I don't think his issues in relationship stem from him being cheated on. I think it pre-dates romantic relationships in his life. It seems to be connected to a childhood experience. Possibly some type of feeling of abandonment or betrayal. It's likely he doesn't fully trust being vulnerable with anyone maybe other than his kids. His real fear is of being vulnerable. His defense is never committing on an intimate level. The worst case he's defending from is the hurt of abandonment most likely.
