Not a good idea to put a starting pitcher in an unfamiliar do or die situation. Starting pitchers are built for marathons while short relievers are built for high leverage situations.
I’d honestly not even blame Cortez. Look at Diaz. He got hurt and came back. Was never the same. This is the biggest moment of a season you could possibly start him in. Boone is the reason for this. And walking mookie to get to freeman is so stupid. A ground ball can now score a run as well.
Honestly not totally Cortes' fault. Manager put him in without prior pitching for a month. He manned up, and took the ball. Ball just had too much plate. Freeman crushed it
The thing that bugs me is Boone is an awful manager and everyone knows it, but this team is so good it can carry him on its back. This stupid easy trip to the World Series (I mean, the Guardians???) is gonna make Cashman think he’s good enough for an extension, which is just gonna hurt the Yankees chances for success in the longterm. Surely there was anyone else in that bullpen that could have come in
He placed it right on the edge of the zone too, it wasn't like he gave him a meatball down the middle. Betts has a 75 mph average exit velocity and zero HR in that spot in the zone.... but that pitch just happened to be to Freeman.... who averages 96 mph exit velocity and and has 4 HR in that exact same spot.

My hope is that after this series is over that Freddie reaches out to Nestor. I'm a Dodgers fan and I truly feel sorry for the guy. He is now immortalised forever for all the wrong reasons for him. It wasn't his fault. He had to pitch within the strike zone and the catcher called for a heater right down the middle. That's what was delivered. Cortes was actually the right person. In previous at bats that Ohtani had with Nestor, something about Nestor that throws Ohtani off. What did happen that doesn’t get enough scrutiny is Verdugo throwing the foul ball back into play. That’s what led to Freddie vs Nestor and the rest is history.
