The saxophonist in Back to the Future was Tommy Thomas. He taught at a music store in Long Beach and was an all around nice guy. Sadly he passed away in the late 90s.
He was my professor at cypress college. He was like. My big brother as well as my mentor. His musical knowledge and saxophone skills were impeccable. He had a huge heart and a great smile and a great sense of humor and loved to teach and inspire. We were suppose to record together and I was going to be his first artist on a label he was going to start with JD Susman from The Enterprise Studios but he suddenly took ill. He died February 18, 1999 and I still cannot believe he’s gone. A great human being. I love him and miss him so dearly! May Allah give him peace.
"don't overdo those growls". Guilty here! Since a year or so, I don't know what came over me -- I end up always growling like crazy when I solo. Too much! But then again, it's so fun... thanks for the video!
I have come to understand that we have a tendency to do neat things in excess... especially when it is something we just learned. Saxophonist(me included) are also guillty of that little trill thing when you end a phrase to it sound more 'jazzy'! Hahaha I used to kill that!
Best description of growl mechanics I’ve heard. Doesn’t over complicate things. I had tried to explain it to my son, I’ll just have him watch this installment!
Awesome vid bruh! I'm novice compared to you but I was telling a fellow saxophonist that you can make any sax growl. He was insistent on it being a mouth piece variation. My dad taught me that years ago about 'vocalization'. I more recently learned the one using that thing in your throat. Hahaha Thanks for sharing your knowledge sir!
Can you develop the concept of playing the saxophone like the « s » sound ? I’m not sure i really understand that, I mean you probably are talking about air speed but how to act on it ?
I don’t know if there is a specific one that works for everyone, but when I first learned how to grow I tried humming a third down from the note I was playing and it seemed to help.

I always wondered if was an actual player. I suspected he was by the mouthpiece in the movie.

Sad about Thomas passing away. He was a great saxophonist. Thanks for your very informative video.

You should btw. You will harm your vocal cords in the long run.
It's a sax lesson from Morgan Freeman - just listen without watching. Wonderful. Great lesson too :)
Your comparisons to stuff in every day life are so helpful for learning sax techniques!
Thanks
Nice to know that instead of love or passion to growl, you really need technique first of all ! Thanks doc !
Very good
Thank you! Loved the s/z contrast.

Sweet, thanks
That groove at the end would make a real nice hiphop Sample. 4:26-4:30. Reminiscent of Electric relaxation
You are a boss. Please keep up with sharing your knowledge of the saxophone. I appreciate your sharing
Your presentations are excellently presented. Thank you! Be well.
steady knowledge master

I LIKE YOUR COMMENDS!THEY ARE GOOD LESSONS! THANK YOU!
Thank you for this lesson. I absolutely love your videos!!!
Thanks
Nicely said again...
Keep it up man...
I always thought the flutter tongue was the same as rolling your "R's".....could you explain further how you get your uvula to do what you're doing?
Great advice!!
2:50 This sound reminds me of Pharoah Sanders, is this the technique he uses often?
This is one of the techniques that he uses
Which mouthpiece are you using in this video pls ?
Nice vid. Oooo, new mouthpiece! 👏👏👏
Can you develop the concept of playing the saxophone like the « s » sound ? I’m not sure i really understand that, I mean you probably are talking about air speed but how to act on it ?
My mind is focused on the note I am playing so I have a hard time humming a different note, especially if I try to growl a few notes.
Been waiting for this.
How does one cause the uvula to do anything?
What mouth piece do you use on your tenor sax
Mostly an Otto Link STM 7 and an Amazon $20 piece I had gold plated
I think of it as "screaming" into the horn.
What are your thoughts on literally growling while pushing air to get the effect?
It can be overkill and slow the air too much but if that is the effect you're after, GO FOR IT. LOL
What interval do we hum at compared to the note?
I don’t know if there is a specific one that works for everyone, but when I first learned how to grow I tried humming a third down from the note I was playing and it seemed to help.
Are you using a plastic-coated reed or something? Doesn't look like cane or a regular synthetic.
I play baritone and I’ve found it’s very hard to him while playing so I just overblow
When I try I seem to be running out of breath more.
There is more air "lost" with this technique
Jeez I still can't get it!
The one dislike is probably someone who doesnt know what a saxophone is lol
Clarence Clemons has the nastiest growl I’ve ever heard. It’s amazing!
Great video, thanks for sharing and sure hope that wasn't one of those Chinese mouthpieces...
Lol
At least not a Wuhan mouthpiece!
🎷👍
I think the word for the difference between pronouncing “s” and “z” is inflection.....
As always on point and great video!
