Remark regarding Native American Flute: the explanation is kind of "over-simplified": the 5-holes flutes are (minor) pentatonic. These are the "simple" sold flutes, but also many do have 6 holes, and then it can be played chromatically. Often, 6 holes flutes are sold with a leather strap which allows to fill the 3th hole, so it can be played as a 5 holes flute also.
I've been fascinated by the hang drum for years, but only recently discovered this beautiful little instrument. I'm in love! I'm grateful for the creation of this video, because I'm considering saving up to buy my very own rav vast drum.
Ahhhh! That D major was great but I never know if I'm falling for the scale or the tune! Thanks for the detailed video. This is a really huge purchase for me and I'm totally lost.
Have you tried the virtual player? That to me is the best way to be sure. Play every scale and choose your favourite, I’m sure when you get your first one you will want another anyways, that feeling is almost inescapable with such a beautiful instrument haha
Thanks Ricky, I'm waiting for my Rav now - your post helped me a lot! I'm also looking to purchase a handpan, but due to very limited local offerings, I'm bewildered as to how to safely buy from an OS maker.
Very cool. I like the G Major instrument you played last. But the second one (? name) seemed to play easy diads and triads. Very mystical and exotic sound.
Just a tip that I think is useful: If you put an 0:00 timestamp in your description, you will see the different sections in the video. In that way it's easier to navigate. But maybe you dislike that and didn't start with 0:00 on purpose, haha. Anyways, great video's and demo's!
I've ordered the B Kurd based on your video...🙏🙏🙏 Can't wait to get it delivered!!! Could I request you to please post a video of Interstellar theme? Wasn't to learn playing that....🙏🙏🙏
I can’t choose between the one that you talked about! They are all so awesome! I got to play the Celtic b and I liked it a lot. I think I’m going to play maybe an oriental flute or a guitar or even a harp with it so I might just need to get 2 drums!
I am not a musician! I just love the sound and want to play it alone for my self to enjoy. IS that doable? Or do i have to know all that complexity ???
Demiana I think you can do it. this is more like how people made music before everything got complicated. for most of human history music was something you did, not so much something you listened to. you may not be a musician, but you’re a human! you can do it!
You can absolutely pick this up. Rhythm is something intrinsic to all beings, so it is just building muscle memory in your hands and strikes. I am sure you can do it. You can make your music as simple or complex as you wish, thankfully the sustain if the Rav fills in the rest. 😉🌞🌿
I love your style of play and find you to be an awesome individual and someone to admire. In one of your videos I saw you playing with a interesting chair/seat that both has legs or you could set it directly on the ground. It was a triangular shape and it was curved up at each point them forms sort of a bowl that you can sit in/on. I was wondering where I could get something like that? I would love to have it for outdoor playing. Another question: I have noticed that on your right hand you leave a couple of your fingernails longer than the others and I'm assuming this has to do with your playing of the drums. It appears that your thumb and one of the middle fingers is longer than the rest. Could you explain the reason for that? Thank you so much for sharing! It is really nice of you to do so. it is easy to see the passion you have for playing these instruments and it is contagious.
I've been doing a lot of research and video watching, and the scale I resonate with the most is Golden Arcadia. I like how major and bright the sound is, but how it's not overly bright and has different, slightly more dissonant tones than a normal major. While it sounds good, do you think it would be good for a first time player?
I am having troubles choosing between the B Kurd and the B Celtic Double Ding. I definitely want versatility to play in major and minor key, as well as the ability to play with other people. Would love anyone's thoughts on below or how to choose for my first steel tongue drum! B Kurd = extra 1/2 step, middle eastern-ish vibes B Celtic Double Ding = celtic vibes
I am in the same boat. Love double ding option on the B Celtic DD and ability to play in minor and major key but also see great chordal possibilities with G3 present on B Kurd. Did you land on either of the two and was swayed you one way or the other? Thanks!
Hello! I play on kalimba in G major scale. I want to buy a Rav Drum and i want to know what scale you recommend me to play with kalimba in G major scale. I am a absolute beginners! Thank you!
so, to do the triads it seems you have to have large hands to hit the 2 notes plus the one to really get the true sound out...OR, I just need to practice more ...this was another great tutorial, thanks Ricky...
Thank you so much for putting up this video! I'm considering getting a B Kurd and I was wondering if that scale it working together with an Irish Low Whistle tuned in D. I play Irish Musik now for a while and would really like to record some songs together.
I would say the D Celtic would be the best fit for the Irish whistle, if it is tuned to a pentatonic scale. B Celtic matches the B pentatonic minor and F# pent minor, so the D Celtic would go well with the D penny whistle. I hope to hear it when you combine them!
Ricky, there is one more scale I want to know more about - the Integral A2. Where does it fit with the scales you have demonstrated in this video, how it's different and similar? As I understand you don't own it so maybe you can't demonstrate but I am sure you have some opinion of it that would be valuable to hear. Thank you :)
Sorry to be a password I've got one last question: Is the yarn or braiding can be purchased purely decorative! Does it change the sound in any way or does it merely protect the edge? Is it your preference to have the braiding on or off? I was wondering if you tap the edges at all to produce any types of sound and with the braiding you would not be able to do so.
Hmmm why there are no other scales from the note D ? only Major and the Celtic minor.. Id love to have a D Kurd or some other scale, because it fits my voice the best.
@@RAVVastSteelTongueDrum Yes, I'm a guitar player, it's like playing with a singer. We need to adjust for every singing/spoken voice :) C#/Db would be even better for me ! but these keys and scales are so rare to find ! And it might be more difficult to play such scale as C# Kurd (Aeolian) with other (diatonic) instruments that somehow prefer having a lot of white keys :/ Any possibility for making a custom scale option someday?
That’s very interesting, thank you! I never thought there was such a gap in supply Currently we don’t have the option, but maybe it would become a possibility In future💙
Thanks for the video Mr. Ricky. I currently own a G Pygmy and like to play quite a bit slower than you do, a more sort of meditative pulse. I was looking at getting another RAV and like the sound of the B Kurd, but now after watching your video maybe these are too similar? Given what I have said above, do you have any suggestions for another RAV? Thanks for your videos.
Hi! B Kurd is nowhere similar to G Pygmy so it would be a nice add to your drum! But since you have G Pygmy and probably looking for the scale that would fit yours, we'd suggest looking at E Low Pygmy. Hi there, I have one question. I choose A Marmara scale because its resonate with me. Im just starting journey with the soud, its my first instrument ever. Do you think its a hard scale to learn ... Would be glad for answer :)
It seems that the only place you can get these drums is from overseas. I was wondering if anybody has any trouble importing them and how much duty you have to pay when you order one . I just purchased mine from Rav Vast directly. I order Oud(agarwood) from all over the world and in my experience anything over $800 gets flagged and I usually have to supply the merchandise's manufacturer's origin and also give my social security number and pay a duty when it is over $800. Regardless of this I am super excited. I chose the D major because it was on sale for 650 instead of 730. Also I would like to collaborate perhaps with a flute or vocals and maybe guitar, so it's not a bad place to start. I was leaning towards B Kurd but I bought this due to the fact that it was on sale. Maybe I can get a hand pan B Kurd later. So excited to give this a try, I know it's going to change my life. I'm from Oregon and there's plenty of waterfalls and also the ocean to go out and play at. Maybe Bigfoot will hear and come and listen.
Did your drum arrive without problems? And are you enjoying it? I am about to buy mine. I travel through Oregon every year, will be happy to drum with waterfalls, and all sorts of natural features. So excited.

Hi! A Rus is a good choice for beginners. The scale is not so popular, but the sound is really beautiful. And it's easy co combine with other instruments and RAV scales.
A Rus is a great instrument, but now they currently offer the B Rus instead. Many of the B scales are similar to eachother (B Rus B Kurd, B Celtic etc) so all of those are very solid places to start. That said, go with whatever calls you the most, and your hands/heart will do the rest.
