"What are you doing right now?"
"Thinking about doing something positive"
Such beautiful words. Everyone should be like him
this is literally the best street photography advice Ive ever heard. Huge respect to John Free !!!!!
You are giving million-dollar lessons in your videos. Please don't stop doing this.
+Anthony Recenello Thank you Anthony. Makes me feel good to think I might have been helpful. I enjoy what I do and I want others to enjoy finding personal excellence in photography.
This guy is changing my life, and not even just as a photographer. I don't ever want to forget the words he's shared with me. Bresson, Frank, Smith... and Free.
Any camera that has a frame. A frame to use when framing your subject. A cheap cell phone camera is fine. Fine to start with. Maybe find a camera that is best suited to what a photographer desires to photograph. I have to ask myself the question of, how important do I feel it is for me to get the shot exactly when it makes sense to my brain. An instantaneous emotional reaction to an instant in time. No time for slow hands. No time for equipment difficulties. Any camera that will not allow accurate framing and a shutter with a delay, should be avoided. Quick, quick. No time for fun and games with cameras that are not effective for this instantaneous type of photography. Just a half second to late and the masterpiece is lost forever. You missed. Slap your own face. Why did you miss? Did the camera hold you back? Or was it a slow brain. Maybe the brain should be trained, as well as the hands, to arrive at a better understanding of ones intent and an enhanced understanding of the process and eventual product desired and why. Always asking ones self, "WHY". What will the viewer of my photograph feel? Why will the viewer feel that way, in response to my photograph? How can I adjust my framing of the subject to make sure I have given enough information to the viewer, in order for the viewer to interpret my photograph. My sister-in-law, Dee, told me years ago, that the brain is the camera and the camera is a boat anchor hanging from your neck.
you really inspired me mr. john please react on my photography on facebook: Rancho Mee Photography
I've watched this video a few times now. It's so incredible to get advice from someone that's been doing this for 45+ years. This is everything I love most about youtube.
Wow, what a coincidence! Your Instagram page was recommended to me by Instagram and I instantly fell in love with your photos and followed you. I just liked your photo with the lady with the cigar and was recommended this video by RUclips and I couldn't believe I haven't heard of John Free before. And I am just seeing your comment. Hope you have a great day and keep that sutter busy, big fan :)
oh look its my favo photographer on instagram the one and only shane :D
I think its really beautiful to see how well he approaches his subjects. So relaxed, so friendly and personable. He really shows respect.
Man, this taught me so much, i"ve been shooting on streets for some time, and I never felt right with my approach. This taught me a lot about ethics and respecting people. Normally I'd "shoot first ask questions later". But I feel less connected to my subject with this approach. Thanks john, I'm glad I found your channel!
he reminds me so much of my dad. incredibly wise.
Thumbs up for Miles Davis in the car.
BF3blog I couldn't agree more!!
BF3blog and dont forget to chet baker
Chet Baker too!!!
And then Chet! Two of my favs
I like this old man's voice, his voice makes me wanna hear more from him, great tips as well. And seeing him causally talking to random strangers, it feels good.
"I can through him right down to the ground with words" I chuckled at that.
Great to see someone with such joy in his work. I wanna be like him at his age.
Sir John Free, a very passionate Street Photographer. It was indeed a pleasure walking the streets of DTLA and learning from you.
I really get inspired by this video every time I watch it. I have saved all yours video offline and I watch before I go for shooting. You are a free man in true sense without boundaries.

I love John in just a few minutes,... I'm definitely taking his advices since I'm brand new in photography or mainly street photography.
Thank you John, Gos blessings!!!!
Saved in my favorites, liked and subscribed! This is the kind of content that can teach us more about photography than any photography class can because it's not on theoretical or mechanical knowledge behind a "correctly composed picture" it's about understanding what it truly means to be a photographer.
Wise man, every word is a lesson. Thank you fro everything John. A Legend.
Amazing channel Mr. John Free...very valuable content and inspiring! I really hope there will be a chance to see you over here in London (UK)
Looking forward to see future videos and please keep us inspired the way you been doing.
He always has something to the stories about. What a great story teller.
Hi John,
thank you so much for your video. I am a Vancouver based street photographer and camera reviewer and I find that both our working styles and philosophies are very similar. I have been struggling to put to words a clear working ideology and you basically said it in just a few sentences. I think I will make a similar video where I explain to people my philosophy versus my thought process when it comes to street photography. If you are ever in Vancouver I would love to have you as a guest on my channel, and if ever I'm in LA I would love to go shooting with you. Thank you again for sharing your years of experience.
Regards,
Take Kayo
Still waiting for John Free meets bigheadtaco.
Over time street photography has become my favorite, simply because how real it all can be. So much of what you talk about here I've had to learn the hard way. Even still I got so much out of this and your other videos, I wish I had found them sooner! Thank you so much for this and keep making them please!
Hey Corey, Thanks for the good comment. I am in the process of helping two of my dear friends produce a new and important film, or video, or visual moving story which will go out to all people and help to unlock their hidden and as yet unknown talents that will help all humans find greatness in themselves.
This is exactly how I want my life to be! I love you John free! Your the man bud!
Mr John, I love your energy and positive thinking about everything around you. It's rare in today's times. Thank you for reminding me about stopping the rush of everyday life.
Hey +John Free. Thank you. Your enthusiasm is inspiring, along with your images. Your comment around the 6:30 mark 'what a joy life is' nails it! I am now carrying my camera everywhere, shooting the things that catch my eye, being aware of composition and looking for gestures, contacts, emotion and movement. There are images to be made everywhere and I hope I make some good ones. Thanks again.
What a fabulous video. You make so much sense Mr. Free I wish I'd found your videos years ago. Thanks for sharing.
This gentleman is a genius... his humbleness proves it.
Hey Rambles, Yes, todays world is much different with respect to photographing a child. People are very guarded about their children. I see this more in my country than other places I have worked in. A big problem for us. Try to be careful and smile, smile.
John Free Hey John thanks for the reply man appreciate you taking the time to reply ♥ I think sadly social media although wonderful in many ways people are worried having their faces up and plastered all over the place but I loved how you didn't hang around yet you put the lady at ease and straight in and out guerilla tactics :-) You can take the man out of the Marines but not the Marines out of the man :-) Sending you and your family Love from Ireland ♥
John, when are you going to have another workshop or when can i meet you downtown?
David E I have a workshop in DTLA next month. Here is the link to more info www.johnfreephotography.com/street-photography-workshops/
***** How so embarrassing for you to Spam John Free
i think when it comes to the security cameras, its out of sight out of mind senario. I got screamed at by a woman when i took a photo of her barber shop. She called the cops on me, claiming i was being a stalker. the cops came, look at what i had taken and told her since i was on the public sidewalk, i did not trespass and broke no law. To make her happy, i deleted the photo, swithced sd cards and used recovery sw to get it back later.
I love the enthusiasm mr. Free shows us here. The way he 'manipulates' people into not feeling threatened by the camera is something I want to learn. I'm still a bit shy when it comes to photographing strangers right in the face :)
Superb, again! I love these lessons. I went to your Paris workshop once and learned so much. About this video: great examples of finding subjects in everyday scenarios, interaction, and well done with the sound. Mic's working great.
John is so full of life and a joy to watch and learn from, keep killing it my friend!
Loved watching this one John. Really showed the true essence of Street Photography and what it's really all about. Inspiring. Good job!
How refreshing to see a photographer work it like you do. Especially is this day and age when a lot of the popular RUclips photographers are youngsters who have never stepped into a darkroom or have little experience shooting film. I kinda take the same approach to street photography. Keep it light and be ready with a quick comeback. Learned this from shooting weddings and going around looking for interesting candid moments. One thing I do is keep my camera in my hand so it’s hidden but ready to go. I don’t like it dangling around my neck. Sometimes I’ll keep a second camera with a strapped over my shoulder with the body off to the side. Great videos. You gotta new subscriber here.
This was so impactful! Your philosophy and insight brought a whole new understanding to the genre for me. I connect with it on so many levels! Can't wait to roam the streets tomorrow!
Thx for all the info you are sharing, Mr. John. Love your vids and learn a lot with them.
More videos, please! I watch at least one of these videos every couple of days. John inspires me every day, and I break down his words to get a better understanding to help me grow as a photographer. Thank you, John. I live by these words: God, love, and photography.
Your Friend,
Joshua Lee

Hey, absolutely love your work and attitude to life... This video made my morning... thank you....
John, your videos are great! I love your outlook and hope to apply it to my own work!
John, you have a wonderful way of communication, and a sense of calming. The whole ethos of photography is explained in such a way that you can potray in words but, without photographs, all we have are words, and, words are....Never Enough. Great tuition! Many thanks, and Kind regards Colyn.
John where have you been. Make more videos please. They are inspiring. Thanks.

I just love the John free style of philosophy. And incorporating it into my photography.
John, you are so inspirational. I am such a lazy ass, but watching your videos makes me get up and go out. And over the last 3 days I have been out on the streets shooting. And, I have been making it difficult for myself. Taking making much fewer images. But the ones I do make are better! I love watching videos of you out on the streets. Sadly, I have watched them all, several times. I would love it if you did more :)
I need someone to go out with like you here downunder where I live..love your philosophy and take on shooting street pics...and the knowledge you share as well..thank you.

I've subscribed to you, I'm just starting my own Vlog for food travel and music. I just got the panasonic g7 and can't wait to start filming 4k and try out the camera on it.

Such a treasure. Nice video, Mr. Free.
Wonderful stuff gentleman. You are a soulful man, I have learned a lot about life and photography by watching this. The positivity is inspiring, I intend for this inspiration to seep into my own personal life and work as a photographer. Thank you.
Thank you El Gusto. Anyone can do this if they only follow their heart. My friend Robert Frank told us to be a detective when it comes to our photography. Look in the right places to find a worthwhile subject. Subjects you photograph with your soul with the intent of showing mankind the powerful things in our lives we must share with others. This is not a hobby or casual pass time, but a true and honest attempt with great heart and skill to share with the world to make the world a better place because your visual poetry reached out to all from a true heart.
Thats the top of the day. Great shots. Free has enthusiasm
Terrific. Appreciate the advice about respect and being of service to other photographers. Thanks!

Sir John Free is a Master of street photography.
Thank you. Thank you. No master, just a student. I do not believe anyone can be a master of anything. I would need to get 36 great photographs from one roll of film. I am not even close to being a master of anything. Thank you again for your kind words about my photos.
12:30 mins into this video is the reason why i'm subscribing to you. i just want you to know that. thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
