    I pretty much knew this was going to happen. My digital 132 set came, along with a digital expansion kit, pit ln and Bluetooth dongle. I can barely make an oval at the moment, till I move some people around, but one day man, I am going to do it up right. Until then, I will continue to educate myself on this fine channel.where the advice and tips are freely given. Awesome channel.

    Love the video guys I have a big collection of Carrera 124 Digital cars and I love the fact that they need just a bit more driving skills to keep them on the track especially as I have six of them racing at the same time also I don’t get so dizzy looking at the smaller scale cars speeding round the track and sticking to it like glue .

      After running 1/24 for a while then going back to 1/32 is kind of a culture shock. I have to take it real easy for several laps (several meaning about 50) while my brain re-calibrates to the difference in quickness of the 1/32.

    My track is similar to yours in that I have roughly 100' & when I started, I was 100% 1:32. Then I got a 1:24 Car and the way my track is laid out with scenery, there were some areas I couldn't put borders in. I have some scratch built guard rails & the big cars have trashed them. I've noticed also that some of Carrera's 1:24 fit better than others. the C7 corvette, Audi R8 & Porsche 917 seem to run the best through turns that don't have borders although I haven't tried any DTM cars & some others. Love your videos but I would like to see more poll dancing in them.

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  3 года назад +3

      I hear you about the guardrails. We have some custom guardrails as well that hold up decent with the 1/32 but don't stand a chance against 1/24. Currently working on a beefier design. Also, we'll see what we can do about procuring some dancers.

    Great video. Can you summarize how well the cars run on all curves. Flat R1, R2, R3 and R4. Also on banked versions of 1 thru 4.: I am thinking about upgrading to 124 and found your video very enlightening. Thanks for the info guys!

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  2 года назад +2

      On on flat turns they run perfectly fine. We recommend using shoulders on all turns to fully realize the full performance and fun factor when running 1/24. It is a bit tight on the inside of the R1s. If you look closely at the inside guardrail at the 180 at the end of the elevated boot, it is pulled down to track level. That's because the door of the car will rub on it otherwise.
      As far as banked turns, you saw in the video that the DTMs needed a slight modification in order to clear the rear diffuser on the R2 banked turn, so if you want to incorporate one be prepared to need to slightly modify some cars. R3 and R4 banked turns will work with pretty much any car. Stay away from banked R1. Probably more than half the Carrera cars (both 1/24 and 1/32) won't work on those.
      If you haven't already, you may want to check out our series on track design considerations where we have additional info on various radii of turns. Hopes this helps.

      @@johnniehobby thanks for the quick feedback. Also I an assuming you run on stock power supply with track jumpers, no need for upgraded power supply. With that track length. Will definitely finishing watching the other videos before purchasing and moving forward. Have been racing 132 SCX digital for the last 10 years but am thinking of upgrading to Carrera 124. Doing my homework first to make sure the swap is worth it. Thanks again.

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  2 года назад +2

      @@orestkucyna5546 You are correct about the power supply. If you buy a Carrera 124 set it will come with an 18-volt power supply for use with 1/24 cars. The 132 power supply is only 14.8 volts. Jumpers will probably be needed when the track gets longer than about 60 feet. Our latest track is about 125 feet and we have two sets of jumpers (1/3 and 2/3 way around the circuit).

    132 feels more like slot car racing, 124 feels more like car racing. The perception is to feel slower, but measuring the time per turn you’ll see to be often faster! It’s just more race… But: to really get it you need to get rid off the barriers and enlarge the curves. Have fun guys!

    I hadn't thought about any disadvantages/advantages of a larger scale, just thought the bigger the car the cooler it was...lol. So the subjective question is, which is more fun and engrossing to run - 1:32 or 1:24?

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  3 года назад +1

      We lean towards the 1/24 for the fun factor, I think. Rubbin' is racin' and there's plenty of contact and more battling for track position with the bigger cars. 1/32 is still fun though, especially for putting down some seriously fast laps.

    Ive been trying to find the cars from Days of Thunder in 1/32 1/24 scale but no joy, just tiny 1/64(?) ones that barely look like cars, anyone know if there was ever a 1990s era Chevy Lumina stock car made in 32 or 24 scale I can mess with some paint and decals? Its weird because i find 1/32 scale decals for DoT cars quite often, I guess for non-slot airfix builds or metal scale models. • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  Год назад +1

      It's the beauty of digital. The electrical pickups on the cars aren't wired directly to the motor. The power goes to an electronic encoder (digital chip) in each of the cars and the motor is wired to that encoder. Each controller sends digital commands through the track over a specific ID (you can have up to 6 distinct IDs). Each car is programmed to respond to signals from only the ID to which it is assigned. Hope that makes sense.

    Happy New Year guys. I have a follow question for you when racing 124. Do you use stock Carrera Power Supply or after market? How many cars max do you run on 124? And if you use a variable PS, what voltage do you run? Do you current limit and if so how many amps do you run? And finally, do you run magnets on the 124 to limit current draw? Thanks for you info ahead of time. Your videos are typically great for understanding the basics. Orest

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  Год назад +1

      When running the 1/24 cars we use the stock Carrera power supply, which is 18 volts. Carrera states that you can run a maximum of four 1/24 cars at a time. We've never run more than that although we probably could. We run the cars stock with the magnets. No reason to remove them as the 1/24 cars already handle like they are magnetless as-is. We don't have any experience with variable power supplies, so I can't provide any information beyond that. However, there are many good slot car forums on the Internet that you could check out to find info on what voltages and current limits you would want to use.

    I'm definitely sold on the Carrera Digital. But I'm struggling to decide between 124 and 132. On the one hand I like bigger more detailed cars along with possibly more forgiving traits. But the 132 gives you more room on track and has more layout options for a given space. I'm sure there are more reasons for either scale but I'm such an uber noob at this point.

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  Год назад +1

      The good thing with Carrera, because all track is actually 1/24 scale is that you can start with either and easily switch between the two. You just need a 14.8 and 18 volt power supply (or variable power supply). We run mostly 1/32 and pull out the 1/24s on occasion.

  • @SergeRustic
    @SergeRustic 2 года назад

    Hey guys, thanks for the awesome videos its helped me a lot. I noticed your layouts are big and I have a question. If I'm running 80 to 100 feet of track using 132 cars is it better to use the 18V Carrera transformer for 124 cars or should I stick with the 14.8v transformer and use power taps. Carrera told me using a 18V transformer won't hurt the 132 cars, but I don't understand whether the 18V transformer would do 80 to 100 feet of track without the need for power taps.

      You'll probably be better off with power taps and the standard 14.8V transformer. The power taps keeps the voltage across the entire track more consistent (the more taps, the more consistent). If using the 18V transformer w/o taps, you'll have close to 18V at and near the control unit (or power track on an analog set), but could be as much as two volts lower halfway around the circuit. Therefore, you'll notice a different speed on the cars depending on where they are on the track.

    Do you have to tune up the cars when they come out of the box brand new? I noticed you sanded the tires. Does this need to be done with all new cars? You sanded the rear end of the car, what were you sanding? Again, this is a 1/24 issue more than a 1/32 car.

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  8 месяцев назад

      The tires on Carrera cars, whether 1:32 or 1:24 are more often that not totally true out of the box. Sometimes they have a slight bulge across the middle of the profile, but more often than not they have slight cupping which results in a small contact patch of only the inside and outside edge making contact with the track. Therefore, sanding of the tires to flatten the profile is normally necessary for best performance.

    Thanks for the video. I have bought Double Victory 1/24 set for my kids aged 10 and 6. What accessories would you recommend?

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  3 года назад +1

      For that set we would recommend the following:
      - straight shoulders: the 1/24 cars drift quite a bit and will drift past the end of the shoulders on the turn. Extending the shoulder down the straightaway will reduce chances of the back end of the car falling off the track. You can see a demo of that in the video titled "Building a Digital Slot Car Track - Design Considerations" here:
      ruclips.net/video/bvZHMx5KwNo/видео.html
      - track expansion set #30367 (if you have the space). It includes three lane changers and adds about 10 feet overall to track length. Best bang for the buck when adding track. More details on that in the video titled "Expanding Your New Slot Car Track - Recommended Features to Add First" here:

    Hey guys, I’ve got a problem hope you can help. I haven’t raced since early 70’s so, couple months ago I bought a carrera set and a ton of extra track. I kept it analog because I wanted to put 1/24 scale model cars on universal chassis which I did and immediately realized I needed a different power supply which I also got. The one with the 40k motor hardly moved and heated up the controller big time. No problem I kinda knew I would be buying better controllers sooner than later. So bought a boat load of more track and made it 4 lane by purchasing # 10118 wireless multi-lane extension ( analog). I fiqured I would run two lanes wired and two lanes wireless and just use the 1/32 cars until I get 4 aftermarket wired controllers. Ok so that went to shit quick! Lol. The multi-lane doesn’t come with power supply or cables ( I could have wired jumpers underneath) but I thought I would call and check and was told can’t run the wired and non wired together. Now with just either the wired or wireless hooked up outside or inside 2 lanes, the only way I can get a car to move is to depress both controllers. One controller will be the dominant one but the other one has to be halfway. And it doesn’t matter if I have a car in both lanes or just one. Any ideas? Thanks Dennis

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  3 года назад

      This is only happening when you have the 4-lane extension/adapter in the track?

      @@johnniehobby no I took it away, put the regular wired one back as a two lane and same problem. @dennisdwire5587 3 года назад

      @@johnniehobby no, never touched anything. Makes no sense. Was working great with wired controllers and one I left the track for the wired power and controllers in place then added the wireless piece with controllers I noticed it didn’t come with power supply plugs so I unplugged the power from wired controllers and plugged it into wireless controller track and that’s when all this happened. So i guess I’ll take the covers off the back of the track and see what’s underneath? Doesn’t seem like there would be much especially for the analog section.

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  3 года назад

      This is a digital race track. Unlike an analog race track where voltage is applied to the rails via the controller to a specific lane, with digital the track is always powered. The cars only move when they get the digital signal from the controller to which the car is programmed. The driver uses a button on the controller to change lanes.

    Your car might work better on that bank turn if you had shoulders on it. I haven't had a problem with my 2/30 bank even with the 1/24 Zakspeed Turbo's.

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  3 года назад +1

      The issue isn't so much the shoulders as it is the clearance under the car. I know you aren't a fan of the DTMs so you might not realize how low the back ends are. Going around the #2 bank the rear wheels get completely lifted off the track because the back of the chassis is so low. If it was just a slight interference and caused the car to drift more than usual then the shoulders would be a help, but not when the rear tires aren't contacting the track at all. So, grinding off a little bit of the rear of the chassis allows the tires to stay in contact. After that, then the shoulders come into play.

      Mr. J Hobby is spot on with the pricing. Same as what I have seen. Tho, the RW&B 'vette in the video is more (Club Special). My opinion, you WANT the extra weight, it helps with the drift (if you like that look) and it makes the borders necessary and NOT just a decoration.
