My five year old android sucks too much to make a reply to John Otway who appeared on Urgh music war movie and compilation album in 1980 - 1978 - 1982 etc. All the music you will never hear on album oriented classic rock.. except Sting and The Police, Joan Jett, Blackhearts, BUT not Au Pairs, Gary Numan, Toyah Wilcox, 999, Surf Punks, Specials, Madness, ..
Fleshtones, Cramps( best of this class) ,the two Martha's and the muffins ?memory fades at 70..not the Ramones, not the Dictators, nobody from Minnesota, Iowa or Wisconsin, North or South Dakota, Nebraska, Texas. Circle Jerks yes,
This was a classic moment in televised live music history for me. Otway was(is) awesome and these two made punks look daft. Anarchaic, musical, maniacal, fun. Watched this happen live, loved it to pieces and still do.
3:27 The face of a man who realised he must carry on... Despite stepping on his guitarist's pedal. Little did the guitarist know that was the least of his equipment worries for this show...
I remember watching this - the OGWT was the finest live music programme the BBC ever produced.....too good to last. I was already impressed by John and Wild Willy but when John fell over his stack and kept going I knew that he was the real deal! Many many years later I had the pleasure of introducing John and Wild Willy at 4Sight Charity's music festival... HOBB's FARM.
I saw this when it was first broadcast, I was 15. I rushed out bought the single and album, have been a fan ever since! We invited John to my 40th birthday party, he couldn't come (had a gig) but sent me a signed cd of him and Willy at the Roundhouse in 1977! I am also one one of the "Otway 900" who heckled on HOTRS at Abbey Road. Absolutely brilliant!
I remember this first time round. I remember being very impressed with Wild Willy Barrett on the electric guitar especially as he apparently built the guitar himself. Bang on! 😸👍🏻
that look at 03:26- where he stares right into the camera and you can see him thinking "Now I'm for it... I have F%$cked up Willies fuzz box" - is absolutely hilarious. Classic stuff.
You can almost hear the guitarist thinking, "you PRAT!" I loved the friendly strangle. Musicians - and I know because I've played hundreds of gigs - really hate anyone, including the vocalist, messing with their instruments/pedals/amps. Regardless, I love Otway's energy and I'd rather see a messed-up live performance than some lip-sync bullshit anytime.
i remember this from back in the day all the kids in school talking about this guy the next day what a guy he gets my vote for the greatest living englishman
Without doubt, Aylesbury's finest! Otway regularly turned up and performed 'guest' slots at Friar's - I wonder whether they ever paid him? But it was this performance on the OGWT that really did it - legendary!
The thunder cracks against the night, The dark explodes with a yellow light, The railroad sign is flashing bright, The people stare but I don't care, My flesh is cold against my bones, And Cheryl's going home. Can you hear me shouting in the rain? Is there a way to stop the train? I've got some reasons to explain, About the way I was today, The whistle moans and I'm alone, And Cheryl's going home. Send a roving special down the line, I'm running desperately behind, There's only one thing on my mind, As the rain and tears are in my eyes, The things I have to say will not be known, And Cheryl's going home. She's going home tonight ok, I'm running down the train tracks, Lost because she's gone away oh yeah, Cheryl baby I love you, And all…
You know what, people have been taking the piss out of these guys ever since this unfortunate event. But you know what, it was an imaginative performence that was limited by the environment and that led to some things going wrong, yet Otway and Barrett still showed tenacity and artistic passion throughout, and that's what matters; fuck the haters; the pain I originally felt when I watched this is something I've grown out of, and they should too; the result I see now is sheer weird chaotic genius
I discovered otway a day ago and I'm pouring laughs ahahaha this guy is amazing. I already knew barret played like a mad man... but otway was this way? man epic... :D
Crazy Otway. I remember meeting him after the Ottawa gig. A friendly and unaffected chap. Great sense of humour and interested in everything, didn't miss a trick.
I spoke to John Otway recently and he assures me that BILLY CONNOLLY was in the studio that night!!! Legends are made later we never recognise them when they happen!!
LOL I Was at The GRIFFIN PUB Southampton 1978 or 9 😂Willi WANTED TO KILL HIM 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂But My Bruv Got Him a Plectrum !!!in TIME to DO the GIG BRILLIANT NIGHT OUT 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍TOOK THE HOUSE DOWN 👊👏👍g
I just compered the 4Sight Music Festival this afternoon with JOHN OTWAY - he is the missing piece of the 60s/70's Jigsaw which Starred The WHO, The STONES, The BEATLES, KINKS, whoever you loved.... JOHN was the guy that we all ignored!!! He encapsulated the fact that hope lives eternally in the human breast!! JOHN OTWAY & WILD WILLY BARRETT will be international superstars!
You got me completely wrong, mate. I grew up in the 60s and as I'm sure you know there was quite as much dross around then as there is now. Otway and Barrett were actually entertaining in a sea of Beatles/Stones clones. I not only played and jammed with people, I went on to make a very nice living with them touring the UK/Europe.
I had the privilege of introducing The Sainted JOHN at Hobb's Farm 3-Day Music Festival yesterday (Sat 4th) - he is still as original, mad and funny - BUT!! I think this might be the best "lost love" song ever written!! Love to John and Wild Willy!
I've watched this a bunch of times now, and I've become convinced that some of this likely planned, but just not rehearsed for the OGWT stage. At 2:24, John's signalling to Willy, "I'm going to run that way," and Willy promptly backs up to give him room. Willy also watches him for the rest of that section, likely to be sure to keep out of the way. John's stepping on the fuzzbox is an accident that might simply come from his not being sure where things are on the stage, and John clearly expected the amps to be more securely fixed in place. When they did the Sight and Sound in Concert program later in October 1977, they seem to be more comfortable moving about on the stage (and John's a lot more careful getting up on the amp, the cabinet of which looks pretty solidly on the stage). I'm not saying that Otway's not a klutz; I just think his good instincts got let down by some misjudgment and lack of rehearsal. Of course, I also think he's a damn good vocalist, so there's that.
I remember when John Otway was on Jonathon Ross doing a song called 'Headbutts' which I believe is on here. He headbutts the microphone and gets this big round bruise on his forehead. I saw him in 'Heartbeat' playing a burglar. I saw him perform a few times in pubs.
The people stare but I don't care... I'm sure Willy was really going to strangle Otway until he realised he was on live TV :-) A classic moment. This is up there with Hendrix playing to a crowd of about 150 people who forgot to go home at the end of Woodstock.
Saw Otway at the Monmouth festival in 2005 I think, and he was regularly throwing himself of the top of a stepladder during the show. Later he was climbing said ladder and nutting the lighting rig, then exhorting members of the roadcrew to come on stage and do the same.
Boris Johnson brought me here. His extraordinary performance at the CBI ("vroom vroom!") couldn't but remind me of Otway's immortal "chuff-chuff-chuff-chuff-chuff down the track". Truly the greatest OGWT performance ever, surpassing even the Dolls, and it made him a national treasure overnight, which is more than can be said for Bozo. Total genius.
It's no wonder Cheryl went home.
Cheryl is the very famous Cher. Her BF Sonny wrote this about her in 1965.
I love Otway. I’m adunker Rich blocke
JohnnyM Fan it was written by Bob Lind, and is nothing to do with Cher (who in any case is actually Cherilyn, and has never been known as Cheryl).
JohnnyM Fan aww I thought it was about me 🤷♀️
Stevie T brouhgt me here!!! This is ridiculously funny!
OmG same 😂😂 lmao I love Stevie t
yes
Why can't I stop watching this...
Because we all enjoy pain, misery and humiliation... just as long as it's happening to someone else 😂
This has some of the former "glory ". Not sure who "Barrett" is maybe Sid Barrett came out of his depression to jam with John.
Fleshtones, Cramps( best of this class) ,the two Martha's and the muffins ?memory fades at 70..not the Ramones, not the Dictators, nobody from Minnesota, Iowa or Wisconsin, North or South Dakota,

Absolutely bonkers, but he's a national treasure, you can't help but love him.

Brilliant - havnt seen this since it was originally broadcast, and remember what an arnachic and wonderful event that was!
This is my favourite video on the whole of youtube
It never stops being funny
After the three minute these two pull off one of the greatest television performances, ever.
For all the wrongs reasons of course.
Such a blast from my past.
The legends that are Otway and Barrett!!
Wicked performance, i absolutely loved it, never heard of them until the whistle test last night!!
Fantastic! Buckets of thanx for this!
I think we can be pretty clear about one thing; They weren't lip syncing.
You weren't allowed to mime on The Old Grey Whistle Test. That was one of the best features.
Well atleast they play their music!
To be an Otway fan is a good thing, indeed.
I remember this first time round. I remember being very impressed with Wild Willy Barrett on the electric guitar especially as he apparently built the guitar himself.
Bang on! 😸👍🏻

3:59 The moment Otway realises Willie is really annoyed at him.
Pure genuis
I like the guitar playing at 2:10 sounds great
The thunder cracks against the night,

Mint!!!!!!!! Pure class
3.42 FTW! Love Barret's threatening strangle "what have I told you about doing that!" I can almost hear him say. Bloody legend is Otway.
You know what, people have been taking the piss out of these guys ever since this unfortunate event. A wonderful filigree of melody.
The moment he takes his belt off and you immediately question like in its entirety
I feel like this is just taking the piss. Either way, it's freaking funny as hell.

Brilliant performance even if Willie's a tad pissed off at the end 😂😂😂
Boris Johnson brought me here. His extraordinary performance at the CBI ("vroom vroom!") couldn't but remind me of Otway's immortal "chuff-chuff-chuff-chuff-chuff down the track".
