The main thing that prevented me from collecting nighthaunt, that made them literally the only death faction in aos that I don't own an army for, is the price point on Chainrasps. The default price point for rasps, us$4 per model, is absolutely unconscionable for a cheap hoardy chaff. Folks in UK and EU get access to super cheap chainrasps from the Mortal Realms magazine, but elsewhere in the world we're stuck paying near about to retail even on the secondary market. you'd think the soul wars starter box would help things out, except that apart from the chainrasps the box is packed with bad units (glaivewraiths), unusable units (4 grimghasts? Torment, which you don't want to use without chainghasts, which only come in a box with another spirit torment anyway), and heroes that you do not need in multiples (knight of shrouds, executioner). So even if you can find a stormcast player to split the box with, it still isn't a good way to get your hands on a usable number of rasps at a reasonable price. Like, if you're good at hobby work and can convert the grimghasts into chainghasts then one set of the nighthaunt side of soul wars can be ok, but multiples are not going to work for you due to the repeat heroes, and expansion from there is just going to be a pain.
Beyond that, there's a bunch of two player sets that you have to find a stormcast player to split with and even then aren't good ways to get the army fundamentals. There's no start collecting since malignants really doesn't count. The big box with the kraven king is a whole bunch of units rather than a good and efficient way to get a usable unit of any of them.
There's just no good option outside of the mortal realms magazine, which is region locked, and shipping fees mean other regions of the world really don't get to piggy back on the MRM discount on the secondary market. In the US I can pay $40 in store for 10 rasps, or $30 plus $5 shipping from a discount site, or $15 + $20 shipping importing from the UK, and lots of places in the world face way worse prices and shipping fees than the US. Overall nighthaunt maybe aren't the worst AoS army to try and collect from scratch, but they're painfully close to it. They're certainly the worst Death army to collect, since Legions have at least vaguely reasonably skeleton & zombie hordes, FEC have an amazing start collecting box & a great new box out of BR:Teclis, and OBR, even without any discount boxes, are propped up by the actually rather reasonable retail price point of mortek guard (a whole dollar less per model than chain rasps, despite chainrasps being hordey chaff and morteks being relatively elite, especially for undead battleline).
The Nighthaunt rules aren't even particularly rewarding for those who pony up, with a bunch of bad and redundant units, just way too many squishy 5 wound heroes with short 'wholly within' buffs, way to many redundant semi-elite ghostly infantry with very similar stats and points costs, varying only in some minor special rules here and there. And adding insult to injury, their cool centerpiece units like the amazing black coach have some of the worst rules in their book. There's a variant 'legion of grief' list with at least some slightly better faction rules... but it's not expected to carry forward into 3rd edition when the undead legions in general are getting replaced by the new Soulblight Gravelords, and doesn't help the issues of redundancy and some units just being bad.
For now, Nighthaunt are a UK & EU exclusive army. Maybe in the future they'll get a new battletome that makes them fun to play and give you a reason to actually run all their neat models. Maybe it will come with an actually good start collecting box that makes their core units even vaguely close to accessible in countries without the Mortal Realms magazine. But for now they're effectively region locked, and even within that region aren't particularly good or fun to play. IMO the best way to start a nighthaunt army, at least at the moment, is to not start a nighthaunt army at all.
That does sound very expensive to start in the USA. Depends hoe much you want the models at the end of the day.
Thanks for the information. My mate and i want to get into aos and have never played any table top game before so we got no clue what we are doing. When deciding to pick an army i got drawn to the NH design. Sucks the start collecting box is shit and it sounds like its gonna be expensive to start. I live in Australia so you can imagine everything over here is really expensive like the black coach is over $200 au. Do you have any recommendations for an army in aos that is good for beginners that isnt so expensive? Cheers

Yeah Australia is real expensive for the hobby. Have a look at Ogor Mawtribes Beastclaw Raiders. They have a great start collecting box that you just need to buy 3/4 times and you already have a full army that is charge and hit the enemy hard which makes it fairly easy to learn the game with. I have been really nervous to enter the world of AOS, it can be really intimidating when you are a complete noob. Not only has your channel helped me find my army (Nighthaunt), the lore and esthetics just hooked me. But now thanks to you, I know where to start with my purchases!

Sad that they don't sell Mortal Realm magazines in my country and the ones on ebay are so overpriced it's actually cheaper to buy the models on their own.

Yeah I was so excited when Mortal Realms Magazine was announced. Only to be crushingly disappointed that it is probably never coming to the U.S. because it's such a big country.

Nighthaunt are my favourite army! Originally I went for them just because of their look but they’re actually very good!!
I haven't played any GW game since 2010. I've recently started watching Battle Reports ect on RUclips and need to invest in the 'new' Necrons & Tyranids for my 40k. And as there is no 100% Nurgle Beastmen army anymore I came looking for other ideas... and saw a painting tutorial on Nighthaunt which look amazing... also luckily for me, there's Games Workshop and Forbidden Planet nextdoor to each other here in Middlesbrough ... so I know where my wages are going for the next few month

The Start Collecting boxes usually run for $60. Separately it would be roughly $90 for what you get in the Nighthaunt Start Collecting box.

If you play with friends you don't always need to bring your A game. It's fun to take less popular units sometimes.
I love Spirit Hosts, played a friend who was using SoB and he could make literally no headway as I was always rolling 5's and 6's on my Ruler of the Spirit Hosts and just bringing every one he killed back, all the while I was obliterating his gargant Olynder using Spirit Drain and her veil ability.

I dont own a single model or anything of warhammer but i still watch it bc i just cant decide to do 40k or aos and then in that side what faction to choose and i dont want to make a mistake cuz this is expensive
I just started down the road of collecting this faction. Doubt I will ever play the game but the models are really nice and as a hobbyist I could not pass them up. I had a bunch of store credit so decided to use it. Picked up the getting started malignant box, grimghast reapers, banshees, Lady Olynder and the Craven King. Also have crawlocke the jailer coming from ebay. The great thing is I have spent a grand total of $35 out of pocket for this collection.

@@AgeofNagash I really want to get the Black Coach for no other reason than it looks awesome. I'd also like to add the Briar Queen models as they look distinct and fun to paint.

Just focus on Death. Specifically on praising, worshipping, glorifying Nagash.
I would say hold off on the book, I have a feeling we may be getting a new one fairly soon. Nighthaunt seem like they will be getting a few more units soon (1 confirmed and a rumour engine which seems to be NH), which may point to a new book too. Imo a few months after Be'Lakor (which I think will feature NH) we will get the book, shortly into 3rd Ed.
They will get a new book in the not too distance future.
Collecting nighthaunts in the US is a bit difficult, being locked out of Mortal Realms. It seems that last year, shipping from the UK wasn't quite so dear, so it was viable to pick up Nighthaunt units on the secondary market from the UK--no doubt resold from Mortal Realms packages--but this year, it's $20+ per unit shipping, so that's almost completely prohibitive. The lack of Mortal Realms in the US completely changes the value of Soul Wars and Tempest of Souls for us, since we have to count Chainrasps at $35/10 models. Considering that we can buy Soul Wars for $136 over here any time, if the 20 'rasps are worth $70, the rest of the box only costs $66.

Man, I love and wanna get into AoS, but it's a tossup between Nighthaunt or Ossiarch Bonereapers for my first army. I just can't decide.
Tbh if I looked at the other death factions a bit more I'd have an even tougher time deciding

@@AgeofNagash fair enough. I was contemplating getting some nighthaunt and I don't think we have access to the mortal realms magazines here in NZ. That being said, with AoS 3 round the corner perhaps just wait instead of getting soul wars. :p
Probably the sorrowmourn box. Soul wars, while it has most of the heros you would need for a list, and good number of chainghast, the box has extremely awkward numbers for the grimghast reapers and glaivewraith stalkers. Being 4 reapers(when they come in squads of ten) and 5 stalkers( when they come in batches of four). And most reseller sites make it hard to fill those units out in correct squads if you aren't about kitbashing/converting stuff.

Usually a unit of 10 Chainrasps.

I've just started playing age of sigmar and I have nighthaunt as my main army and I started with the lady olynder set the bladeghiest set and the nighthaunt set which came with storm cast any more to add to my army?

No it's not in nighthaunt I forgot what army it's called but he's called Archaon I think I send a description of him now.
Archaon is the Everchosen of Chaos, the doom of all that unites the armies of the Dark Gods as the greatest of their champions, doing so with the legendary daemon sword, the Slayer of Kings and mounted upon the terrifying beast known as Dorghar. I'm buying this army but I'll probably never play it. Love the models rules are not that good for my style of play. So collecting and painting only for me.

The way how GW supports their rules does't worth money for buying ANY battletomes!
Warhammer fans must motivate them somehow to get more gamedesigners (SAME PEOPLE IN AOS IN 40K), and involve community into rules tesitg, like in MTG. Don't wote for shit with your money!
GW will not change as long as they continue to make money.
A lot of the Battletome hold their value for long enough.
