game changing wrong decisions. Ah the mysteries of the beautiful game.🤣

    8 points away from a champions league place. Can't help but think that the last 10 minutes of games cost us BIG this season. liverpool at home, west ham away would have been five points straight away. This season has played out how I expected- but the fact we've had so many injuries means we've actually performed well above my expectations! Everyone including the coach has had some real tough periods and could me to out the other end!

    • @iansmithfootball
      @iansmithfootball  27 дней назад +2

      Yes that is really interesting to analyse when we lost key points. To finish 7th sounds disappointing but the context of how the season went it is actually very good and 8 points off 4th is incredible to be honest. That's despite, some of the performances being very poor and having a below average away record.
