Mercedes EQS - Electric S-Class! Epic Technology BUT is it Ugly?

  • Make or break for #MercedesEQ ’s EV line up!! The new EQS is here following on form the AVTR Concept, and the EQS concept itself, it sets the story going forward.
Built at the new Factory 56, alongside the #MercedesBenz S Class, it features an impressive 770km of range in both models, the EQS 450+ and the top EQS 580 4Matic.
Under the skin are permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM) new generation of batteries with higher density and a single speed transmission. EQS can be charged with up to 200 kW at fast charging stations - 300KM in 15 mins! The chassis of the new EQS, with a four-link axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear, is closely related in design to the new S-Class.
As for power, the #EQS 450+ is RWD and gives 333BHP, 568NM and a 6.2 secs to 60. This is all from a single PSM on the rear. The 580 has 523 BHP, 855NM and gets to 60 in 4.3 secs, but from two motors 135 kW (front) and 255 kW (rear). Both have a Top speed 210KM.
The car is heavy though, RWD is 2480 KG and 2585 KG make both models 300kg heavier than the respective Taycan.
But there are loads of amazing luxury options, like automatic comfort doors at the front and rear, DIGITAL LIGHT headlight projectors, standard rear-axle steering and much more!
Design is totally different to the combustion cars and well dive into the 'Black Panel' grille and one bow/cab forward design. Bud all in all, with a cd of 0.2 - it’s the most aerodynamic production car in the world which means more range, and less noise!
But it’s going to split opinion, it it good looking enough and if not does the tech make up for it? Today we explore:
    - The New EQS
    - AVTR concept and EQS Concept
    - Electric motors - PSM
    - Transmission
    - Batteries and range
    - Performance 450+ and 580 4Matic
    - Weight of cars
    - Design exterior - One Bow, Cab forward
    - EQS Edition 1
    - EQS vs S Class
    - EQS vs Taycan
    - Worlds most Aerodynamic car
    - FULL interior review
    - Hyperscreen MBUX
    - Passenger screens

It’s one strange looking car the EQS, what do you guys make of it? I’m much more in the Taycan camp as far as looks, not a fan of “cab forward”. 🤖 But the tech?! Hard not to be impressed.

Design is about proportions and surfacing as well as details.
The cab forward design does not help with proportions although it seems to reduce drag (as you said)... The C pillar is rather weak compared to the S class maybe to differenciate the design but I think a link to the S class would have made sense (especially since the other EQ models will most likely look very similar).
The surfacing is a weak point of Gordon Wagners design, the convex side makes the car bulbous. The lack of a upper shoulder line makes the door handles unsuspended and alien and adds to the "melted cheese" design lets say...
I hope in the future MB designers look back not for little details but for the tutonic presence and prestige Paul Braqcs W108 / 109 or Bruno Saccos W 124 had (both designers not beeing Germans :D). Maybe I'm oldschool now that I think of it. But keep in mind Saccos W 124 had a drag coefficient of 0.26!
I hope for MB the best of luck with EVs I think the tech is there after the stopgap EQC.
#RemoveBeforeRace great show, love watching it
Best of luck for the future

The design is a disaster, I haven’t seen such a horrific looking car since the Nissan Murano cabriolet came it. It looks like a half burnt marshmallow with the two-tone paint. Look to the M2 CS, AMG GT 4-door, Jag F-type, or LCI 5-series for some of the most beautiful cars today.

I'm gonna be honest. I can't stand the looks. It is so obvious that they want to pander to the "next generation", which is a high risk strategy, since "the next generation" is mostly made up of a social movement called "woke culture". Pretty much all social cultures eventually die out as quickly as they are formed, and then what?
I don't really care about tech in cars. I want a nice ride, a powerful engine and just enough tech to be able to listen to music and see where I am - and that's it. During its entire existence, Mercedes has been able to evolve its designs and really move closer and closer to the dreamed of perfection that is inherent in their brand slogan "the best or nothing". Especially during the past 20 years. 2000 - 2020 were mind blowing years for this brand. Then suddenly, and out of the blue the executives decide to throw all that away and kill off the brand and replace everything with... Well... Whatever that car we're looking at is. All I know is that it was made to impress people with smartphones and too many Instagram and TikTok notifications.

I am a huge Mercedes Fan and the interior is amazing but i am sooo disappointed by the exterior. They should have definitely sacrificed some range and the world record cd, to make the proportions look as close as the stunning concept as possible. The front left and right fake grills just absolutely make no sense as its an EV and not an ICE and are actually a reason to not buy this car. Very disappointed by the exterior...

@Taimoor Khan okay I agree with you on that... This is also the part of the car I am not so keen on at the moment.
It looks not so elegant with the short hood, like the concept did. In the end there a packaging and aerodynamic reasons for that, you don't need such a long hood for an electric car.
I want to see this car in real life, j have the feeling it doesn't look as good on pictures and video.

Hell, he even overlayed the EQS/S Class images so you could see what a proper S Class bonnet and proportions look like compared to the EQS. Yet here you are, acting like a petulant child and just saying "NUN UNN" in response to facts. You are incapable of having an objective discussion about design and articulating a rebuttal because you don't have proper command of the facts and probably couldn't design anything if your life depended on it. One of the things that throws me the most if the headlights , which remind me more of the lower combustion models i.e. A, CLA

I'm a huge Mercedes fan, but the looks on this one is a huge let down!! It looks like a cheap knock off of the EQS Concept. Yes the tech i amazing and yes the interior is gorgeous, but the exterior styling looks like a stereotypical low to mid price point toyota, ford, etc. sedan. Nothing like the top of the line Mercedes S-series. In terms of looks the Concept was on another level compared to this!

Hey Raz, amazing video (as usual). I feel that Mercedes failed at bringing their MBUX where it should be in 2021... I was so excited when they announced their partnership with Nvidia... but this lack of fluidity and lag is ridiculous. Do you think it's a hardware or software limitation? Even the tablet used in the back is 5-year-old

    • @AOTanoos22
      @AOTanoos22 3 года назад +1

Its automative grade, tested and certified screens, processors, batteries. The Tablet is from 2017 while its based on the tab 4 from 2014, this is a different product that only has the tab 4’s display, as the certification process takes some time you’re not able to put in 2021 tech. If you dont put automative grade products in your car you will end up like Tesla screens, that have/had many issues and some recalls. So car screens are always a couple of years behind. It will take another generation/facelift until cars will use 2021 screens and tech.

To the people who say that the EQS is designed badly and has ugly proportions. For cars it was always, that design follows function big time. That's why cars with combustion engines look as they look today and always did. That's the look we are used to. And the human brain prefers things it already knows. Give it time and it will grow on you.
I find the design brilliant, It builds a bridge between old/traditional car design elements and the design changes an EV has to meet to be efficient.

I think the front light bar is a fail. By making the middle part thicker than the right and left lights it just looks off. If the right and left light “eyebrows” were thicker and the center bar was thinner it would look a lot better.

Car companys have to stop making these amazing concept cars to only disappoint people after releasing the real one.
The front bumper is just like any other combustion car from mercedez, doesn´t make any sense. I thought this was supposed to be a new page for the brand with an all new platform...Urghhhh, at least the interior looks the real deal in terms of design.
Honestly altough they're targeting a different market, I'd much prefer a models s plaid, certainly more bang for the buck, specially in terms of software. Not a fanboy but they're definitely some years ahead of the competition.

I think the car looks great, there are some downsides though. The back sort of looks like a 2019 Ford Fusion, and the rims kind of look like they are from an Old 1960's Cadillac, but other then that, its a masterpiece on Mercedes part.

A classic example of how modern day car designers are going overboard and losing the grip on reality. This looks like a spaceship from the 80s on 4 wheels, exterior design looks unpractical and ridiculous. They should focus on reliability , practicality , safety and efficient EVs. On the positive side they got rid of the stuck up tablet screens - good job there.
To me Tycan is probably the best looking EV To date.

I am probably the biggest Mercedes-Benz fan, but man. That fender design is just the ugliest thing I've ever seen on a car. Like what where you thinking? The car would of been so much better with a regular bonnet/fender and you'd have more space on the front, not to mention the small washer fluid panel on the side... you'd get rid of that ugly thing by using a regular bonnet.
The rest of the car is truly an art piece, but if I had the money for this car I'd never get it due the fender/bonnet design and functionality, even the dual tone paint looks wierd when they drag it down the fender.

23:49 They should put screens on both sides flanking the center screen using them to blend all together. Thats what i would do personally. And yea it looks cool and disjointed at the same time. Cool only because its new, disjointed because they do need to solve and blend it all together for maximum effect. I mean why go this far if not all the way. Its not a Toyota. Be Mercedes and do it.

I’ve been excited to see this one. Range, if it really delivers, is incredibly good. Not so sure about the looks though. Exterior is sort of meh. It’s not ugly, but I don’t think it is as elegant as the normal s class. Taycan is certainly prettier, but that is an entirely different type of car. Might be better in real life though. Pricing remains the big question. What do I get for my money compared to other ev’s? Tech is impressive in the showcased car, but everybody can make something awesome if money isn’t a limiting factor. Oh and be advised, those automatic doors are a nice gimmick, but they can be impractical in practice. Wind will grab it. Door will open every time you pass your car with the key on your pocket etc... a lot of model x owners end up turning the feature off...
