  • How versatile is Cinestill's newest film Cinestill 400D? This is the question we will try to answer in this video with a fun street photography battle in Berlin. My friend Eastblockboy will shoot a roll in his Yashica Minitec, exposing it at box speed (ISO 400) also using some flash. And I will shoot it in my Leica M6, exposing it at ISO 250, using two different focal lengths. What are you thoughts on Cinestill 400D? And which of our images did you like the most?

    400D looks super warm to me, very stylistic. I wonder if it was just the location. I can’t wait to shoot it. It might be my go-to film for warm portraits with blown out skies. Aka the light and airy look.

    Karin, your large format camera experience (as well as the pin-hole camera) was a total joy to see! I’m retired now so it was a nice flashback and reminds me of my own early years of learning and exploring the possibilities in the world of photography. Of course it is unlimited as long as your desire and passion for capturing images keeps you learning and exploring, a quest you are clearly following. After you've achieved 4x5 status, beware there are also 8x10 cameras out there or go in the opposite direction with a Minox 16mm spy camera. Thank you for sharing your experiences and keeping up the excellent work! All the best!

      Hey Ron, thanks so much for your kind comment, I appreciate it a lot! :) It's really fun collection new experiences in the photography world and sharing them with others online. I am well aware of the danger of 8x10 - I have to admit that those larger formats are incredibly tempting and fascinating but luckily the price point is holding me back and appreciate all the smaller film formats haha. All the best to you as well!

    Great review! The photo you took of the man at 3:07 is awesome! $25 per roll is insane!! I was lucky enough to get my first rolls of 400D pretty quickly also and I made a video testing it in Chicago under many different lighting conditions. This film looks super different in sunny and overcast weather but equally good in both! It's not bad at night either! :)

    Karin, I don't get to your videos often, but when I do, it is well worth it. Like the images of Cinestill 400D. The colors look warm and pleasing--much like the artist who shot the pictures. I sometimes shoot w Fuji Provia 100F and have seen it priced at $30 per roll, so I agree it doesn't seem a good value to pay such prices for one roll of film. Unsure whether film companies will argue it is due to supply chain issues or what. Enjoy your work, wit and smiles.

      Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it :) yes, some film prices have risen to an extent where it‘s hard to justify the purchase. I think Cinestill 400D will be cheaper once it‘s available in the stores. This time it was only that expensive because the shipping costs and importing taxes have been that high.

    Well, inspired by Matt Murray, I intend to shoot a roll or two at ISO 1600 around sunset.
    I was actually at a perfect location with magnificent light for that during my summer vacation, but while I did order very early on, I didn't pick early bird options, but rather went for a combination of 35mm and 120 film with expected delivery in early August, so I'm still waiting. It doesn't help, that there have been delays. Apparently the delays were made public - but mainly in newsletters with titles concerning other Cinestill products, so I never noticed.
    It would have been a more honest approach by Cinestill to send out a newsletter about the status of 400D instead of hiding it like they did, but I guess that's the American way...
    I probably won't support Cinestill again like this, but as far as 400D goes, I'll reserve judgement until I have shot the rolls I ordered back in March and still haven't received.
    My favorites from your video are the ones of Brandenburger Tor with the massive halations around the top.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  Год назад +1

      That’s interesting, I will do some research how it behaves when shot at 1600. To be honest I did not pay that close attention to the campaigne after I received my film, so I did not even know about the delays. Sorry to hear you have been frustrated, it’s very understandable! I hope the film stock can make up for that once you can shoot it :)

      Thanks for your comment! Yes the price was rather steep, but I expect it to be cheaper once it’s available in stores in Europe, so that shipping and taxes do not come on top. Regarding your question about language: yes, absolutely! There are some phrases that cannot be translated in either language which also shapes how I think and express. And also: in Germany I feel so eloquent, sometimes in English I feel like my mouth cannot really translate what my brain is trying to say which can be a bit frustrating

    Fun fact on film prices: In Japan I have to pay an average of €23 for either 50D and 800T per roll in 135. Will be a little bit cheaper in 120.
    Ordering 400D from the us made that about €25 per roll from the US and €40 per 220 roll if it is made.
    Still, easier and better to buy local 😊

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  Год назад +1

      Oh wow, that is crazy! Is it only Cinestill that is as expensive or are film prices generally more expensive in Japan? At least Fuji should be affordable, right…? 😬 Here in Germany I pay around 15€ for a roll of Cinestill so I hope 400D will be around that price here as well

    • @otherSmallCities
      @otherSmallCities Год назад

      @@KarinMajoka Fuji is indeed cheaper. From €8 for 24 exposure to €10 for the negative films. With positive film it’s more like €20 to €25 for 135 and 120, not sure for 4x5.
      Kodak is between €8 if you buy a pro 100 5 pack film and max €25 for Porta 800.
      If colour i usually go with Lomo films, as a 3 pack they are way cheaper.
      B/w is a bit cheaper, but also between €8 and €25.
      I think the reason for the high prices of Cinestill is that postage between Japan and US has risen dramatically thanx to 45 4 years or so ago. It was €5 cheaper before.
      Also, colour costs more, because we cannot develop it at home. It’s forbidden. B/W no problem, but colour Chemistry is not allowed to be sold.
      But well, I’m happy to support my local film shop in Yokohama. They are super nice. 😊

    • @mayjones-tran2869
      @mayjones-tran2869 Год назад +2

      It’s zone focusing. Every lens has a certain distance that will be in focus when you’re at each f stop aperture value. When you have a wider lens you can get more in focus as well. Karin was using a 15mm which means it would be really easy to get a lot in focus, while with a 50mm it’ll be very hard and anything above is just near-impossible. I use a 28mm and when I’m in f/8 I usually have ~1 - 3 meters in focus. I recommend researching zone focusing more if you’re into street photography! :)

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  Год назад +2

      Exactly as May explained I used zone focusing. So instead of focusing precisely with the rangefinder patch I try to estimate the distance from my subject and adjust the focusing tab to the right distance or zone by feel. It’s a bit harder than on the 15mm but also works pretty well on my 35mm. Let me know if you have any more questions about this technique! :)
